Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

FAREWELL BRENT MOLONEY

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but if no other club makes Moloney an offer has Melbourne FC made any public statements about whether or not it would offer him a new contract? Or will he just be let go and I guess end up in the draft?

I think that Moloney has left the club, so I doubt we would offer him a contract, even his manager(?) has said he's contacted 17 clubs trying to get him a contract, the 18th club being us as the one he hasn't.

I think he has screwed Moloney good and proper.

Oh kay... so some of us aren't learning our lessons here. Look at how Melbourne have sought to build our list over the last 5 years by playing for high draft picks and compare that to how the Swans have gone about it, bringing in second tier players from other clubs and turning them into quality role players. Adam Goodes is the only star on that team and an aging one at that yet they beat the star-studded Hawks in the Grand Final with a bunch of role players. It's definitely time we start rethinking how we go about putting our team together.

I think Hawthorn have a couple of stars but they are mainly good disciplined players; I don't see them as a star studded team. Just my take on it.

Yeh, I'd agree really. They have a strong culture and good disciplined players who know their roles. Which only reinforces my point that these are the sort of players we should be looking to bring in through FA and the trade.

Not looking for future superstars through the draft.

Pretty sure every club that loses a player to FA is compensated with a pick, it's part of the system...

I realise we will get a compo pick, I said he isn't worth one.

Could Moloney be the "Leon Davis" of 2013?

Good chance he may have to come back to Melbourne, cap in hand, if he wants to continue playing AFL football; by putting us offside he's effectively burnt his bridges but we may have something if all else fails, who knows.

With Neeld bringing in Magner, Couch and Sellar for season 2012 - all older than 20 years with mature bodies - I reckon we can determine that he knows we need ready-made stop gap players to tide us over until our list matures. Interesting though that he was not sold on Moloney, Bate or Petterd being these stop gap players. He requires a certain attitude to accompany the bigger body and is uncompromising on this. However, I can't see us shifting 15 players during FA / trade / draft.

With the three who are already gone - Lawrence, Green, Moloney - I reckon he will shift another 6-7 at the maximum.

If Neeld continues with the mentality he has shown so far

  1. Approx 3 of the newer players will be early twenties, big bodies, and either not getting a game at their AFL club ( like Cam Pederson) or showing great form in VFL / SANFL / WAFL.
  2. 2 via FA / trade for exisiting AFL players (these two players are of vital importance to the Dees in 2013)
  3. Approx 5 in the draft - we know Viney will be one of these.

There is not a lot of pure talent available to us in FA / trade but we have to get the best aviable that suit our needs. Of course, some of the draft positions might be caught up in the trading and there can be lots of variations but we can't go too far on drafting 18 yo kids, or filling up with other team rejects. The 2 existing AFL players we try to trade for have got to be ready to play and worth our while - maybe Shannon Byrnes from Geelong and Koby Stevens from WCE or other similar types? The two players we do trade for have to be able to come straight in.

Probably not the best analogy, Collingwood did offer Davis a contract, but he didn't rate it, and chose to go back West didn't he?

I think several clubs would have taken Davis had he chosen to go anywhere.

I think you have forgotten LJ

That makes four if you count Lawerence who was a rookie.

And they built that list through shrewd trading and drafting, not picking up free agents. Melbourne on the other hand has drafted relatively poorly and has had very poor player development, both areas we are hoping to see improve under the new football department, so I don't see the lessons of the past really applying.

I have nothing against free agency as long as there is someone out there worth getting, but I'm not seeing it at the moment. For my money the only one I would like to see at the club is Byrnes.

His manager took a chance to start to hawk him around while he has some decent form, that form has longsince evaporated. He will be finding it hard to find any other club to offer him a better deal than what Melbourne was probably going to offer him. Good luck though he was good while he was with us.

Guest José Mourinho

Remember that if Essendung take BJ our pick 13 becomes 14.

Not necessarily -- could be a case of St Kilda signing a free agent themselves, thereby downgrading any compensation.

Moloney is done at Melbourne - I guarantee it.

on the news tonight they linekd him to the Lions as said here. Just have to wait for the paperwork.

Also his managers talks how St Kilda will wait the 72 hours to give an answer, whereas they let BG go today, no fuss.

Which means his manager hasn't really worked out how things are going to work with FA.

Just reading this article on the AFL website. If his agent has made overtures to every other club, I suspect that signs are not terribly good for Beamer. Surely if he has real value the clubs should be making offers to him? To me this sounds a lot like they are not getting any bites and are willing to take pretty much any offer they get.

who cares? he moved on from melbourne. more importantly what are melbourne doing at this crucial time of the year? no point bagging out moloney. moloney, rivers will be snapped up and so will Jurrah. 3 very good players that need replacing just to get back to square one.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
