Ryan Crowley - banned substance

The Devil Inside

Recommended Posts

i must say i have a little more respect for Crowley, he's clearly done the wrong thing but he is at least taking it on the chin and not trying to get out of it.

Well, he did test positive, so not all that much he can say, except that it wasn't intentional. But then, that was also the case with Saad and Wade Lees.

Quite why any professional athlete would go outside/around the club medical staff is a bit beyond me.

According to ASADA certain 'specified substances' don't require provisional suspensions and in fact you can keep playing until the tribunal hearing.

It sounds like Crowley was in that situation hence the voluntary provisional suspension he's taken after the end of the season.

To be honest, let's wait and see exactly what he's taken and the performance enhancing side effects. If it's something minor like a Warnie situation then give him a few weeks off and get on with things.

A minor breach of the doping laws due to stupidity deserves a minor punishment.

Completely different to systematic doping.

Couldn't agree less!

This is another shambles by the AFL.

After ASADA provide the B sample it is up to the AFL to get on with the process.

Why after five months has nothing happened Gil?

A good question. Anyone know if the AFL has offered a reason?

I'm not excusing Crowley, but I suspect knowing which drugs and supplements are OK is a little more complicated than it sounds. Keep in kind some are permanently banned while others are only banned on match day and I think others only banned when in season. Secondly, drugs and supplements have different names and ingredients which often sound similar but are quite different.

Having said all that, and speaking generally and not about this particular case, I suspect some players take non-performance enhancing, non-recreational drugs which they know are banned because they are masking agents and take the risk that they won't get caught. Particularly if they've done it before or someone else they know has done it and got away with it.

At the risk of offending you LDC

Yes you are.

The guy is 31 and if he does not have enough brains after the last two years with the EFC to not take chances then he is the dumbest guy running around in the AFL.

On top of that right now we have no idea what he took.

After Hird and the EFC's statements over the last two years I do not believe one word until they are proven correct.

Has AFL made a comment on this or are they struck dumb again.

Gil in will not go away mate by ignoring it!

He's facing an AFL tribunal.

What would a comment from the CEO achieve?

You are probably right 'Clint' at this stage. They haven't been shown in a good light though in the time it's taken to deal with this issue.

I do think the AFL and Dill need to do a rethink on their overall drug policy though. So far it seems to be about doing deals and hiding things under the rug. It's a fair chance they dodged a bullet in the Karmichael case...

I have been on record as showing some sympathy for the Essendons players ( not the admin and the coach - they should get banned for ever) - I won't rehash that - what I also said that what happened at Essendon has changed the landscape forever. No player should ever take anything whatsoever unless they can unequivocally answer the question - is this ASADA/AFL approved.

On what I have read, Crowley gets no sympathy from me at all due to his unbelievably stupidity of taking nothing from the Essendon saga at all.

That covers it nutbean the dumbest player in the AFL in 2014.

I wonder how often he has rolled the dice before and got away with it?

No offence taken. And if it looks like I'm sympathetic to Crowley or excusing him, that's just poor drafting on my part. I agree that an experienced player should either know what he can take or, if unsure about something, that he should check with the club Doctor.

Another question is how many players are still rolling the dice and getting away with it! The odds of getting away with it are in their favour as there aren't many tests made each year.

Heard on SEN this morning the comment that he was suffering a back complaint for a fair bit of last season.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
