The Rising Star Thread - Congratulations Jesse Hogan!

Just shows what a Stupid award this is. Look who was nominated this week. Tom Boyd ??? WOW

Dom Sheed was very stiff.

I watched the WB game and Boyds first two goals were cheap free kicks from the umps.

Plus playing on a no name called Jordan Bourke.. who is 193cm tall and has played 3 games.. I reckon even Max King could have kicked a bag as well.

Boyd got the nomination?? Comfortably the most baffling Rising Star "performance" I've seen. Two goals from soft free kicks directly in front of goal and a third from waiting in the goal square while his teammate earned the hard ball for him (and he nearly fumbled it!) The only remotely impressive moment was a contested mark against two Lions players (the team with the worst defence in the league).

Sheed very, very stiff here. Once again this reiterates the tomfoolery going on with this award. The best players don't get the nomination, there's no consistency with who they're nominating, and it completely disregards that a good performance by a kid against great opposition is far more respectable than a kid "dominating" against the worst teams in the league.

Nibbler ( don't ask me why this nickname) will be our next rising star nomination based on his improvement from game 1 v St.Kilda to game 2 v Geelong. He will be outstanding in about 3 weeks time.

Say 'Neal-Bullen' five times really quickly.

maybe the fact this was cripp's second (playing) year might make a difference

yeah, technically it was hogan's second year too but he was out all year injured in his first

correction: bit harsh on cripps, just realised he broke his leg last year after playing 4 games

So the rising star is this Wednesday, Cripps v Hogan.

Asked the people at work and all but the Carlton supporter have said Hogan.

Hard to pick, personally I'd choose hogan but understand the love for Cripps.

On another note, who are the judges for this?

From the latest AFL Wikipedia page:-

"At the end of the season, nine AFL personalities (typically administrators and All-Australian team selectors) vote for five of the nominees, with their top selections earning five votes, their second selection earning four votes, etc. The player who receives the most votes is the winner. The current selection panel includes AFL CEO, Gillon McLachlan, AFL Football Operations Manager, Mark Evans, AFL National Talent Manager, Kevin Sheehan, and former players, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Glen Jakovich, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson, and Warren Tredrea.[4]."

Not sure if that is the list this year tho'. I suspect there is a fair amount of 'guessing' as there is no way those guys watch the nominees play regularly.

At best they will be given an info pack and vision of the top 5-10 (of the 23 nominees).

Jesse will win it

Cripps is a dime a dozen mid

Yesterday clinched it for mine. Hogan asserted himself when needed and did the extraordinary, kicked an after the siren goal. Etc.. The way Lynch and Lyon have sensibly evaluated him is a good thing too as both summarised just how well he has done in difficult circumstances, talking the best defender every week.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
