+ Joel Mac = Groin/Quad, Viney pulled up strangely after his final chase on the wing (with a bit of a skip, trying to avoid pressure his foot/hamstring? Physio ran out to pay him a visit but he stayed on. There was nobody on the bench for him to swap with even if there was a problem)

Just got back from the game. Unfortunately must have caught them on an off day because it was like watching Melbourne earlier in the season. Poor skills, poor decision making, poor work rate.

Of the Melbourne listed players:

Hogan - was isolated after Sellar and Davis were injured early. Seems to have a decent engine as he had to roam far and wide to get possessions. 3 goals was a good return for not his or the teams best game.

Strauss - need not bother packing his sun screen or tropical kit. Terrible decision making - would like to have seen his kicking efficiency - doubt whether it was over 20 per cent - just coughed it up time and time again - no presence for a supposed a-lister.

Rodan - looked lively until injured - should probably have played down south yesterday.

Davis - looked as though he was forging a good relationship with Hogan - presented well early then rib injury - I was standing near the interchange and he couldnt breath without pain.

Gillies - spud

Couch - quiet then injured

Tynan - still light framed - not sure if he will get a chance this year

Magner - in the game all day but suffered from the team disease of poor disposal when it counted.

Pederson - had to take over the ruck - took some good grabs but see Magner

Barry - quiet early but after quarter time lifted his intensity and work rate - is quick and could be a good kick

Sellar - head clash put him out of the game early - hard to assess

Joel Mac - spud - bad disposal bad decisions gave away stupid free kicks

Viney - fairly quiet - in and under - doesnt get much clear possession - always seems to be under pressure - will improve with a run

Tapscott - again, quiet and struggling to impose himself on the game - not likely to get a call up on that showing

Werribee's physical pressure told on a lot of the Casey players - this seemed to affect the decision making - became handball happy and, like the seniors, guys started to shirk the responsibility and handball to someone else without considering the position of the receiver who was more often than not in a worse position. That is what I mean by shirking responsibility, not physically shirking - it was a pretty physical game and all Casey players went in hard. The mental side of the game wasnt there today.

3 goals and in the best, I know Magner, Couch and a host of others are good VFL players but this kid has them covered for class and the ability to play at the highest level. I hope he doesn't become a waisted talent.

I was there for 3 quarters and tried to watch Jordie to get an idea if he is some one the club should preservere with. I got bored watching.

Slow even for the VFL.

Lost his opponent in the spread too easily.

Competes in close but does not have skills in close either

Disagree. I'm not one who hates Jordie. Just my opinion of what I saw today. In fact Casey had a strong midfield (on paper) today and they were thrashed out of the middle and all over the ground by Werribee. Jordie had little influence on the game.

His is coming back from injury and I hope he proves me wrong.

Norf must be disappointed that Majak will never make it, such a great athlete and physical specimen.

Just a shame he'll never have the skills to really dominate AFL.

If ever a game didn't go according to the script, it was this one. The Werribee Tigers were coming off a midweek Foxtel Cup defeat on the other side of the continent, a game played in driving rain, and had to front the second placed Casey Scorpions with 15 AFL listed players (and the luxury of being able to leave a couple in the Development League). Casey dominated the first seven or eight minutes of the game scoring 3.1.19 to nothing with the aid of the breeze and appeared set retake top spot on the ladder with an easy win.

Then everything went wrong for the Scorpions and fifty minutes and ten unanswered Werribee goals later, they were staring down the barrel of a damaging defeat.

Although the Tigers have been the Scorps' bogey team in recent years and Avalon Airport Oval hasn't been a happy hunting ground for them, the Scorpions had every reason to be confident with their flying start but perhaps they got ahead of themselves and forgot that you need to work hard in difficult conditions such as those that prevailed at Werribee yesterday. The home side certainly took note and dug deep to reel back two goals in the last twenty minutes of the opening term before taking complete control of the game in the second to open up a 47-point half time lead. They did it with strength, played direct football and used their knowledge of the local conditions to good advantage.

In many respects this game was similar to the round six loss at the hands of the Box Hill Hawks which also came off a week's bye and in which the damage was caused when the team lost all momentum in the second quarter and then fought grimly to prevent an all out massacre.

As coincidence would have it, Cam Pedersen was also Casey's best that day as he was against the Tigers in yesterday's clash. This time, with teammates going down like nine pins, Pedersen was forced to fill the gaps, even taking his turn in the ruck against bigger opponents. Skipper Evan Panozza also worked hard to keep his team in the game and Dom Barry produced some classy bursts but with Tom Couch injured, Danny Nicholls out and James Magner well covered most of the time, the Casey midfield was well below its best. Compounding the woes was the constant stream of injuries, all to AFL-listed players (Davis, Sellar, Rodan, Couch and later Macdonald) which left the team without interchange and bereft of the opportunity to rotate players other than on the ground itself. In the circumstances, the team did well to limit the damage to a 56-point defeat.

Notwithstanding, there needs to be a fair amount of soul searching at Casey with some tough games in the run home to the finals. They simply need to work a lot harder if they want the rest of the season to go according to the script.

HOW THE DEMONS FARED

Not particularly well.

Apart from the stats as below, there were a few injuries. Troy Davis was doing well until he copped one in the ribs in the first quarter. James Sellar was involved in a head clash and appeared concussed. David Rodan last a little under a half before hurting his hamstring. Tom Couch was also off with a hammy and it was reported late that Joel Macdonald also suffered a groin or quad injury.

Jesse Hogan's three goals were achieved without any service from downfield and at times he wandered far and wide at times to gather possessions.

This is the sort of thing Im always interested to hear, players that can play but often go under our radar. Not every player needs be AA. Just fair dinkum 100% effort
