Mike Sheahan clears up MFC Slur

I promised Demonlanders that when I next saw Mike I would front him, about his comments that " we were a pathetic and disgusting club". Today was the day.

I attended the Business of Sport luncheon and after he spoke and admitted that he was a long time MFC member and supporter, I introduced myself to him. He said he remembered me as a Board member and Team Manager of the Dees and also as a lawyer who had acted many times for Dees players.

I asked him did he regret calling the MFC "pathetic and disgusting". He denied it and said his main theme was "hopelessness" and that while you could use words such as "pathetic and disgusting" to descibe us on the field, he did not say that about the entire club. He said the headline as usual was by a sub editor and it had caused him grief over the last year or so. I re read his article and the word "hopelessness" does feature.

He said he would never describe the club as "pathetic and disgusting" and clearly meant that on our performances. He has cleared it up as far as I am concerned.

I accept that and believe we should all do that in my humble opinion.

On stage he indicated that we should not lose hope in getting Roos and he said he hopes we do. He feels he could command $1.2- $1.5 million a year but that we would get that back by February. He said Roos would help us get sponsors, members, keep players and get new ones, as well as developing the club's culture and players.

He also said that Roos was very familiar with our list and saw it as having a lot of potential, with a few holes needed to be filled.

I told Mike I would write this and he was happy about it.

The luncheon was well attended and the theme was Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket with Chappelli, Max Walker and Rodney Hogg. They were fantastic.

It was interesting the comment he made about Roos; he said they were having a drink after the show and Roos had been quiet for a while when all of a sudden he came out with the comment that Melbourne doesn't have a bad list. Interesting that he had been thinking about it.

He, Sheahan, also said that Melbourne were putting a lot of pressure on Roos to accept the job and there was implied pressure from the AFL as well.

No one can say we didn't give this our best shot.

Rodney Hogg ? He was never in WSC, was he ?

Blond, blue-eyed, aggressive and menacingly fast, Rodney Hogg announced himself with 41 wickets for World Series-depleted Australia against England in 1978-79. The way he regularly beat Geoff Boycott for pace thrilled Australia at a lean time. Injury and a rebel tour to South Africa interrupted, and cricket life was never quite so bounteous again. Nevertheless, Hogg was generally in Australia's first rank. A quirky character, he once had his wife erase the videotape of a soft dismissal while batting in a Test, saying he did not want his son to see him as a coward. Later, he fulfilled a long-held ambition to open a greengrocery.

I saw Mick today with his grand kids at the sesame street world tour show. Glad to see he had a productive day.

How dare he be a normal human and have a life outside football! Shame

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
