Dayle Garlett wrecks opportunity to be drafted by Essendon

A LEADERSHIP group decision on Monday night and a 4am bender in Fremantle last weekend combined to dash Perth teenager Dayle Garlett's hopes of being drafted by Essendon.

Garlett trained with the Bombers last week and, while his form did not overwhelm them, they were still considering him until his weekend exploits.

The Bombers were aware Garlett's return to Perth at the weekend would be a test of his dedication.

But Garlett, whose reputation has tarnished his exceptional talent, effectively sealed his fate with his night out on the town.

Essendon's leadership group was consulted and voted against Garlett being given a place on the list.

The Bombers instead selected Gippsland Power midfielder Will Hams after a brilliant 2km time-trial performance and put delisted forward Ariel Steinberg on the rookie list.

I am not so easily fooled as the rest of you...

It is West Coast - playing the long game.

They seem to be doing nothing, they haven't done anything, but they will pull the trigger and BAM - another Darling.

Possible...

But not next season I think.

Maybe next draft, if he becomes a Tea Totaler. Or a Tommy Hafey desciple.

By the sounds of it, he's a bit immature and just not ready for the AFL system.

It's a shame, because along with Menzel they were the 2 biggest natural talents in the draft pool this year.

One comes back from knee injuries and shows resilence and professionalism and the other (Garlett)

just goes on benders and expects to be picked up.

He'll be a risk even next year, it's probably going to take this kid another couple of years to wisen up.

Not getting picked up might be the best thing for him at the moment.

Dayle who... I think this will be the last we hear of him. After 1 more year in the WAFL colts U19, he will be mixing it with the big boys. From there he will have to lift his game and have drastically improved his attitude which I doubt both will happen. I'm glad someone out there with a good if not better attitude got this guys spot in a draft.

Garlett was quite a good player for the Swan Districts senior team, and if he remains in WA will be a senior player again. Only played Colts after being dropped for (further) disciplinary reasons (reportedly around missing training). His talent is not in question. I believe Todd Viney was present for his best game for the senior team last year.

Best thing for him would be to leave WA and play senior state league footy in either VFL or SANFL. Read that he's considering moving to Victoria to play VFL. If he does, I think all clubs will be watching his progress. I hope he matures and can turn it around.

haha, going on a 4am bender when his future career is clearly already on the rocks before it's even started.

The kid doesn't want it. Forget about him and move on.

The mind boggles. Staggering that the opportunity of a lifetime beckoned and was wasted at the same time. Really sad for the guy!

They could have taken him at any stage in the draft or psd or rookie draft. No long game here, just a silly boy.

some are doing a good job of imploding themselves without any help

Me and Dayle are "in training".

It's a special method .

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
