Josh Bootsma gets the boot

I have given this matter a little thought. Something does not add up.

I thought the same

Then the article came out saying how he told the club he had gastro and couldn't play vs Gold Coast, and while the team was playing he left the hotel room and went to the beach with his girlfriend and was dumb enough to post pics to Twitter mid-game

So yeah i think its clear why he was sacked, kid is a moron

I have given this matter a little thought. Something does not add up. It is quite rate for a player to be summarily sacked mid season and usually when it has happened is for serious criminal allegations. And even rarer for a club like Carlton to openly crucify a player for his moral and ethical failings. My take is Bootsma's sacking was orchestrated to deflect scrutiny from yet another severely embarrassing loss and drown out the increasingly loud "sack Malthouse, sack Kernahan" sharks that are circling. Now they can chant the culture change mantra to stall for more time.

As much as I love a good conspiracy, I think a more likely explanation is that he did something highly inappropriate, which was bound to become public, and as it was at the end of a lengthy changes of other unprofessional conduct, they sacked him for it.

Well he might have that. But this is unique treatment for a miscreant Carlton player. And the timing also.

He could have felt better in the arvo and went out for a bit fresh air. Gastro can come and go pretty quickly. Agree very dumb to go on twitter though.

I was in the conspiracy theory box, but I've changed as well. I don't for one second believe they would've sacked a senior player for snapchats unless the girl was under 16, Sam Gilbert and the saints all got caught with pretty much the same thing going on. But it's certainly a very serious strike. Add in the lying about illness. Add in late to trainings. Add in missing appointments and meetings. There are enough strikes there to add up to dismissal.

What I don't understand is why Mick Malthouse was so keen to play him and play him on some of the games better forwards last year. This sounds to me like a kid who should've been in the VFL for the whole of last year and not even played senior footy until he behaved like it.

I'm pretty sure the article was a leak from Carlton for a bit of supporting evidence. But he looked well, happy and carefree. I don't know about you but the last time I had gastro even after the symptoms had cleared I wasn't keen on trips to the beach. I wanted to be in close proximity to the loo! Doubt my girlfriend would want me hovering over her taking photos either.

the sad thing with all of this, like others before him, is that if he was of some football/star quality it would have been swept under the rug and/or he would have been given more opportunities to right himself even though he has had plenty, like Buddy, and Dusty etc. which are the world's worst football secrets in terms of their private "hidden" behaviours.
But as he hasn't amounted to much of a footballer he is used to make an example of, like others before and many more ahead of him. In the AFL world, it pays to be smart and it bloody pays to be talented.

carlton tried to trade him to WA last year and no one wanted him. Lets face it the guy wasnt even that good of a player. And for those saying if murphy or judd did the same thing they wouldnt get sacked, well no they wouldnt because they wouldnt be that dumb in the first place.

Bootsma’s social media indiscretions stretch to last year and an away game on the Gold Coast.

The young defender was a late withdrawal from the Carlton team to play the Suns in Round 18 last year, citing gastro. He told officials he was too sick to even travel to the game and stayed behind at the team hotel where he was joined by his girlfriend.

While the Blues were having a convincing 43-point victory, Bootsma managed to rise from his death bed and find his way down to the beach.

This escape would have gone undetected if not for his fascination with social media. It seems he was so taken by the surrounds that he put a picture on Instagram.

Well he may been sick enough not to play but felt better later. We all have woken up crook, taken the day off work then felt better in the arvo. I believe Carlton after yet another disastrous loss felt they had to make a swift positive statement. They had some solid ammunition on this guy built up over time. Easier than sacking the coach. Curiously no Malthouse under pressure articles in the media this week. Edited by america de cali

If there wasn't a great deal of substance to the dismissal there would be a risk of alienating the playing group and the Players association would have been all over it. Even Carlton wouldn't be that stupid. Or.......

yet other "marquee" players seem to get away with a great deal of substance !

A 100% with you. The consesus with Bootsma is that he is a diquehead and no great loss to the game but he has managed to grab all the headlines from the real story that Carlton are shyte and in crisis. Arguably the best contribution he has made to the club. Edited by america de cali

Wow. That is so unbelievably stupid that it's actually alarming. As if sending a pictures of his penis to a teenage girl isn't evidence enough, but the guy must be seriously lacking in the intelligence department.

...and that's exactly why you don't come out with a stupid answer that if they did the same thing they would be sacked. McKay was asked the question, he would have been better off not answering on the grounds of it being a dumb question.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
