Brett Kirk - Roos' successor?

Recommended Posts

Just suggested by Barrett on The Footy Show (i know, i know) that the MFC aren't talking to anyone during the season to be Roosy's successor, but will have a list of 6 names by season's end who they will ask to speak to.

Said lock Brett Kirk in as one of those names.

Take it as you will knuckleheads.

Where the f... does he pull a list of 6 names from? How could anyone be positive that at season's end, Melbourne will put together "6 names"?! There might be 7 people worth talking to, but no... it's been decided in April that at some time in September, we'll write down "6 names." Jesus christ.

Is this guy on crack? Seriously... Barrett... come on man. What an absolute plum.

Because putting a number like that on it, doesn't matter how much the club denies it, it'll be quoted and taken as gospel by the footy media in general.

And it'll give Barrett so much scope to throw up names that he can't possibly be wrong in the end.

At different times he'll name about 5, with at least one spot in reserve in case he gets completely blindsided.

He's full of shite, but you must admit he's pretty good at doing what he does.

Talks absolute crap and it gets lapped up each week, leaving the masses gagging for more...

Throughout the season we'll be told the 6 are believed to be Kirk, Ling, Goodwin, Ratten, probably Basset, Burns, Sumich, Bruce, Green and whatever other flavour-of-the-month assistant coach names pop up.

I know you're taking the pizz, but if Ratten or Sumich are short listed, I'll....I'll...vomit.

Agreed on Sumich the guy will be another Neeld, Drum, Waters, Tactically inept

I have also heard Goodwin's name mentioned a few weeks ago as a possibility, but with a view of doing a two year handover role. What weight that holds who knows but source was from someone in footy department circles (neither Bombers or Dees)

I've got Barrett on the list already.

He has just placed himself at the top of Roos list (hit list).

He better watch himself - I for one would not like to have Roos or PJ as an enemy.

Kirk is said to be doing well in his role as an assistant at Fremantle under Roosy's mate Rossy Lyon. The connections are all there.

I liked the way Kirk played the game - he was a clever footballer and off the field he comes across as clever, articulate and intelligent which means that he has some of the ingredients to do well as a modern day coach.

Ratten got a lot out of our ordinary midfield and much more out of an ordinary Carlton.

He is a much better coach than most give him credit for.

Fact of the matter is that Paul Roos has Sydney-fied Melbourne. That means that the assistant coach must have a strong Sydney connection to continue the path to the holy grail.

Kirk has been raised time and time again on these boards by smart people. You have to then wonder why Melbourne was eager to sign Stuart Dew 6 months ago? Why Kirk wasn't top of the list then? Don't be surprised if the candidate comes from within (Allison, Mathews etc..)

Amazing how the footy public rate coaches. My best picks are the ones that did bloody well with average lists. Bomber Thompson has the footy world fooled IMO. Did nothing until Wells and father-sons gave him a maturing side. He left Geelong, and they aint missing him even though the glory days are long gone. And this Essendon list aint bad. I think it has won 90% of its first 8 rounds in the past 3 years.

If the Sydneyfication of Melbourne didn't eventuate, my choice for an assistant-come-coach is Matthew Lloyd. Honest, strong-mind and is happy to walk against the "Hird".

Think you are under-estimating Bomber. Maybe Geelong are still enjoying the foundations put in place during his reign. Also Essendon seem much more lively than under Hird which plces him in a vulnerable position when he returns.

It seems to me Bomber has a personality that builds good relationships with players - Hird seems more aloof.

If things continue on a downward slide at the Swans I believe Kirk will be more likely to replace Longmuir than come to us. If the Swans cannot get their Mojo back within 12 months, they will be looking for another coach. I think Ratten may be worth another try and Bruce will have completed his apprenticeship at the Hawks.

I'm sure many Hawthorn supporters said similar things about Allan Joyce in 1988 & 1991

Have you watched Essendon between March-May over the past 3 years? This is groundhog season.

Then you top-up with Goddard, then Chapman.

Their recruiting has been pretty good; they have topped up for the window they in; they enjoy the luxury of the most expensive assistant coaches in the league (Thompson, now Craig).

According to Wilson, Lloyd and Co. Thompson was a rambling wreck in August last year. He also left Geelong deceptively when this was totally and utterly avoidable; when the coaching caper "got too much".

It is easy to be jocular when the sun is shining and your team is winning.

Couldnt think of a worse idea than this

please god no

We are trying to start a culture shift at the club, any of those soft average non -leader players that were our highest paid players at the club last decade (Bruce, Yze, Green, Robertson etc etc) should never be considered to be our coach, and i hope they aren't hired for any sort of coaching role at the MFC

We need to get out of 50 years of mediocrity, not continue to bring it back to the club

Hasn't stopped Clarkson infecting the Hawks with remnants of our culture.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
