Was just quized on the coaching job for Melbourne.Tried to ignore the question and change the topic straight away.

I know we shouldn't read into it but what are everyones thoughts on Lingy being possible coach after Roos.

Happy to try Ling, however coaching is not our problem. It's the leftover duds on our list from previous administrations.

Well 'BB' we need to kick off our "Get Ling" thread for the year.

If he is to be the successor given he has no coaching experience then Roos will need to commit to his 3rd year plus an extra for the handover.

Didn't want to create a new thread for this, but my old man (not to be trusted as a source lol) was saying that he'd heard Ling as the successor is a done deal and Harley will succeed PJ. The saturday night panel think there is something seriously brewing in regards to Ling and the coaching job.

He really did try to avoid it and looked uncomfortable when they putting the hard questions in.

Compared to earlier on the year when he was pretty up front and honest.

Something tells me Ling could very well be in the box seat.

I know he's being talked up a lot, but do we really want a guy who has never coached? Surely we'd be better off going for someone who has served some sort of apprenticeship with a quality side. Look what happened at the Bombers when they appointed a novice coach fresh from the media.

Im with you...guys done nada >he might be fabulous , absolutely so but we all got our knickers in a not when the last bloke turned up and now people are fawning over a ranga with no coaching !! I mean ...really ??

Ling was a limited footballer. Started as a Full forward with no tank, ended up a goal kicking, run with player and captained the most successful club in recent history.

He is also a very astute and intelligent businessman and manager.

Lingy has had to work very hard and has persisted in all facets of his life to make things work. That includes starting at a poor, battling club.

He has done a fair bit I would say. From what i know about him her has the right character for a coach. Strong, assured and a galvaniser of people. I am a fan of the bloke.

Can he coach, who knows?

I'm a fan as well. Bomber Thompson said he drove the standards when he was at Geelong. Has the right mix down to earth and relaxed communication and steely resolve. To be appointed captain of that Geelong team ahead of Ablett and numerous other stars speaks volumes. Two years under Roos and he'd be ready to go. Hope the Tom Harley thing is crap.

Carlton head hunted Pagan and Malthouse for thier "experience".

Geelong took a punt on Bomba Thompson.

Ling hasn't been out of the game long and if he does get the gig he will have an apprenticeship period under Roos.

Would be thrilled for him to land a role at our club.

I suppose you could have asked Lingy before he got drafted, if he would play senior footy, become a midfielder, captain his club, win a premiership and own half of Geelong. Would the answer be "no" to those too?

but if PJ and PR choose wisely then theres a mentorship to bring the coach -elect up to speed

The last part concerns me too - are we in a position to take a risk on someone who hasn't really been in the system as yet as opposed to someone who has AFL coaching experience?

I wonder what experienced assistant coaches out there are looking to serve an apprenticeship role under Roosy?

I wonder how much a fresh coach if he was a quick learner, with the right attributes could glean in 2 years under Roos?

Is Ling really any more of a risk than appointing a Stewart Dew or similar?

I would expect that Roos and Jackson add weight to whether they have the right character to take on the role ie thier ability and willingness to learn, manage people and cope with adversity and overcome.

You get that you get the right person, If they don't tick those boxes thier level of experience is irrelevant. For mine Ling ticks the boxes.
