Would we welcome Brett Ratten back?

IF... The Blues finish outside the 8, is there a chance he might get the flick? Club going backwards and all of that. They have a history of cutting what they perceive as their losses.

KB on SEN this morning has them finishing 9 or 10, for what his opinion is worth. Not the easiest run home to the finals.

Should we have a go at getting him back as midfield coach (and p!ss off Brian Royal) if he's available?

I liked very much what he did for us previously.

What is it with Brian Royal bashing

So far this season he has had at his disposal

Jones - if he continues with form should win B & F by a street

McKenzie - is McKenzie

Moloney - injured and out of form at various stages

Morton - trying to teach him midfield role

Magner - 11 AFL games

Grimes - only just got his body right for the middle

Watts - see Morton

Howe - see Morton

Bail - injury, in and out

Trengove - getting him to do more of a tagging role for his education

Bate - in and then out

Jamar - no real back up for him, working like a trojan

Martin - injury, in and out

Green - injury, out of form

Gysberts - injured

Evans - injured

Gawn - injured

Couch - they don't think he is quite ready

Taggert - injured

Jetta - injured

Tynan - injured

So perhaps he knows what he wants in there, just not getting it at the moment, let's wait and see, he has had 11 games as Midfield Coach, he did an alright job with the St Kilda mids once he had sorted out a few issues, most are still going strong

I am so looking fwd to next years midfield if we can fix the bodies, Viney, Taggert, Gysberts, Trengove, Jones, Magner, Couch, Jamar and Gawn

Well, yeh, I mean our midfield is deplorable, mainly due to the personnel.

Our forward line is hopeless because the mids do not give us a decent amount of ball.

Our back half is useless because the mids can not contain the ball.

With an average midfield even Dunne and Bater would be good players.

Nothing to do with Choco, just appalling recruiting.

Look at the stats from Molloney, Mckenzie and Magner, basically playing with three men short every week.

No room for Ratten at our club right now . not even as an Assistant. The current coaching panel need at least next year if not two more to develop our list the way they have started 2012 off. If this doesn't happen we will have wasted this year for nothing. This year is a learning curve for all and we need to have stability in this area to move on.

Loved what Ratten did with out midfield, and was dirty when he left

I advocated him as a potential senior coach for us, but it's looking potentially though as he isn't quite up to grade as the man

Would love him back as a mid coach, don't see it happening

For the record I love brett ratten and he is by far my favourite coach in the afl. I can't believe the criticism he is copping atm and I think he's always been undeservedly under the pump at carlton. Love the emotion and energy from the bench. Was brilliant when in control of our midfield group and would have him back in a heartbeat!!

At the moment, I'd prefer a stab in the eye with a rusty fork over a Brian Royal-led midfield, so obviously getting Ratten back would be a huge benefit. But it won't happen. The blues will come home with a wet sail and win at least one final, thus keeping Ratten safe for at least another year.

Can we get Scott Thompson back too? Ratten's 1 year stint as midfield coach resulting in demigod status around here never ceases to crack me up. Along with Brian Royal is the antichrist. Maybe we should invent a time machine, go back to 2000 & get that guy who turned our midfield from 14th to 2nd in a year with the loss of Todd Viney! Yeah let's get that guy - What was his name? Brian something?

Yes. If the Bues let him go - and I reckon they will - swoop and grab him asap.

And for those who cannot understand why so many are "down" on Brian Royal as our midfield coach, read Demonland over this season and amid all the emotional stuff-and-nonsense, what is the consistent theme? That our midfield is our problem. Our midfield was better last year when Royal was not the midfield coach and they are almost the identical set of players.

And since then, absolutely nothing else whatsoever has changed of course other than Royal becoming the midfield coach.

I don't think Royal is the anti-christ, but the benefit when Ratten was our midfield coach, and the clear drop off after he left was evident

All past tanking coaches end up in South Australia.

My tip is he'll be at the Power next year.

By that logic Bailey>Viney>Neeld?

I've had an about face though. Of course we should get Ratten! Forget the last 5 matches of 2004 where our midfield got smashed, he'd shrewdly teed up his first gig at Nar Nar Goon 4ths. I would worry too much about Carlton's 1 finals win under him either. I mean look at their midfield - Chris Judd, Marc Murphy, Kade Simpson & co aren't a patch on the Melbourne class of 04. Give me Godfrey, Ward & Johnstone any day of the week!

  • 2 weeks later...

Mark Maclure, a lifelong Carlton man, just stated Ratts will not be there next year. I'd welcome him back. With Viney, 2 new other gun midfielders, Jones, Grimes and depth players, what might he do with a fresh outlook?

Why would Neeld invite Ratten into the fold . I must be missing something here

He will be fired sooner or later so yes absolutely I would take him back. He would probably want to come back too. Players make coaches look good and if our midfield fires up over the next few years it would make Ratts look pretty good for another coaching gig.

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season.
