In 2005 when they picked Ellis they then took B.Dowler with there fist pick ( 6 ) which was a bust but where able to pick up Birchall pick 14 ( traded from port for Nathan Lonie????) and max bailey pick 18 ( traded from nth for Jon Hay??)

They year before draft 2004 when they took Roughy as a PP they struck gold by taking buddy with their first pick.

Haw also wasted a pick 6 in 2006 by taking Mitch Thorpe.

Just shows you gotta pick the right players and even Haw don't do it all the time and have had a few mistakes over the years but by getting a couple of stars have masked the mistakes.

Hawks got pick 1 (and pick 20 – Daniel Elstone & 36 – Sam Mitchell) that year in a trade with Fremantle for Trent Croad.

Two years later Croad absconded back to Hawthorn. Not Fremantle’s best work.

If we get a 1st Round compo pick for Frawley then we have to pick up Wright if available at that pick. Jamar is jogging towards the finish line and both Gawn and Wright will be able to play forward and ruck.

It will be our luck we rate Heeney as the best at our pick, we nominate and he goes to Sydney on the cheap. We are judged just to miss out on a first rounder for Frawley and get unders as a second round. We are then told by the AFL that other clubs have rated our list on the verge of being the greatest team of all time so we do not get a priority. In 2015 we finish bottom and Sydney Academy player Mills is clearly the top pick. We nominate and naturally we goes to Sydney on the cheap at pick 18. The AFL again reject our PP application on the basis that other clubs judge that out list is on the verge of greatness. This process repeats over and over. Eventually Nathan Jones is forced to retire aged 53 and is cranky because he believes he had a couple of seasons left despite the doctors saying they could not find his knees. The following season the Dees % falls to less than 3% due to missing their most experienced player.

Sadly the Saints have had the same fate. Reiwoldt is forced to retire even though no one can remember how old he is. Apparently dementia had set in and he could not remember which way the Saints were kicking. It was reported on AFL 360 that the coach was furious because he was the only player getting a kick and did not care if went the wrong way.

The Dees and Saints games have been moved from Fox Footy to the comedy channel and have out rated reruns of Benny Hill.

Interesting article, no talk of player development in there, just the luck of the draft lottery. I dont agree with bringing in Shifter Sheehan, the top 20 draftees are generally sorted by all the "experts" before the draft and the the clubs tend to choose pretty closely to the agreed pre-draft order. That is largely what we have done with our first rounders, picked the kids on offer at the time with a few disastrous exceptions. It is still a lottery no matter how many kids you watch play

It's unlikely that the AFL Commission will be offering a priority pick. And whilst it disgusts me that we request handouts, the fact remains that we need more talent. Should the AFL offer Melbourne a PP, I suspect it will be a pick at the completion of the first round and to be used on an established player only. However, who would want to commit to a disgrace of a club. A club unworthy of respect. A club unable to recruit, develop and protect its junior prospects.

Jack Watts is a player I would support in leaving the MFC during the trade period. Whilst only worth a 3rd rounder, I dont see any desire in this man. Never have, never will. Its a follower, devoid of any ability to go at the contest. Its in Jacks interest too. Like all players recruited at that time, Jack had no support from the club, something which can only be analyzed now.

I have heard some suggesting Jack Grimes should also be 'shopped' around for a trade. I disagree however. Whilst his skills are not up to AFL standard, the club can manage this. The best clubs give its players a role and they stick to it. Melbourne doesn't have to have every player offering superior skills. It needs a majority of these however removing Grimes would expose us further, hes one who is willing to throw himself at the contest.

Its time for the MFC to rebuild again so the draft must be used on young prospects. It does however need on field leadership from senior mature AFL players and therefor it would be a better option for the AFL to offer a late first round player. It would also be ideal if the AFL could help lure a big name, offering financial intensive (listed on the books of course). A Chris Judd to Carlton type of arrangement.

We tried this before while trying to retain Scully.

Hawthorn have some on their board who believe in the theory of not drafting kids.

As with PR,their idea is let other clubs waste time and effort in development and then trade in when the player hits maturity and best .

That way you know what your getting and what the cost is,
