2015 Contracts Thread

Didn't we sign him for three years at the end of last year? Furthermore, I could buy your explanation if he'd gotten a game or two here or there. He hasn't. You don't keep a player on the list, just so you can meet the cap. You go and draft someone else and give them a go. We know what Terlich offers and it's simply not good enough.

Pretty sute we signed him for 3 years after his great season in 2013 when he finished top 5 in the bnf. So he has only 1 year to go.

Terlich signed a 2 year contract near the end of last season

2019

Jones 27,

2017

Dunn 27, Hogan 20, Viney 20, Lumumba 28, Kennedy-Harris20, Salem 19, Vandenberg 23,

2016

Trengove 22, Dawes 26, Grimes 25 (RFA), Watts 24 (RFA), Vince 29, Tyson* 21, Kent 21, M Jones 27, Spencer 25 (UFA), T McDonald 22, Terlich 25, Jetta 25, Garlett 25, Stretch 18, Frost 21, Newton 22, Neal-Bullen 19, O McDonald 19

2015

Jamar 31 (UFA), Garland 26 (RFA), McKenzie 24, Howe 24, Fitzpatrick 23, Toumpas 21, Pedersen 28, Hunt 19, Cross 32, Bail 26, Riley 23, Michie 23, Harmes ® 19, King ® 19, White ® 18

* = Require confirmation...

Those underlined are player I think are the top 11 paid players; RFA is determined by players being among these 11 (obviously this will be wrong but hopefully indicative).

Ages are from the 1st April 2015 - an arbitrary date fit for a fool...

Updated for Gawn.

Still 12 PL player unsigned and 3 players on the RL that decisions have to be made on.

We don't HAVE to sign any of these players but I would keep (at the right price) Garland, Howe, Toumpas, Pedersen, Cross, and Riley.

Considering that Howe will want more than 'the right price' - I think he will be traded. Toumpas might be shopped, and Michie might be given another go should we trade those two out, and/or Cross calls it quits. Harmes might get upgraded or given a third year on the RL - his last month of footy will determine that.

I think it is hard to argue that Jamar, McKenzie, Fitzpatrick, Hunt, and Bail should be given another contract.

Current position for me is not much different to rpfc's:

Delisted: Jamar, McKenzie, Fitzpatrick, Bail, Riley, Michie

Signed: Garland, Howe, Toumpas, Pedersen, Cross, Hunt

Promoted: Harmes

Retained: King (third year rookie), White (second year rookie).

Would consider keeping Riley or Michie depending on trade outcomes, final draft position etc. 5 players is enough to turn over IMO, and may be more if Howe or Garland walk/are pushed.

I reckon Hunt has done just enough in recent weeks to move from "not shown enough" to "gets benefit of the doubt".

I agree with you Nasher but think we need some midfield depth to cover for injuries. With that scenario, we've wiped them all out.

I'd therefore retain one of Michie or Riley if we couldn't get a decent upgrade on them.

I'd also attempt to trade Toump, with fingers crossed.

Agree with most except I honestly cannot see the club wanting both Garland and Howe to stay.

I understand we're in talks with Howe presently so I'm imagining Garland will be moved on.

We've heard time and time again from Roos that there are certain players who can't seem to get over 'the past', evidenced in the way that they play and carry themselves on-field.

I maintain that our hugely dramatic and still incredibly embarrassing statistics, scorelines, skill-level, effort and willingness in patches and quarters of games this year is partially to do with having blokes like these guys. Howe is coming into some good form now but some of his efforts at the beginning of the season were pretty abysmal. Same goes with Garland.

Senior figures who float in and out of games and play with such inconsistency in their best and worst absolutely contribute to our team doing the same thing during games this year.

So my point is, whilst there will be some dead-wood moved on again, I believe one of Howe or Garland will go. And it's looking like it will be Garland.

How much longer will we be 'carrying' players like this?

We seem to have managed our contractual position with the players really well with a majority of those that we have question marks over out of contract at the end of this season.

Jamar - I would look to resign on a 1 year contract. with the change in the Sub rule coming up and restricted interchange numbers I think we will see more of 2 rucks playing next seaso and if he retires it will leave us thin on the ground unless we can see a value for money pick in the draft.

Garland - I think he migh benifit from a fresh start at a differnet club. it might be best for him and MFC.

Howe I would like to retain if possible as he is just 24 and I thnk he will develop further and be valuable in the future as a player with good depth of experience at both ends of the ground.

Pedersen - retain. He is not just a depth player but someone that can act as a very decent foil for Hogan

Fitzpatrick - Retain depending on what might be offered at the trading table. Given his season he looks to be very coachable and did a decent job when asked to.

Cross - sign him up for another season

Toumpas - I have no doubts on this kid. sign him for 2

Of the rest out of contract this season I would upgrade Harmes from the rookie list, give Hunt another 2 years to develop, Retain either MacKenzie or Bail and trade/delist whomever you do not retain. Minchie and Riley to go if there is some better value to be had at the draft/trading. King White to be re-rookied.

Terlich to be paid out if there is no future for him at the club. afterall, if he did not get a game to date this season then he is just taking a place on the list with no return.

Delist: Terlich, Fitz, Riley, Bail, Mckenzie.

Trade: Toumpas

Retired: Jamar

7 spots available

Upgrade: Harmes & Vandenburg

Ins: Prestia from Suns (trade 1st & 3rd round picks).

Kerridge from Crows (swap for Toumpas).

3 more ins from draft (... maybe use 2nd and 4th round & grab a delisted free agent)

Jamar, McKenzie, Fitzy, Riley, Michie, Bail and Hunt would all have to be pretty worried, surely. Terlich should be delisted and paid out as well.

Jamar, McKenzie, Riley, Hunt and Terlich are all easy decisions IMO. I have a gut feeling that one of Michie and Bail will stay as some sort of depth/insurance kind of thing (Bail's not great but occasionally has played a useful role, may do so again tomorrow in fact). Fitzy could too, given Jamar's going so we'll already be losing one tall, but I doubt that.

We have been caught short this year. Matt Jones and Rohan Bail have been getting games. Terlich still hasn't cracked one. I can't believe they re-signed him, particularly given his history at the Swans with Roos.

I've been a critic of Gawn and still am, but we shouldn't be looking to trade Gawn. He has all the physical attributes and talent required, we just need to get his mental side right. We do that and he'll be a real weapon. He's still young too.

I just don't rate the DE stat at all and I know I'm not alone in that one. Grimes is a really poor decision maker. VFL level, IMO. I'll give you an example of the uselessness of the DE stat and the problem with Jack Grimes. There was a moment in the St Kilda game in the centre square. Grimes hand balled straight to a Melbourne player, putting him under great duress. The player subsequently turned it over, Grimes failed to win a one-on-one when the ball spilled and the St Kilda player kicked a goal, leaving Grimes with his head in his hands. Now, his hand pass would have been noted as an efficient disposal, but it resulted in a goal.

I've never understood the love for Grimes anyway. He's a pretty good reader of the player when he doesn't have the ball, but with ball in hand, he is a liability and we already have enough of those, including our best defender in Tom McDonald.

If you don't play key position back at Melbourne and you can't kick or make good decisions, I hope you're not on the list come 2017.

The Essendon game aside, I reckon Cross has been in our top 5 players every week this season. He is still a gem. If we had two or three more of him, we'd be in a far greater position. The leadership he sets on the training track and on game day is exceptional. Not to mention: he's a beautiful overhead mark, tough at the contest, consistent, about the only Melbourne player that knows how to draw a free kick and he gets into the right positions. Okay, so he's limited by foot and his leg speed is certainly a worry, but he stays another year at least for mine.

We've all been decrying the lack of leadership at Melbourne and almost placed that as the root of our inconsistency this season and our inability to win games that we should. And then people want to delist someone like Daniel Cross? The only bloke that has been in finals and won them, still provides great leadership and is clearly up for going around again. Mind-boggling.

Didn't we sign him for three years at the end of last year? Furthermore, I could buy your explanation if he'd gotten a game or two here or there. He hasn't. You don't keep a player on the list, just so you can meet the cap. You go and draft someone else and give them a go. We know what Terlich offers and it's simply not good enough.

creating the pressure cooker on Max, has helped him push himself, & within a better environment where our players are starting to grow, he is 'finally' desperate enough to push through whatever it was, that was keeping himself back.

what a relief.

happy with his new contract now that he is showing growth.

now we need Spencil to up the ante` further.

I cannot understand all those clambering to delist Fitzy! A 200cm KPP who has developed this year at both ends and who also is capable of being a back--up ruck. I can see him becoming another Stef Martin the moment he transfers to another Club. To me there are others on our list (e.g. McKenzie, Bail) who offer far less upside. We would be silly to discard a developing tall who is insurance, for the same reason that those same Demonlanders feel we should retain Pederson on our list (and they are right)!

We'll attempt to trade Toumpas for a first rounder long before we simply delist him.

Good luck with that. I think the best you will get is a fringe player or a low pick, if Port or the Crows can be bothered giving him a second chance.

yes Fitzy will torch the club like Martin did

Really hope he isnt delisted. About to hit the age where someone of his height and talent usually blossoms

I'd be very surprised if we delisted Fitz, However, I reckon there's likely to be some interest from a few of clubs, and he will either remain at Melbourne or be traded.

I'm uncertain about Fitzy - he hasn't really come on at senior level. He's tall and athletic but doesn't appear to be overly endowed with footy smarts. Steph had shown a lot more when he left us.

Still, I'd give him another year of development but he would need to show some consistency at the top level. I'm thinking a defender is his go - despite the tunnel ball!

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
