Yea right I thought Mick said they were close to finals?

Otherwise f, it might just be me but boooooring sport.

Understand the head rule but players scared to go into contest hard.

Carlton are distinctly average. Apart from their first quarter they haven't looked like it. Too many passengers and their skills aren't flash either. Can't see them making the 8.

Whole game has been average but the last quarter has been an absolute non-event. Carlton have nothing and the Tigers are very average.

I see the coverage hasn't changed. After every goal there is no replay for the next 30 seconds, we have to wait until the ump has ball in hand to sneak in a 5 second replay. Newsflash- there are no ads on Foxtel! Play a fricken replay of the goal. We don't want to watch the bloke run off the field

Carlton sure could have used Jeffy Garlett up forward tonight...

I still can't quite believe we've picked up a small forward of his calibre for basically nothing.

Just goes to show how quickly someone like Malthouse can turn on you. Garlett didn't cover himself in glory last year, but Mick wanted him gone so badly he let that blind him to his talents and we got him for basically nothing. His temper is Melbourne's gain!

Incredibly, a few years ago they had three of the best crumbling forwards in Betts, Garlett and Walker who were fantastic working in tandem. Two are gone and Walker has been injured a lot in the past year.

My prediction of Carlton finishing bottom 2 is looking good.

What did they trade for Jaksch, early days but didn't really show much at GWS either. Looks no better than Watson.

It's amazing how quickly things can turn, and that goes for both ways. I can still recall Betts and Garlett tearing teams apart on a consistent basis. Both will still do that to opposition defences, just for different teams, and thankfully we benefit from that.

This has been a snoozer for sure.

Mick's press conference should be more entertaining than the game. Edited by Emerald

I hate it when these two sides play. The best result is usually that both sides suck. I think we achieved that today.

Carlton is definitely the worse of the two. They have a terrible forward line, having let Waite and Garlett go, and their backline has always been mediocre at best. They went in missing just Walker and Kreuzer (borderline best 22 anyway), and though they did lose Thomas early, there was nothing in that game to show any spark for the season.

Better get used to it though. Carlton's on Friday night football roughly 10912 more times this year.

Exactly where I see a lot of Melbourne's improvement coming this year. With Garlett, JKH and Kent at the feet of tall, mobile key forwards in Hogan and Frost (with Dawes coming in later), I'm hoping our forward line gets a spark that's been missing for so long. Those games where we struggle to get 10 goals in 100 minutes of football are over.

Well ... at least I hope so.

The Blues are mediocre.

Looking at their list I'd be interested in luring only 5 to the Dees: Docherty, Henderson (as a CHB), Jaksch, Yarran and Menzel.

Most of the rest are Jack Dyer Good Ordinary Footballers.

The 31 year old Chris Judd is clearly their best player.

Murphy was an A Grader. in 2011. Has barely fired a shot since. Injuries have been a factor since then but at 27 turning 28 time is running out for him to get back to B Grade status, let alone A Grade status. He was hopeless tonight. Gibbs is a nice footballer. Like Murphy he has had an injury issue in the pre season and perhaps played underdone tonight but he is a B Grader at best. And like Murphy he was hopeless tonight.

The Blues are in a world of pain.

I'm backing Mick to be gone by season's end. The Carlton powers that be have consistently overrated their list for years. They sacked the Rat because they thought their side was better than the lower end of the eight only to discover that in reality he'd been getting them to play well above their level and now Mick can't repeat the success. The team is going to implode this year and the board will go looking for a new saviour.

As for the game, I loved it. A lot of people on here really rated Griffiths and he's now showing why. Deledio probably suspended for the next week or two. It's probably bad to say bu t Daisy going down early. All good things. Also I'm pretty sure I have the margin at 20, so that's fairly close.

And heading into the start of 2014 season we had Dawes, Hogan & Clark....that's football for ya...

Jones looks a really good pickup for Carlton, contests hard at the packs, much like hogan will for us.

Jones is a massive tease. He'll give the odd glimpse and make their fans think he's about to break out and start winning them matches but it won't ever happen. O couple of good things a game is about his limit.

It's funny that the thought of him in a red and blue guernsey would have all on here salivating.

I like him, he crashes packs and is mobile around the contest .i

Salivating? Over Liam Jones? You are kidding, surely. He's a decent mark but his set shots are the stuff of nightmares, and when he fades out of games, which is often, he becomes Mr Invisible.

I think we got a decent glimpse of where Carlton will be this year. They will be able to turn it on for a quarter, maybe two, but their unaccountable midfield and now even worse forward line will continue to be the death of them. Their list really is in no man's land at the moment.

And when he kicks a bag against us in round 21, I will remember your statement.

I thought it was us playing in a Carlton disguise last night. Disfunctional forward line, poor decision making and poorer disposal.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
