If we recruit him, and he turns out to be as good as his namesake Peter (MFC 1980s) I'll be happy

Jonathan Giles of GWS is apparently not happy with the offers made to him by the Giants and he has told them he will look elsewhere if they cannot give him a fair deal. Adelaide and Collingwood in the mix -

Adelaide's Brenton Sanderson rates Jon Giles

Have they run out of salary cap room? How could that happen, unless they were paying someone way too much?

Giles is a good example of what can be overlooked on the list of another club. It's hard to believe he spent 4 years at Port and never got a game.

Would love to see the club get several "Giles types" over the next few months but not so much Giles specifically.

Giles averaged 14 disposals, 3 marks, 22 hit outs and a goal a game in his first full season, with absolutely no support.

He kills jamar in everything except hit outs, and is 5 years younger.

Staggering that GWS are supposedly keen on an established ruckman. Just as staggering that we signed jamar for 3 more years when you could get someone like Giles on the cheap.

Well if we want him I am sure on form Neeld would move heaven and earth to get him.

Had a stellar year, better than any of our talls and at 24 is coming into his prime.

Apparently asking $300k.

If we trade Martin, yes.

Straight swap? Perhaps Martin not quite enough so could chuck in a late draft pick or perhaps Morton. The question is do we need another ruckman. Gawn should right ot go, I rate Spencer and Fitzy can play back up role

I wouldn't be against that idea. I disagree about Gawn though; he was in and out of the side in 2011 and missed all of 2012. I think he is a fair way off from securing a spot in the 22.

Edit: Assuming that what you mean by "right to go" is 'AFL ready'.

I always thought Peter a good player, his brother Glenn was.... ahem less so! Don't you think they would be a little past it by now?

Looks set to Join the Pies. How do they do it?

If that is true HG - then you would think Dawes is definetly out the door..........

2011 was only Gawn's 2nd season after he missed most of 2010 with injury. Don't think there's to many ruckman who command a spot in the 22 in only their 2nd seasons. I thought he showed a lot in the 5 games he played last year and if he can get over his injury will be the goods for us to take over from Russian.

Reckon from 2014 onwards he'll turn the heat up on Jamar. Giles is a no for me. Jamar, Gawn, Spencer as 1st rucks. Clark, Martin, Fitzpatrick and Sellar all capable of playing 2nd ruck. No need for Giles.

Posted

How is anyone possibly rating Spencer? He's hopeless, open your eyes. I like Gawn but he's now had 2 ACLs in the last 4 years.

I'd take Giles in a flash, delist Spencer and be glad we've got Jamar and Giles for now and Gawn for the future.

That said I'd rather invest in a forward and midfielders so I wouldn't go all out on him.

Ill have whatever you're smoking.

Jamar is getting on (after playing one great year that was an outlier and easing since then), he is going to need a good backup and moreso in future.

Spencer has had maybe a half dozen OK games, nothing more. Is not a 1st rucks behind.

Gawn looked great and then did his knee, have no basis to rely on him, but here is hoping.

Clark has not been bought as a relief ruckman (coach has said it endlessly)

Martin has not shown enough yet to make me think he's a ruckman and looks set to leave anyway (so be it). He's done just OK at chopping out in the ruck but has never damaged when forward.

Fitz has not shown anything near being a 2nd ruck at AFL level, but again happy to watch him develop.

So if Giles (a tall, goal kicking, mature bodied, good tap ruckman) is possible, then yes please. Why on earth wouldnt we take the better player and delist / move on those that fall by the wayside?

Posted

Jon Giles 2012 season: 20 games averaging 14.2 disposals and 3.5 marks, plus 18 goals.

Mark Jamar 2012 season: 14 games averaging 8.3 disposals and 2.1 marks, plus 1 goal.

Stefan Martin 2012 season: 7 games averaging 13.9 disposals and 4.4 marks, plus 7 goals.

Plus Jamar is four and a half years older than Giles and three and a half years older than Martin.

I know who my preferred ruck combination would be, and it wouldn't include the virtual witches hat wearing number 40.

ok ! could you organise it. Trade for Martin?

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
