I wrote this in the equalisation thread a few weeks ago and I want to repost it. It breaks my heart to see what is going on with our great competition. I no longer have expectations that the MFC will ever play in a GF again....... this is not right. The reason is FA. It simply does not allow teams like Melbourne any opportunity to climb the ladder. Every year since FA came in we have lost a top 5 player. This year we will lose our best KP player in defence and our best KP player in attack. 2 of our top 5 (one to FA). How can any team rise when they lose there best players at the end of each season to the leading clubs. Unless urgent changes are made to FA Melbourne and other teams will die and the competition will be weaker as a result.

This is what I propose as from the Equalisation Thread:

FA is destroying our competition. Between 1996 and 2006 every team played off in a Preliminary Final, now we have a two tier comp with the smaller clubs nothing more than feeder teams for the large clubs. The AFL needs to step in quickly before its too late. The AFL needs to adopt the US NFL FA system and must urgently make the following adjustments.

Tier 1: Teams 1 - 4: Forbidden from Free Agency. These teams can only lose players not gain players. There is no compensation for lost players.

Tier 2: Teams 5 - 8: Restricted Free Agency. These teams can only gain players if they lose players. There is no other compensation.

Tier 3: Teams 9 - 12: Open Free Agency: These teams can poach FA with no restrictions, they can also lose players to FA. No draft compensation.

Tier 4: Teams 13 -16: Open Free Agency but can't lose players. All players wishing to leave must be traded. Therefore no draft compensation required.

Making these changes would reverse the flow of players. The good teams would lose players to the poor teams, the reverse to which it is today. The big teams will still have an advantage when down the ladder as naturally players will want to play for them.

I call on the AFL to urgently make these changes for the long term health of our competition. No one wants to see the same teams win every year like in the EPL. AFL is only played in Australia, destroy the competition and the sport will suffer.

I don't mind this but I have an alternative,

1 Bottom 4 side cannot lose a player to a top 4 side. If losing a player to a side between 5 and 12 they get a selection immediately before the destination clubs 1st pick (prior to trades) plus compensation of 25% of the transferred players salary for the term of the initial contract-from destination club. (To be included in salary cap)

2 Sides 8 to 12 if they lose a player to a top 4 side they get a selection immediately before the destination club plus compensation of 25% of the transferred players salary for the term of the initial contract from destination club. (To be included in salary cap)

3 Top 8 side can lose a player to any club No compensation.

4 You can only get one more player in a season than you lose.

I agree with what your saying GNF but I think we are all missing the point somewhat. As Melbourne supporters of course we are going to be upset at the level of success other 'power' clubs are experiencing apart from us.

However, free agency is about the player, not the club. It is about letting the player choose where they want to play. And as players, they have the right to choose where they want to play.

Free agency fix.

When a player movers through free agency the recipient club must match the initial contract payments as a fee to the donor club. This is added to the salary cap. In Buddy's case that would mean an additional $10 mill in Sydney's salary cap + they would pay it to Hawthorn.

Note: this still allows players to move.

Agreed, they should have that right. The problem is not free agency, it's the lack of fortitude on the AFL's part to use the draft as an equaliser. If it was good enough to give GWS and GCS effectively free run on the draft for 2 years each, a similar but obviously shared power should be given to all clubs toward the bottom (bottom 4 I reckon). It restores their power, year on year, to stock young talent or trade for experience.

Another way for free agency is for the bottom 4 sides to be able to pick up free agents without it watering down the compo if you lose a player aswell, I bet we would be all over free agents this year but don't want to lose pick 3 as its to valuable

No they don't. They have a right to play in the AFL or not. If they choose to pursue footy as a career of course they are better off in the AFL but they can still go to the VFL or the EFL or many other competitions.

Another option is they can always play another sport or try another career altogether.

I agree with that. The players are not setting up as private businesses. You can't get a bunch of players together and proclaim yourselves the Canberra Crackpots and demand to play in the competition. That is restriction of trade and long may it continue. So maybe the AFL should have rights to impose other restrictions too. Be an interesting court case brought by the Crackpots.

Is it possible this is all a ploy. Just as we have already got used to the idea of spending pick 3 (although we dont have it yet) are we setting the Crows up to being used to the idea of a top 3 pick or better still having already mentally spent it.

When we cant get the Danger deal done we swoop in on Tex who says "yep i'd like to go to the Dees".

I just get the feeling Roos alreasdy knows precisely what we are going to get and is keeping the heat off the real deal so we dont get pipped at the post.

Josh said that we have approached Patrick and if he was keen to leave Adelaide they feel they are best positioned to make a deal happen. Not much given away but every time i listen to Mahoney i am glad he is at the club.

If Dangerfield says he wants to leave Adelaide and it takes 2 and 3 to get him in the red and the blue i do that without hesitation in my opinion on the base that he extends his contract to finish his playing days at the Dees.
