Potential Trades [Warning: Reading this thread may self-destruct]

I don't think brayshaw and mccartin would be a terrible result for our club if a trade doesn't come up

Wouldn't mind it either. Potential gun forward and 200 gamer midfielder right there!

Then when they reach their peak in 8 years time someone can poach them off us in FA. Yay!

the below is from a poster on a Richmond forum.

Heard today that Melbourne would be prepared to trade a few players. The one that I thought might be interesting is 26yo Colin Garland.Garland had some injuries in 2014 that restricted him to 14 games. But, he's a good strong rebounding HB, with good disposal.Though, we already have Grimes & Batchelor, who play similar roles. The Melbourne Grimes, too, is up for trade, but I'm told his body is shot and his disposal is 'iffy' at best.

So our new backline is Dunn, McDonald, Jetta, Frost, Harry O and Malceski? I like it.

What's Tom McDonald's contract status?

He's a required player, right?

Re-signed for 2 years in September - http://www.melbournefc.com.au/video/2014-07-10/tom-mcdonald-signs-a-new-deal

We're light on for KPD depth - Dunn, Mcdonald, Georgiou, Pedersen - Would think that if Mcdonald were for trade we'd need to bring in 2 KPD (Frost + someone else).

He'll be 22 next year, he is an established KPD who has 60 games of experience, no injury concerns and can run all day. There aren't too many similar players going around in the AFL. I'd be wanting a top 10 pick and probably steak knives as well.

I've thought for a while now that Garland seems surplus in Roos' eyes.

Shame because I really like the bloke.

Also sad that some of these blokes I've grown to love will have to move on and not have many fond memories of their time at the club.

But I'll get over it if we're winning.

We're so fickle.

If we improved our output by just a couple of goals a game, then based on this years performance we will likely to be fighting for a final 8 position. The key question is where can we find this improvement.

Backs

No losses – Frawley and Nicholoson as they didn’t play a role last year, their absence won’t have a negative impact

Status Quo – Dunn, Garland, McDonald

Improvement – 1 point Jetta continued improvement

1 point Trengove stronger in the air, greater discipline, better kick than current options i.e Terlich, etc

1 point O’Brien Better player more run

3 points Malceski Better player, Better defender, greater kicking efficiency (which relieves pressure on turnarounds)

Midfield

No losses

Status Quo – N Jones, Vince

Improvement – 1 point Tyson natural progression with maturity

1 point Viney natural progression with maturity

1 point Gawn natural progression with maturity

1 point Howe structural improvement that benefits the team

-1 point Cross age will catch up

6 points Dangerfield a champion player who is that much better than the midfielder he would replace

4 points Shiel an upcoming champion player that will allow for the spread of our quality players into the forwards i.e Vince

Forwards

Lossess – -1 point for Byrnes, Clark, Blease, Frawley as Frawley played a role

Status Quo – Dawes, Bail,

Improvement - 1 point JKH natural progression with maturity, and full preseason

1 point Hogan will provide the same option Frawley, and more talented (as a forward)

1 point Salem natural progression with maturity

-1 point Pederson trailing off at the end of the year may could be an indication (maybe Fitzpatrick will overtake him)

6 points Cameron an upcoming champion player who a much better option than all our talls

Bench

No losses - probably Toumpass but he didn’t influence enough games to be considered a lost

Status Quo – McKenzie, Grimes, M Jones, Georgiou.

If Stretch makes it here it is unlikely to be at a level where it is a significant improvement on who he is replacing

Improvement – 1 point Kent natural progression with maturity

1 point Michie natural progression with maturity

1 point Rielly natural progression with maturity and a full preseason

1 point Watts for not being in the team; or improving to justify a place

As can be seen, natural improvement of the younger players and another year with Roo’s game plan should equate to about 10 point improvement, adding a star such as Dangerfield or a couple very good players could easily equate to 3 plus goal improvement; which would win us another 7 games.

Depth

Status Quo – the rest can’t see much improvement, though they are unlikely to deteriorate. We should be able to cover backs with Georgiou, Pederson, Grimes and Terlich. While Spencer/Jamar/Fitzpatrick will cover the ruck. An injury to our midfield will require shuffling that 1. weakens it, and 2. severly exposes another area of the ground. Am really frightened of the lack of options up forward perhaps Tapscott and Watts.

We need to land some big fish!!!

I now also can see we need forward/midfielder, maybe someone like Neade from Port Adeliade; or what's Morabito injury status at?

Edit: Players in italics are just a demonstration of what a potential trade may be worth to the club next season. It could be expected that we land two players that improve the team by about 4 - 8 points

I would be surprised 'Machsy', but didn't have his best year. The reasons he would be moved on are a great deal coming the other way or Roos thinks he is beyond repair after the Neeld years. The later one is possible, Garland really did put in against great odds and looked emotionally exhausted.

For me he's one of a couple that deserves success at our club.

...I also wouldn't take a post on a Richmond forum as gospel either.

Which one is the player who needs constant injections for diabetes?

Jack Fitzpatrick?

Garland would have to have some trade value based on his 2013 season, very capable defender.

Garland had surgery on his ankle at the end of January - pretty much ruined his pre-season/ start to the year. Would like to see where he fits in with a full pre-season under Roos. That said, he has always played the third tall sort of role and isn't an effective KPD. If we bring in Lumumba it's a big group (of mostly average players) fighting it out for a back flank spot and Garland probably has the most currency out of those players.

He is a restricted free agent atm (2014 was his 8th year on our list), 27 at the start of next season, 115 games (mostly losses) under his belt.

Contract is up at the end of 2015 and his spot in the team looks uncertain, there's every chance that he leaves for greener pastures under free agency at the end of next year. Would not attract a big contract and will be 28 at the start of the 2016 season, speculatively you would expect 4th band compo (pick after your 3rd round selection) which is likely to be 40-45 for us next year.

Therefore, if we can attract a trade better than pick 40, or can package him up for something decent he's very tradeable.

That's an optimistic summary. I started writing a serious response then stopped when I realised that we were getting all of Dangerfield, Shiel and Cameron. School holidays are the best.

I say we signal our intentions of taking Brayshaw with pick 2 and trade off 3 to whoever wants McCartin.

I'd expect Dogs, Carlton, North, maybe even Gold Coast will bite. A player and a pick will do. 3 for GCs two first rounders will do nicely.. Like to see us pick up De Goey and maybe Laverde

I would do pick 3 for GC two first rounders in a heartbeat! Big fan of Laverde and De Goey.

Not saying we are getting any of them, which is why I put them in italics (should have made that clearer); just demonstrating how they (or other quality players) could improve the team alongside the natural progression that will inevitably come.

It’s not all doom and gloom, particularly if we can land a couple of players. Drafting though will not add to team improvement next year, it will hopefully help further down the track, but by then I would start decreasing points for Jones, Dunn, Garland, Dawes, Vince, etc

What is scary though, is what would happen if Jones did his knee in the first round!

The club is currently working on re signing him beyond next year. That's how the principle works. Re sign who we want, shop around those not on the must keep list.

I thought the principle was "trade players not willing to re-sign a year before they become Free Agents"...

At the moment - Jones has not re-signed.

I am more worried about Garland

This could be Frawley all over again in 2015

Sorry to interrupt the flow of this thread, but I have been reading through a lot of rumour/trade threads, trying to sort out the wheat and the chaff. As far as I can tell, it looks likely (not definite, but getting warmer) that three players are heading to the Dees:

1 - Lamumba

2 - Frost

3 - Gwilt

Do these sound realistic at this stage, or nothing more than "possible"?

These three are all backmen, and Roos has said publicly that he wants to continue to build the midfield. So, are we jumping at shadows?

Where are we in terms of midfield trades: - Dangerfield, Taylor Hunt, the Greenwod rumour, other midfielders looking for a change etc...?

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
