Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Williams was given an awesome list and Rodney eade built the list that roos took over. Both over rated for mine. John worsfold would be better for mine. We missed Ross Lyon which was a blunder.

I'm intrigued by Burns. I want an experienced coach, but his name tends to crop up a bit. Can anyone from Perth offer a little insight on him? If he's got the runs on the board under Worsfold, why have clubs consistently overlooked him? What's the word in WA? I noted I think PSD mention that Sumich stayed at WC for such a period, because he was no threat to Worsfold. Can the same be said of Burns, who's been at the club since 2009?

I rate Burns as a coach, never rated Sumich and still don't. Woosha is a great motivator but Burns and Walsh are the tactical brains at the Eagles, he will be a good pick up for a club, not sure whether you would take him as over Eade, Choco, Laidley or any of the other experienced coaches for the job at Melbourne.

He's got Hogan playing some bloody good football. That's enough to do it for me, lol!

Hogan was playing some bloody good football over in the West before he was even drafted... if you mean he's got Blease playing some bloody good football then I'd listen to you.

I think many of our players improved last year, & even further this year, individually... so IMO Misson, & the footy dept' are to blame for these improvements collectively.

but if you think welsh is the man, so be it.

The Eagles have a 30 min TV show over here in the West and today they focused on what they considered one of the Clubs greatest wins which was the the 2011 Semi Final when the Eagles beat Carlton by 3 points at Subiaco. The Eagles players described one of the toughest games they'd played and at the end of it had me thinking Brett Ratten should be carefully considered.

hes an underrated coach,.

he got Carlton back playing finals after a decade of nothing

and I dont think the list he had was that great to be honest, he did it all without a star key forward or back

They got Judd,Murphy,Gibbs and Kreuzer by "experimenting".

Theres your centre bounces taken care of.

We got their crap recruiters and physio who then turned on us like dogs.

They got our midfield coach .

They can rot in hell.

We are used as a temp job by people in this game.

I'm over it.

Kevin Sheedy not denying that he would be interested in Melbourne gig if approached.

Sheedy was also asked a few weeks ago about his plans for next year re coaching. He said without hessitation he still wanted to coach and would be returning to Melbourne.

Personally I think we (Gardner/Lyon et al) missed the boat on Sheedy in 2007. Choco's seen a bit now, including a premiership and a GF appearance 2 years after. He knows the game. Has seen the errors made at both a fully formed AFL club and a start up club under Sheedy. Now with a semi mature club that has passed us in the development stakes off and on the field.

Knows how to handle the media. Got a reasonably good mix together at Port in the early days and developed many unknown players to a level that enabled the pinching of silverware off one of the all time great teams at the end of an amazing run.

Will have the player's respect from day 1, delivers a simple message which even the slowest learners should be capable of getting. But on the other hand he plays the media game well with the us against them style.

He'll be available and he doesn't need to relocate.

I say Choco Williams all the way for 2014.

I can only hope the new board is willing to cross the river Styx and slay Hades to get this man.

P.S. I forgot to mention that my first preference is Bomber Thompson but he isn't listed. Still not sure why. Maybe I'm being unrealistic!

John Worsfold.

Ticks every box and still coaching and time for a nice change. Nothing like a move.

To answer two questions that have popped up.

1. I don't have a keep mark Neeld option as I've said future Melbourne coach, as in after Neeld.

2. I didn't include Bomber Thompson for the resons that he's publicly come out and said he has no desire to coach again and being at his old club the Bombers, can't see him wanting to leave. I know Craig also said he doesn't want to coach again, but with him already being at Melbourne I think increases his chances.

We have an interesting board meeting coming up tonight. Even if it's agreed neeld is to be sacked, I reckon they'd hold it over until after the QB game personally.

As I've said already.

The Dream: Roos

The Outsider/Left Fielder (If others decline): Northey

The Likely: Williams or Ratten

That's my expectation anyway.

Northey - left field/outsider?

You can say that again.... $15M-1.

Williams, Eade, Matthews, Sheedy or a change of heart by Roos.

Staggered people want Mark Williams over Brett Ratten.

Most likely because Williams won a premership.

Nothing against Ratten, he got Carlton to several years of finals (bar 2012), but I think what most supporters are calling for is a coach who has gotten a team to win an AFL premership, unlike Bailey and Neeld.

I thought the same thing. Experienced, has a flag to his name and could be interested in a new challenge. I would definitely give it a RHG.

Ratten got our midfield playing very well (cue the revisionists), I would value that highly, as I would Williams' premiership.

However, I remember hearing about the way Mark Williams left for Richmond last year, and it confirmed that he is not exactly a professional in this day and age.

Williams has always been a bit 'left of center', a trait people say all good coaches have.

He has been coaching at Coburg but still looking for a head coaching gig. These are my main concerns:

Williams: takes a very hard approach. I worry that this isn't the time to be taking hard line approaches with players and start drawing lines in the sand. We a coach who can relate to the players a bit more and get the whole group invested in him. Right now a few players are with MN 100% (Garland, Grimes, Jones ect), but not all the playing group - same with DB.

Ratten: never coached Carlton into the top 4. Got close in 2011 with 5th, but after his 2 year restructure from 09 to 12 their average finish was around 7 to 8.

Since 1985 we have not had a coach with previous premership success (the last was Barassi)... MN did what any coach would have had to have done, but I think now more than ever supporters want a coach with proven AFL premership success. Williams provides that, plus other factors such as remained around footy for a bit ect.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
