Umpiring focus of the week

I only caught the end of the game on ABC radio and the commentators there were quite bemused by the umpiring.

Plenty of comment and not complimentary at all.

Perhaps a copy of that should be sent to Wayne Campbell.

Salem's first HTB free kick against (very early on in the game). I would like the umpire's explanation on what the hell was going through his head. No prior opportunity, didn't dive on it, making a genuine attempt to dispose, ball locked to him. There is simply NO WAY that can be a free kick. To think it happened again later in the game, to the same player too. Meanwhile great rundown tackles from our side (and to be fair, a couple of Richmond's too) went unrewarded. It was one of the worst officiated games I've seen in recent years.

Agreed DC. No doubt it is unconscious but umpires are influenced by reputation, match situation or the player's team - ie a noisy filth crowd.

If i was at the club i'd be sending the Umpires boss video of Salem getting pinged for holding the ball, and Dawes' first tackle of the game and ask whats the difference....

I think he was pinged twice for htb. Both were ridiculous. The one that you are probably referring to was different to Dawes. Salem and no prior and couldn't dispose of it. The crows player had time, was wrapped up in a perfect tackle and dropped the ball. No free? Crazy stuff.

Especially when it involved Richmond.

I really don't understand hiring ex- AFL players as Umpire Advisors / coaches.

Sure have them with footy backgrounds but not with AFL team bias.

What annoys me more than anything is the INCONSISTENCY.

In our game on sat they had not paid either incorrect disposal/dropping the ball or holding the ball.

Then in the last qrter they ping Terlich for dropping the ball or incorrect disposal which was 25m out from the tigs goal and then ping Salem for holding the ball when he was making an attempt to get rid of it, again in the last qrter.

This drives me nuts cause the Terlich one really could have cost us the game if we dropped our heads as they were back within 4 pts.

Either pay them from the start or don't but stop paying the frees against one side in the LAST qrt u dumb dumb heads.

That would be near impossible, to have a really good understanding and background they would need to have played the game and preferably coached at least to assistant level which Campbell has.

I think they need to umpire to the rules and not try and craft the game with the umpires. What I mean by this is that some interpretations are being made to try and fix the game. It is not the job of the umpire to do this, if it is broken change the rules not bend them to suit.

Another issue I have is the changes in interpretation after half time when the advisor gets to them. They need to stick with them for the game otherwise you might as well have interchange umpire and that would be an even bigger mess. Umpires need to be consistent, with good or bad interpretation and not change during a game.

Don't know about corrupt but it was very poor. The 50 was a joke.

There was another earlier in the game where a player, I think it was Priddis was stripped of the ball and paid incorrect disposal against. It seems you can drop the thing out of your hands but if you are stripped of it....oh well, I just find the interpretation so frustrating...

What is the justification for the relatively recent rule that when a mark is taken in the square, the layer gets to kick it from straight in front? The cynic in me says 'more scoring = more ads on TV' but there must be something else?

What do you mean by recent, Sue? It has been the go that if a mark is taken in the goal square then the player gets to kick from straight ib front ever since I remember.
