ONE of Paul Roos’ premiership players from 2005, former Swans defender/midfielder Ben Mathews, has joined Melbourne’s coaching panel.

Mathews is the second coaching appointment since Roos became coach, joining dual North Melbourne premiership player and long-time Swans and Kangaroos assistant coach Brett Allison, who came to Melbourne on Wednesday.

The 34 year-old has been a development coach with the Gold Coast Suns since 2012.

Mathews played 198 matches and kicked 45 goals for the Sydney Swans from 1997-2008.

A member of the Swans’ 2005 premiership team, Mathews came from Corowa-Rutherglen and developed in the reserves in 1996, before he made his AFL debut against the West Coast Eagles in round 16, 1997.

Mathews’ durability and reliable team play was a feature of his career. From round 16, 1999 to round five, 2006, he made 151 appearances from 154 matches.

After gaining a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in 1999, Mathews stepped up considerably in 2000, finishing sixth in Sydney’s best and fairest, and in 2001, he finished third.

Mathews, who wore No. 36 early in his career with the Swans, was handed the prized No. 4 guernsey, worn by one of the game’s greatest players, Tony Lockett, in 2001.

When Lockett, who retired at the end of the 1999 season, made a comeback in 2002, Mathews refused to hand the No. 4 jumper back to ‘Plugger’. Lockett then wore No. 46 in his three games that year.

Mathews was regarded as a courageous and consistent player, and an integral part of Roos’ time as coach in the Harbour City.

God I love you Roos.

Don't know much about this guy but I trust your judgement - I love appointing people who have experienced success.

Hell I just love poaching other clubs staff....... Drevil_million_dollars.jpg

(Gritting teeth and bracing myself for a howling down).

My eyebrows are a little raised at this. Is he going to bring in anyone who wasn't part of his time at Sydney? I'm happy with the signing but would like to see people from other backgrounds involved at the club. To be fair, neither Scott Burns or Adam Simpson were Swans men and they are being mooted as the most likely senior assistants and successors.

I heard Matthews speak at the end of last year at Metricon for a coaching course. He came across really well. Certainly knows his footy and seems to be a good communicator. Looks like he only spent the one year on the coast.

Well he's keeping Jade .

Have no problems with this. He'll only be able to announce those who aren't still kicking on with finals.

He's the guy that refused to give up his jumper number when Plugger came out of retirement? I like it.

Very well regarded at Gold Coast according to my contact.

That's good to know cause I can't remember this dude at all.

Roos is getting the old band back together!

Everyone rates this guy.

We're also into another ex Swan who's now at North.

Who Allison?

Would seem that way but both Allison and Mathews have also been at other clubs since and both seem to be well regarded in the industry.

No, somebody Moore?

So he was at Syd for 8 yrs and even though he didn't play in the seniors in his last year he was still in the leadership group. That says a lot.

Must have been injured a lot cause he only played 68 games over the 8 yrs.

Not sure if I missed it in the article but does it mention his role? Maybe development rather than line coach?

I haven't seen any mention of either Matthews' or Allisons' role. Only that they've joined the coaching panel.

It would seem to me that with the likelihood of Rawlings staying on board, we've now filled our quota of assistants.

The last piece is the senior assistant. Which I find a little bizarre, in that they will have had no input into the coaching panel they will eventually take over.

Or have I got the situation completely wrong?

Given Roos' consensus style of communication, I'd be surprised if the prospective Senior Assistant has not been discussing this with Roos as it has evolved.

The speed of the selection process implies that the delay on announcing the Senior Assistant is simply because they are still involved in the season, not because they are yet to decide...

Or the candidate for senior assistant is in the running for t he Lions or West Coast main gig. Leigh Tudor is my pick if he is available.

I believe Allison's role is Forward Coach replacing Leigh Brown. I would imagine Ben Mathews may be the midfield coach replacing Royal.

Has anyone heard whether our young group of development coaches are safe, Satterley, Nichol and Greaves.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50.
