"ANY AFL move to give Melbourne a priority draft pick to help the Demons escape their seemingly endless on-field struggles will be strongly opposed by rival clubs.

A number of club CEOs, football managers and list managers told AFL.com.au this week Melbourne did not deserve any additional draft concessions, saying its current on-field problems were largely of its own making."

More important question. If we start to turn around our form, should we tank for one?

Honestly...

You are joking right? you do know that taking is why we are so shi# right now!

Ridiculously ill considered statement from Nick Bowen. Every established club that finds themselves in this position (on its knees and in need of draft concessions) is there from it's own making. Well run clubs don't generally bottom out... and if they do they don't dwell there.

Not quite... the players were behind it many of them,,, but the extended nature of the list management & the constant changing of coaches & styles would upset anyone...

continual changing direction & finger pointing at the parties who made sacrifices to the cause are a bigger problem,,, betrayal.

the culture, young dee has been a curse for nearly all of, 4 decades.

A culture that will not be improved by tanking. The only thing tanking will bring us closer to is a merge.

Just get our [censored] together on the field pick 1 or pick 8 no difference to me just get 5 more in through the draft who are willing to run, listen and do what is best for the team, priority pick I hope we sort ourselves out and it's not an issue

That's exactly how I feel and have been saying it for years

When people again and again talk about us 'picking the wrong blokes' I feel like I am being smothered in a honey-like substance called stupid

Or maybe they're right and we just happen to pick the dud every single time even though the whole country rates them on draft day :o

Spot on red. What you only get one crack at being a poor side?

no. It's like giving a kid $50 and telling him to spend it on something worth while, and he blows it all on lollies, which seem awesome at the start but then they eat them all in one go and are left with nothing but a tummy ache to show for it.
So then you feel sorry for them and you give them ANOTHER $50 and then...(you catch my drift).
But with that being said, if the AFL feel like giving us ANOTHER one i'd be quite happy for us to take one.
Muuahahahahahahah!

I sincerely hope we are not considered eligible for another priority pick within my lifetime.

me too

it is clear that the promise of draft picks returning us to glory has been a complete and total failure

and yeah all this losing hasn't been very enjoyable nor healthy for the survival of the club

Well, let's see how much the likes of Gysberts (currently playing VFL), Morton (currently playing WAFL) and Bennell (still injured) do under new regimes. Given what's happened to 2 out of those 3, I'd say that their new teams aren't doing any better at developing them than we did.

it could be argued that the damage is done by the time they part ways with us

They don't hand out premierships in April, and they sure as hell don't hand out priority picks then either.

But if our form continues, we won't win a game and will end the year having been outscored by over a thousand points. So yes, we would definitely need a priority pick in that case.

The analogy works better if you imagine giving the money to a farmer who buys seeds without having the water to grow them with.

"Melbourne's current on-field problems were largely of its own making."

How is that relevant? It's not for other clubs to cast judgments on the football operations of our club, nor is our poor performance any more tolerable because we have been the cause of our own suffering.

Stuff the pick, I don't want the rst of the people honking we always need bailing out, stand on our own feet!

We need to from this day on, start compiling who are the best assistant coaches and more importantly the best developers for our draft picks and hunt the bloody lot of them.

If we get a priority pick can we ban our recruiting department, and opt to pick any other club to select for us?

Alternatively can we drawer names out of the hat?

Isnt it funny how all we used to talk about was getting a priority pick, but now realise that this attitude is part of the reason we are so uncompetitive.

I say no to a priority pick.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
