If we get Wellingham and Dawes for a first round pick I will sacrifice small animals in an attempt to curse the entire recruiting department. A soft outside mid (gosh, we don't have any of those) and a NQR forward for a first round pick is know as a terrible deal. It's very much along the lines of those guys on these forums who come up with "If we package Bennell, Morton and Cook to GWS for pick 1..." A bunch of crap players do not make one good player. A first round draft pick on the other hand, has a very good chance of making a good player.

Funny you should say this... Would you swap Morton (pick 4) or Cook (pick 12) for Wellingham and Dawes? Yeah, thought so.

Not really. I don't want either of them at the club, so I wouldn't be up for swapping anyone for them.

Ridiculous. Period.

It's no secret that Wellingham is neither a gun nor the brightest lightbulb in the box.

He likes the nightlife, he likes the boogie, and he is not worth a cent more than a mid 20 pick.

If we give up anything more than that, we are screwed in the head.

He might be a developed mid, but he sure as hell won't make us a top 8 midfield.

Who would?! The point is, he's about the quality of player we can get, and will help us improve enough that we can start attracting the guns. Once we get up to around 10th-6th the "grade A" players will start seriously thinking about coming to us, but whilst we are 16th and looking hopeless they're all no interest.

I'm really hoping Rory Taggert comes along next year. While Wellingham could play a role for us and add some experience, I'd like to think Taggert will be developed. Harder body and all.

This is at least partly about structure, Wellingham and Dawes do far more for our team structurally than one young underdeveloped midfielder. Dawes and Clark could be a good forward line, and my thoughts on Wellingham are well documented, pick 4 does not seem too bad to me, especially if Viney goes second round. That would mean we would have Pick 3, Pick 13, Dawes, Wellingham, Viney and Byrnes. I'd take that as a good effort given our circumstances, also it will significantly improve our team, add experience (which will take pressure off some of our younger guys) and with some improvement from our core from this year I see us winning quite a few more games this year if the team gels.

Bartram, Frawley, McDonald

Garland, Rivers, Nicholson

Watts, Grimes, Wellingham

Blease, Dawes, Sylvia

Davey, Clark, Byrnes

Jamar, Jones, Trengove

Int: Mckensie, Howe, Bail, Sub:Dunn

Not bad I reckon. Medium/small running backline players would be good, also the backline would have Watts in it and be shuffled if we lose Riv. Could have Howe on a Wing or HF, but with Wellingham in the mix our spread and variety of mid-fielders is looking a lot better.

Inside: Trenners, Jones, Grimes, Mckensie(tag), Bail (tag)

Outside: Wellingham, Blease, Sylvia, Davey?, Byrnes?, Watts?.

Also if Davey can get himself right he and Byrnes would be good small forwards.

There's only one problem with your back-line, none of them can kick to save themselves. How are we going to get our forwards to kick goals, when more often than not, we will turn it over before the ball even looks like passing the center?

Rivers?

I genuinely hope he re-commits to the red and the blue next year, but I'm not convinced at this point in time that's going to happen.

Will be replaced by Mcdonald at CHB anyway

I agree, I think Dunn and Watts would be playing through there, although structurally it looked weird if I wrote it that way. Also yes, I am aware Riv may not be there, I was thinking best case scenario, also Bartram still seems iffy to play again with his knee. I definately think good kicking running backmen need to be a priority, maybe this lineup if riv goes?:

Nicholson, Frawley, Garland

Watts, McDonald, Tappscott/Strauss

Denham just reported that Wellingham was offered big money by the club, but wouldn't even entertain the thought of coming to Melbourne.

Guess we should expect Wellingham in the red and blue next year then if thats what Denham is saying

I won't lose any sleep over that. Means we are less likely to be stupid giving a high draft pick. Now we can look at a player swap for Dawes. Who do Pies want, that's right a ruckman forward?

Wellingham will have no choice, collingwood will need to make room in the cap and he and Dawes will be coming to the dees for ideally just pick 14. Although I wouldnt be surprised if it was pick 14 and either Martin or Petterd.

Hearing that Wellingham doesn't want to come to the club is a big relief for me and has started my day off well!

Denham seems hell bent on reporting negatively on the dees. He hates us and his views on the club were negative years ago almost to an emotional degree. A guy who claims to know him on Facebook suggested he was entertaining the idea

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
