Whats up with this womens draft? For a second there I thought we had drafted a female. So this is like a special female AFL with two teams?

Yes it is a good initative but not when we have a forecast loss of 1.5m and sitting on the bottom of the ladder.

Are these woman being payed by the club? Does anybody know the story with this on what the intentions are for? Is it just a one off game sideshow? Are contracts involved?

We have one of the lowest supporter base in Vic, and our last 7 years suggests we are stuffed for supporters in the future. why do you think trenners and all the boys are calling all our young members to thank them for their support.

Well, I hardly think we were predicting the win/loss rate we are currently sitting on, or the $1.5mil shortfall when this initiative was established... and there is no way we could renege on it just because our circumstances have changed in the meantime.

Melbourne and the doggies have been very active in supporting Women's football, and as such have been chosen as the first two clubs to field women's teams in a one-off exhibition match to take place as a curtain-raiser to their Saturday night match in June. They held a draft which was basically taking turns to pick their squads. The nominees were the best players from the state leagues across Australia. 50 have been picked across the two sides.

Personally, I think that this is a great move by the AFL, all part of the push to establish a professional national women's league. They could very easily have given this to two clubs who are flying and have a massive supporter base, but they have backed in the teams that have been supporting the women's game all along. I plan on being there early to watch both matches.

Just watched her interview with Matt Burgan. Was impressed by her obvious passion for the game and emotional response to being selected at no 1. She seems to posses the kind of love for just playing footy with limit reward or recognition that is so lacking in our current group of players. Send her in to play for us I say!

Come on everyone, give them a fair go. The MFC has lots of female supporters, and this might add some interest for them. I'll be interested to see what the standard is. A national competition has worked for women's cricket so far.

I know winning is important, and the top priority is getting the blokes competitive, but that doesn't mean we have to forget everything else. This is a big day in football history, and I'm delighted Melbourne is involved. And there's a 50-50 chance we'll win.

All I know is that if Melbourne one day pass up a chance to have a 'Lauren Jackson' type, gifted agility, leadership, training ethic, for no better reason than them having a uterus, it'll make Barry Prendergast look smart.

It could take ten or twenty years for women's participation in AFL to develop enough to produce the first AFL-standard player, but it'll be worth it in the permanent payoff after that.

In the meantime, we can probably spare as much resources as one VFL team can access, to keep the progress going.

Edit: 'We' being the AFL in general. Melbourne can barely develop a polaroid at the moment, never mind half the population's football culture.

I heard similar things when the W-League appeared. Anyone who actually knows anything about the game understands just how good a move that was for Australian Soccer. Not only has it exposed our young developing players to professional training, aiding their development, but it has resulted far more quickly than anyone could have imagined, in a world class league in Australia. Our W-League is one of the strongest in the world, with serious international stars taking advantage of the timing to come and play down under during the northern hemisphere's off season and a massive pool of talented juniors who are being eyed off by other leagues every year. Compare that to our joke of an A-League, which can only attract semi-retired professionals from the big leagues.

Obviously, the situation with the AFL is somewhat different due to the fact that we are pretty much the only place that plays it, but the benefits and possibilities of this still bring a smile to my face. Imagine if AWFL (or whatever they come to call them) games became regular curtain-raisers for the AFL. The interest is there to field teams, and with access to professional coaching and facilities the improvement would be frightening. I have no doubt that the game would be just as rough too (again look at women's soccer, particularly a few years ago when they still had the rule about using their arms to protect their breasts from impacts), although perhaps not quite as fast.

I just can't see the bad in this.
