the rising of community again.

this was fantastic I thought... & when the people want, the people will get if they want enough.

when we stopped attending games, & taking memberships, the AFL stepped up to help... they were a part of the curse.

we are getting back on track, with some awesome work being done.

when the people stand & refuse to take it, things will happen. it may take some time but things will change.

this same attitude can be used re our community as well, if we want it, & if we stand on our principles & stop giving in to ordinary entertainment, over Winning Premierships.

I get people don't want certain things in their community, but my wife is from tecoma and she thinks its stupid she left tecoma because there was no jobs and no where to work for young people except the supermarket maccas would at least provide some jobs and if people don't want it there then don't go there pretty simple.

Out of interest I imagine Maccas in tecoma might create jobs for school kids but it may also kills jobs at local pizza, fish n chips and take away places.

I live out there (about 3 minute drive) and a large percentage of "THE POEPLE" dont give two sh!ts about maccas being there or not. and to be honest either do I.

The protesters seem to all but given up on it. Each day i drive past on the way to work there is less and less resistance. I think there was 3 people there is morning....

thats the whole point, it should be up to the locals to decide, thru their local council. not thru a state government rubber stamp.

then the locals can complain to council if they don't agree.

I really did not understand this thread when I first saw it, so did a little bit of research on the web (which can be dangerous).

From a interview with one of the Protestors that was shown on TV, it appears that some residents in Tecoma don't want a MacDonald's in their Town as it will have a negative impact on local business and they claim the locals don't want them there and there has been a lack on information provide to the community by the CEO of MacDonald's and the Franchise owner about the proposed store.

IMO the protestors arguments do not make a lot of sense. Because if the vast majority of the local residents really don't support this business they simple will not use it, therefore the MacDonald;s store would be forced to close. What information does the Tecoma community need about the store that would not already be public information? As everyone already knows they sell burgess and fries for money, like hundreds of other stores already in Australia. As a franchise store it is a local business and may well have a local owner.

I don't particularly like big US based chain stores myself but that another story. IMO there does need to be a mayor debate about the types of foods that are available in Australia due to major health issues with the entire population. But this issue is more of a State or Federal problem then a local one.

It appears to me that a small group of local radicals is on a crusade to protect their own self interest. Who are the protestors and what's their real motivation about this protest? Are they lead by the local business community who are simple out to protect their own businesses or by residents who simple don't like development?

What I could tell from the alternative clip I saw is a local land owner (the franchisee) being harassed / bullied by a small group of locals while trying to lawfully develop land for a purpose it has been zoned for. In other words ,a small group of radicals is preventing a legal development from happening simple because its against their self interest.

I don't know this area and have based my views a one TV interview I saw. If there additional information I have not considered please let me know. Otherwise I do think the original clip above was well done but question the true motives behind this protest.

Wel Maccas had to go to VCAT to get permission to build because the council rejected the bid.

It's the councils job to represent their community so to answer your question. No, the people of Tecoma don't want Maccas there.

About 15 years ago a group of friends spent a weekend at Sorrento. There was no Maccas, no Hungry Jacks or KFC, no big supermarkets. The shops were as I remembered the local shopping centre when I was a kid. Fascinating milk bar with soda fountain, fruit shops with clean, shiny fruit, butcher shops etc.

I haven't been back but I hope it hasn't changed much and I hope it doesn't have a Maccas.

Not living in the area I am not sure of the State or Local Planning Laws.

But I am assume the business is allowed to operate 24 hour subject to certain conditions being complied with.

Do you have a basis for your comment about having undesirable being attracted to the area or is it just a concern?

DH live everywhere and so you can not stop them moving around. If they are looking for trouble then nothing will stop that from happening and it will only be the location of the incident that may change.

If a business has the permission, resources (both financial and human) and the customers to make it profitable to operate 24 hours, why would not do it?

To me the issue would be better addressed from a legislation stand point. For example not allow 24 hour trading at all or impose specific conditions such as extra security.

My State has moved away from having local approval for things like opening hours to a more State wide approach with the local government being ask for their comment on such matters.

Personally I seen many bias decisions made at the local level and matters of this nature should be treated in an objective manner. It should not matter who you know and how long you lived in the area.

It could also be argued that if any issues arise then the Store Staff can report the matter to the Police. It also been my experience that stores of this nature offer discounts to Police to encourage them to regularly come and keep an eye out on what's happening at the store.

I would assume the other traders don't want to or could not afford to operate their business 24 hours a day.

That would be the same as the SAT over here.

Council should have assessed the application on its merits and not made a bias unlawful decision. Councils are there to give good governance to all of the their community which would include the Land owner who wanted to develop his or her property.

If Council decision was over turned on appeal then clearly they legally made the wrong decision.

It would be interesting to know what the Council Officer recommend to the Council in their report about the development.

It always a interesting discussion about what the Community wants as it been my experience most Australian don't really care. If Council held a referendum of the issue the could say one way or the other that the Community did not support the development. I suspect that the community has a small but vocal group that does not want the development and if that is indeed the case that is not the majority of the community.

The real test will be if the majority of the community really do not want MacDonald's there, then they will not buy from the store and it will go out of business.

Personally I don't care about MacDonald's but I do about good governance and proper processes being followed by Councils.
