Well, we've moved on to another open training date and what should be the first session in which the full list (less those injured or in rehab) is available so, in many respects, the pre season is really on in earnest now.

That also means we should have more people watching training, more reporting on it and everyone staying on topic please :lol:

I'm with you. But I want to see Grimes and Tmac win the kicking drills, Watts the boxing drill and tackling drills and Howe win the involved in the game for 120 minutes drill.

Watching Jack Grimes absolutely obliterated the field in that running test was inspirational to watch. 40+ crowd and all the players and staff giving him a round of applause. What this drill showed is

That's quite an effort from Grimes in any case.

T Mcdonald and N Jones mid group of runners.

Bail. Dawes. Vince, Gawn. Brayshaw. Kent. Terlich all not involved.

Does anybody else just think 'whatever' when reading about beep tests and so forth? Over the years I have noticed zero correlation between blokes who excel on the training track and players who actually do any damage on game day. Case-in-point Bail and the recently departed Nicholson. I would prefer to see the results of testing on brains, skills and guts

yep as I said early it is in April that I judge.

"There training the house down" is nice but means little come the real stuff.

I think that the two way running, and the endurance side of things is a very good test, however as you say, it's only one part of the equation. I would like to see something where we are able to test the endurance and repeat running skills of a player and incorporate decision making skills into the equation too... I agree that players like Nico and to a lesser degree Grimes were super when it came to endurance running and the like, but the question mark for me on Grimes is skills under pressure etc...

I also think you are being a bit harsh on Bail, I thought his season last year pretty solid. At least the first half of the year anyway, tapered off in the second half.

Build a beep test that has a tackle bag up one end, and a coach about to fling a ball at you with an instruction to kick or handball to a target at the other... :) Test not only the endurance of the player, but their disposal skills under fatigue and pressure.

How did Petracca go? I bet the news didnt film this one..

Had a quick peek towRds the end of training today. They started doing full end to end type drills with defensive and attacking switches between teams.

Petracca getting involved which is good to see. One thing I did note was the value of Hertier to the younger guys in the drills. Pulled Petracca over a coupe of times with some quiet words of advice (it appeared more to do with where to run/positioning). Might prove to be a strong leader for us i reckon.

Skills in the end to end very sharp and (having seen previous years preseasons) there is not the drop off to the end of the sessions that used to occur. Very early days though and with so many new players they seem to still be learning each others style of play.

Watched Petracca in the running drill and then kicking, marking as they started ball skills. He ran pretty well, clearly not yet in the shape of some of the boys but didn't drop out real early like Jamar, Garland and King. Frost also out pretty early.

Petracca seems to have magnificent hands, the ball just sticks, no fumbles. He attacks the ball hard also. He would be a very handy forward pocket; reckon we might see him play 10+ games deep forward this year and be used as a marking target.

Other things I noticed: as some have said before, Frost is huge. Viney seems in ripping shape.

Gawn and Harmes were doing a lot of ruck tap to rover vs Stafford and Miller. Plus every couple they would have to sprint to the goal square after a centre tap. Clearly a lot of repeat effort running. Gawn looking really good.

Mackenzie running fast laps, Dawsey also. Watts, Bail, Stretch, Spencer doing very little.
