Open training miscommunication - another MFC unforced error

Exactly. Seems as though they interpreted 12.00pm on the training schedule to mean that the players would be on the ground at that time. My initilal impression was that the FD stuffed up, but that's not the case.

Unfortunately I doubt that any of the employees would have a degree in football administration.

Let's face it, if they'd had some merch & membership tables and enough food & coffee, it might not have mattered so much that the training was late.

And is anybody else a tad perturbed that the admin dept doesn't seem to have even a rough idea of what goes on at a training session, and the fact that there's an hour or so of prep beforehand?

Not really. The consumer relations staff shouldn't really know the details of the training program. And a member of the footy department eventually pointed them to the error.

What should happen is that as head of football admin Josh Mahoney is cc'd in to any communications and reviews them and as part of double checking a phone call from someone in consumer relations goes to him prior to any events like this (of which there wouldn't be many). He's the gate keeper between the FD and the admin.

Someone from the communications staff had a bright idea to check the training calendar and broadcast it as an event. That's good initiative. Unfortunately that person either didn't do the rest of the checking or wasn't supported by others to make sure it was all organised.

As a per the norm with anything associated with MFC, it is only a small minority of the membership/supporter base who had an issue with it, and the club has dealt with it

An example, we had a good conversation with another supporter who had a 4yr old son with him, he patiently waited, keeping his kid entertained with games etc, then was really pleased to get Nathan Jones autograph and a photo of him with his son, before training started, at no time did he get the [censored] and leave, he even stayed the course of the whole training session

The irony in this post smells so bad you can almost see it.

You take aim at the supporters who were annoyed with the day, who are in the vast majority here, and then back up your statement based on a chat with 1 person. Give me a break Saty. The club stuffed up and you know it.

$1000 to set up isn't worth it? Any excuse why they pay the players thousands of dollars per game to play like they have over the last few years?

Umm, because they're obliged to, because the players are on the payroll?

If you were trying to be funny, you weren't. If you were being serious...

Where does the quote from PJ come from? Makes things worse not better? A permit? Ooh big problem. $1000 only for set up? And that's a problem? Six memberships and some goodwill? Please

Would people who were not already going to buy a $250 membership, buy one on a whim because they saw a MFC tent at training?

I struggle to believe membership tents sell that many more memberships to people who weren't already going to get one. It's probably good for getting people on earlier (the "oh, how convenient, I've been meaning to do that" types), but I think we should be careful about overstating the value of them, especially when they come at a (admittedly small) cost.

How many marginal members would bother going to training anyway? I thought that was the domain of die-hards.

That may be true (ie questioble returns). But it certainly isn't for merch. One employee to sell both to the true believers Edited by binman

I emailed the club and they contacted me back today apologising,

The club has offered the kids that missed out yesterday a place in a guard of honour as the team runs through the banner, they also want to arrange the kids favourite player to give them a call and also offered to send a kids fun pack.

I thought that was pretty good of them.

Nasher...never assume.. Not for one moment when money's concerned. There are ppl who will on a day and then ...maybe not later. ...or not everyone. You DONT turn money away.

Dont think for a moment Footy is anything special in that regard. We all have our priorities but they can be twisted by a spontaneity of a moment. Yes a goodly % of those that couldnt buy yesterday will probably later.. Then there are all those that won't ...for any number of reasons.

At least the Club is turning a negative into a positive. Most kids would be stoked to be standing on the G as the players ran past before a game. Phone call from your favourite player would be very cool too

Good on the MFC

I do not agree. As the promo email was from the MFC membership email, I optimistically went thinking I'd buy my young child a first membership and maybe get a photo or two. Assuming it's still wanted, I'll still buy one. Would have bought merchandise too, which I think is often bought spur of the moment.

$1000 is nothing to set up a tent, and the permit just requires a bit of foresight. They would have easily made more than their outlay yesterday. Easily. Not to mention the good will generated towards young fans, which is exactly what the club needs long term.

I have the utmost respect for what PJ has already done for the MFC and I have difficulty reconciling this reply with his approach.

I would of thought he would say "We missed an opportunity, I'll fix it"

Worst part of the post - what do you want the Community Manager, the Graphic Designer and a trainee to do? Is Burgan supposed to be banging out Photoshop on one screen and setting up school visits in another while responding to tweets on an iPad and taking media calls on his phone?

Fair enough points otherwise but this is reaching way over the top to try and add to the argument.

You can never have enough goats to scape.

Eddie's on the Olympic Park trust, PJ isn't. I think that's the significant difference in this case. Considering Olympic Park has been dismantled and turned in to Collingwood's own training oval and AAMI Park has been built there's only Gosch's left as public space. Therefore I can understand the reasoning behind it being protected as public space (when not in use by the sports teams). If you start putting permanent signs all over it then it doesn't appear as public space.

Exactly correct

public space....so what

so is fed square

that type of argument can work either way

billboards on the fence don't interfere with the amenity of the public and can help defray the costs of providing public spaces

I could tell you how much it costs to hire Fed Sq for the day and it includes the advertising, and why the Club didn't bother last year

Re merchandising, the following explanation is from Peter Jackson:

"Gosch’s Paddock is managed by MOPT and is classified an open park. We need a permit to set up Merch stall. Plus the set up costs would be $1,000. Not knowing how many people would be attending, and the inadequate lead time re approval, we didn't go ahead with a stall."

This is exactly right, you need a permit to fart in a public place and it costs a minimum of $1000 each time to set up

Other posters complain that I said it was only a minority who complained, of the posts on here I would say there are only 5 posters who were actually there and complained in the topic, unless others didn't that is a minority of the posters on Demonland, others who didn;t attend and were therefore not affected just joined in

As daisycutter has said, [censored] happens, the club has listened and responded, we have all had a good discussion, hopefully lessons learnt all round

The club does not have a bottomless bucket of funds, so it takes commercial decisions, I would rather this approach than to put us in massive debt again

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
