News coming out of AFL is that some stage this year they will hold serious talks about a merger/relocation.

Now I don't know the teams it involves but the usual names are being thrown up (us, north doggies)

Not sure what to think about this one

A merger can only happen if another team is introduced as the TV rights agreement requires an 18 team competition. Can't see that happening - but relocation of a team to Tasmania isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

Dont mention Tassie.....

Wouldn't Essendon be a better choice ?

They're going to be needing a coach and we've got one

Sauce for this 'news' House?

Toady, for once you pull up a decent footy related pic. Well done young man.

Its off season Moonie so footy related pics are optional.

But that one was for you LOL

Let's merge with essendon. We can call the new team, the Melbourne Demons and use a red and blue strip.

Sounds only fair.

Maybe the AFL has come to the realisation that the GWS experiment is not working, so they are going to merge them with us, relocate the team to Canberra and call us the Melbourne Avenue Demons.

A merger between the Melbourne Demons and the Western Bulldogs in which both teams' lists are combined would make for a pretty good side. Of course the obvious name for such a team would be the Melbourne.......Demons.

The jumper would look a little like this:

Of course it is legit!

Two very different topics.

Relocation - is a possibility. Tasmania perhaps, North Queensland perhaps. Darwin isn't big enough, Sydney's 2nd team has a long way to go, and Brisbane and Gold Coast are, well.... No one of course would be stupid enough to suggest a Melbourne team relocate to SA or WA. NZ is a long term proposition. NZ. So it is Tasmania (North is the most likely candidate) or North Queensland (!?!?) as the only short/medium term options. Country Victoria at a pinch I suppose, but really....

Merger, is only a possibility if you get four teams down to two, or merge two teams to one, and introduce another team (The AFL is not going to go the TV networks with one team sitting out each week, that is lost revenue). So if you introduce another team, the question become where? (See previous paragraph).

If you merge 4 teams in Melbourne down to two you risk not only loosing most of the fans of the two subordinate teams in the two mergers, but a lot of fans of the dominate teams in the merger. You can't expand a competition by destroying support in the heartland.

The question that begs to asked here is Why? What is broken? What needs to be fixed?

Posted (edited)

Or possibly the merger being considered is the establishment of a new super team, the Essendon Sharks.

Nothing about it on any major website, just this one. I suspect a troll in our midst.

Don't tell me you actually went looking ?? !!!

(Surely the fact that it's only 70 more sleeps til April 1 alerted you ?)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
