It is really such a long long road back when a club allows itself to fall away so badly as it has done. To get continuity and momentum and leadership and professionalism back in to an organisation that has become so shite really is a mammoth task.

Then to lose all the key forwards.

MFC situation can be likened to a cycle of poverty . So hard to break. It wont matter how many good draft picks it gets - the place has been robbed of any leadership and culture to an extent that any decent kid entering the system just cant bridge the gap as they just dont have any exposure to what makes good juniors good AFL players.

I disagree.. We picked project players when we desperately needed solid kids.

Picks like Gysberts, Cook, Morton and Toumpas.

These are the last type of players we needed, we simply can't even get ball - so why the hell did we want skinny project types.

Luke Parker, Tom Rockcliff, Rory Sloane were all players I was shocked that we overlooked - we needed these players, they gave their all even in under 18's.

I agree with you that we lack leadership and have for years, I threw the remote at the TV when we overlooked the Vic Metro captian in Shuey at 17 - once again in favor is a project type player in Blease.. We've missed players with late picks that suited our needs - and apparently we burned Sloane, lucky for him I guess.

Then, after all this, we still do not learn... We go on to take Gysberts at 11 - who wasn't rated a top 20 pick by over 15 sides - and was a project player, speculative pick at best.

On performance, certainly not anywhere near 11... As baffling as the Strauss pick.

I won't get started on taking Lucas Cook..

This is why we are in the current state that we are in... Because we have drafted terribly, If I tried to draft worse - I couldn't of.

I cannot stand how development is even spoken of.. Club simply cannot develop spuds.... Spuds will always be spuds - because they were spuds to begin with.

GOOD PICKS will help turn this ship around... NO DOUBT.

He took over from Pagan in 2007 and tanked the bejeezus out of that year - to get the PP and Judd with it.

They were 4 and 7 after 11 rounds and then 4 and 18...

So perhaps a year of tanking.

who knows.

Everyone in the afl has done some dirty work.

Many clubs have tanked at some stage.

I don't think that taints him too much.

He would have been under instruction from the carlton board just as was the late Bailey under the melbourne board.

I actually think its the club boards in those situations that are at fault, and i feel sorry for those coaches who are used as the front man for the act.

I don't see Roos leaving a job unfinished, he's be brought in to create a solid foundation for a future coach to take us up the ladder and into contention. I see two years as the amount of time needed to do an apprenticeship under Roos, therefor I believe he'll be here for the 3rd year.

Truly hope this is wrong - but a good Melbourne Storm contact of mine has told me that a lot of players are calling Roos the Ghost as they just never see him around the club.

Im not opposed to that, as you said, we played some good footy when he was around, arguably our best since the stynes era.

He was good at carlton, they made a big mistake.

Ratten had plenty more to work with at Carlton as opposed to what Bails had with us or Primus had with Port etc...

If we're to promote from within then Rawlings is surely the front runner but I'm not sold on him yet. What experience does he bring? Has he ever played in or been involved with a successful side?

I was pretty disappointed not to land Dew at the end of last year but without a successor stitched up for 2014 I'm sure that Roosy will stay on for at least the third year of his contract. My dream scenario is he has a five year stint at the helm and in the last year or two he lets his successor do all the coaching while he hangs around mostly as a mentor and promoter of the club, kind of like Sheedy at the Giants in 2013.

None taken OD and I actually agree with you. If Jackson and Roos can't improve our results it's merger time for us.

I'll admit I'm one of those gullible supporters who gets sucked into every new coach's message of hope and have been beaten down every year recently but it's gotta be different this time, right? I mean.... Roos! We got Roos! The same guy that took over a three win team halfway through 02 and only finished two games out of the eight, and then won a flag three years later. The dude knows what he's doing.

I may seem overly-optimistic but trust me, there's still my inner Demon telling me he could work out as well as Malcolm Blight did at the Saints. Like I said though, I'm gullible and it's still only preseason so it's hope until proven hopeless for me.

I sure hope he doesn't do a Sheedy.

Sheedy was a bad example, I knew that as I was typing it because I cringed when I thought of his name but I just couldn't think of anyone else who plays that kind of ambassadorial role at a club.

Damian Barrett was really pushing this line with his questioning, trying to get PJ to commit to a deadline, and PJ just agreed with him as if it were ideal, but was hardly definite.

I actually heard today Albury footy club where he comes from there are rumours going around there that Kirk might be the man who takes over from Roos at the end of 2016

understand it's just a rumour i have no idea of his contract status or anything with Freo but i reckon it would be a great result, he knows what a great culture looks like, knows the game plan inside and out and i reckon he has a similar personality to Roos
