Fitz is the answer. Seriously. Neeld prefers his 2nd ruck to go forward, clearly. Fitz knows how to ruck. He also plays forward a lot - he's kicked at least 10 this year for Casey.

Martin clearly not fit I presume (not playing for Casey = not a good sign), Sellar pants and we need someone to relieve Russian. Unless we want to relive the days of the Spencil...

No changes for mine!

One of the reasons we were beaten in the midfield and at stoppages was because we were outsized. So dropping Sylvia (who i admit did very little) and Moloney to be replaced by more small bodies is madness.

Poeple have short memories. As little as Sellar has done, at least he has drawn two defenders most of the time. Martin on the other hand was woeful in the early games by every measure. Bennell has to earn his spot. Watts might come back in but some of his tackling at VFL level was pretty ordinary again.

Tappscot faded but had more touches than anyone else early.

The main reason I want Fitz in is because I think he can put in a stronger performance than Sellar in the ruck, who really just jumps and hopes to nullify the opponent. He is getting very little hit outs. The Fitz can get his hand on the ball occasionally and in that time Jamar can contest better than Sellar can deep forward. When Fitzy plays forward I'd use him at CHF as a decoy and try and use his pace to run around whilst I'd direct play through Howe and Clark as the key forwards.

Agree - time to blood anotheree.

Stef Martin must never be considered until he plays to a disciplined effort.

Outs: Sellar - simply having a big body and 'presenting' is nowhere near enough. 4 possessions, zero marks. see you later.

Sylvia - continues on his lazy, merry way

Magner - has dropped off noticeably, looks tired and needs a spell

Ins: Fitzpatrick - can't do any worse than Sellar, can give Russian a chop-out, he's earned a debut

Blease - Desperately need quick run and carry. It's either him or Bennell. Yikes.

Couch - Direct replacement for Magner

I'm thinking Magner as a sub to come on and smash it in the midfield. Can't quiet bring myself to drop him after a string of handy performances even interspersed with a few average ones. His tagging game on Boyd and his tagging/hunting the footy job on Dal Santo whilst sustaining 10 different injuries were underrated I thought.

I'm loving the hate for some players in this thread. Some people are completely unable to see past their little pet hates. Lots of beating dead horses over Dunn and Bate. Hate to tell you this folks, but we need them both in the starting side. Bate remains the only midfielder in our side who can hit targets inside 50 (although Morton showed a bit today) and Dunn is by far our best defensive forward. It was a huge mistake to have him as substitute today. Scarlet did pretty much whatever he wanted with Sellar to mark.

For mine, Sellar has to go. He was pitiful today. Replace him with another tall, either Martin or Fitzpatrick if they feel he's up to it.

Dunn needs to start on the field. Give him the job on Gibson.

No other changes needed.

Out : Sellar, Sylvia, Tapscott, Bail

In : Watts , Petterd, Bennell, Blease

I didn't see the game as I was busy in the extreme. But from what I can garner >

I think Martin may be close to OK.

Ins: Martin, Petterd, Blease,

Out: Sellar, Tapscott, Davey

Out: Sellar and Tapscott

Jurrah needs another game or possibly two at VFL level to build up his match fitness

Watts did not do enough to address the reasons for his omission today

Close to game - Couch and Petterd

Fitzpatrick is not the answer, worth a try but by no means the answer until he can learn to kick properly.

Hawks are not quick through the middle but hard as nails and they run hard, so despite Bail being off today he stays. Hawks defence can be exploited if Gibson is out, Dunn to nulify Hodge across half back.

Sellar is the obvious out but do you bring Fitzy in to play 2nd ruck or go more mobile with Petterd forward and let Dunn pinchhit.

Bennell & Blease also under consideration for some run off half back

.

Neeld needs to pull Sylvia asde and ask him for something

I'd also play Magner head to head against Mitchell unless they feel he needs a rest

Out: Sellar, maybe Tappy if Bennell or Blease are to come in

In: Fitzpatrick or Petterd, maybe Bennell or Blease

Out Moloney in Couch

I can't see him at Melbourne next year, but maybe that is my prejudice. Either him or Silvia or both have to be moved on. I don't like the way he goes about it and again today if it wasn't served up to him he didn't go out of his way to get to the contest. When he does get the ball he burns his team mates consistantly.

Out Sellar in Fitz, lets see what big Fitz can do. He will add a bit of much needed pace and could be a wildcard if given a bit of time in the ones.

Out Tap in Bennell, we need the run and carry and maybe the penny has dropped for Bennell.

Out Silvia in Petterd and leave him in for at least 4 games to see what he can do.

Watts for Bate? or Watts instead of Couch for Moloney? maybe another run at Casey for Jack but we could do with his ability to hit a target.

Tapscott? Had a shaky start, but warmed into it eventually. His kicking off half back was invaluable on a couple of occasions.

My feeling is Neeld's not a fan of letting Jamar ruck the entire game solo. So we'll need another big man to ruck.

In: Watts, Martin, Couch, Blease

Out: Sylvia, Sellar, Moloney, Bail

Jamar had a shocker , his hand passing is woeful.

Sellar competes well but had a shocker also .

Dropping Tappy or Sylvia would lead to more turnovers .

I'd rather see Watts off half back than Sellar fumbling around.

Martin has more tricks than Dunn.

Bail , McKenzie run well but have rough skills

IN: Fitzpatrick, Petterd

OUT: Sellar, Sylvia

Sellar has to go and Fitz is the obvious replacement to play forward and pinch hit in the ruck given Martin hasn't played at all in 3 weeks.

i bring Petterd in for Sylvia as I reckon Col could do with a run for some form at Casey and would like to see Petterd & Dunn both playing as defending forwards. Dunn goes to Gibson and Petterd goes to Hodge.

Wanted to get both Bennell & Couch in there but just can't find room just yet.

FB: McDonald, Frawley, Bartram

HB: Garland, Rivers, Grimes

C: Trengove, McKenzie, Bate

HF: Howe, Fitzpatrick, Petterd

FF: Dunn, Clark, Davey

FOLL: Jamar, Moloney, Magner

EMERG: Bennell, Couch, Watts

In an attempt to maintain team balance:

Out: Sellar, Tapscott

In: Fitzpatrick, Bennell

I want our second ruck to be able to take a mark, Sellar can't. I'd still prefer Martin, but I don't expect him to be in a condition to walk straight back in. Fitzpatrick is apparently coming on in leaps and bounds at Casey, so I'd like to see that change. Clint Bizkit reckons he's not the answer and he's probably right, but he can't be any worse than Sellar.

I think on balance Petterd is probably a more suitable replacement for Tapscott who is struggling, but I chose Bennell instead for two reasons - firstly because his form has been first rate in the last two weeks by all reports so he needs to be rewarded, and because he adds pace which we need.

There's no doubt there's still a number of NQRs in the side (like Bate and Dunn), but I don't think now is the time for wholesale changes. The effort of those guys have been good and largely sustained so they stay in the side for me. The idea of dropping Sylvia and Moloney is fanciful - at the end of the day these guys are in our top few players and I'd only like to see changes that actually strengthen the side, and we've got to be kidding if we think dropping Moloney and putting Couch in strengthens the side.

I also think Bail had a dreadful game, I'd like to back him in to turn it around.

One of those weeks where I reckon I'll change my mind a number of times before the week is through.

This is one aspect that is very frustrating about the VFL affiliation system.

It's certainly becoming more of a challenge. At the start of the season I was saying that we (the supporters) shouldn't make any judgements until at least 6 weeks in. So, here we are and I think some things are becoming clearer.

1/- The players are getting better at implementing the game plan week by week. We are many times let down by our disposals which are often buttock-clenchers.

2/- Players that have been identified as 'core' will get more than one week to show their worth. However if they consistently fail to deliver, they will be dropped.

3/- The coaching team have been able to extract better performances from some 'core' players but are struggling with others.

4/- We are not currently the team that other clubs do not want to play against. In fact, we (the oldest club) are ranked with the two newest clubs. It's going to be a bit longer than we'd hoped.

Changes for next week, I don't think any of the core players should come out. I think it's down to the 'fill-a-gap' group that would be under scrutiny e.g. Sellers & Dunn. But, then again, I didn't think that JW should/would have been dropped! Wrong!!

In: Fitzgerald (has some of things that Sellars lacks like speed, endurance & ability to take a contested mark. Has a shocking kicking action but hard to compare with Sellars' as I can't recall him getting a kick). Deserves a shot.

In: I don't know who else as the only player who seems to be consistent delivering at Casey is Couch and I don't think we can fit him in. Having been dropped (and we don't need to panic just yet), JW needs a week or two more to show that he's learnt what's required and LJ (a walk in when he's fit) is not.

Looking forward to a great contest and not to be embarrassed (hopefully) on national TV.

Jim, It's Fitzpatrick... And those wanting Martin back in......He hasn't played for three weeks.....Is still injured......And would want to get some confidence back or look like he wants to play.....

Oops...and I took so much trouble in previous posts to get Joel Mc and Tommy Mac right! Just shows I can be confused when there's only one Fitz..... Apologies to Jack if he's masochistic enough to follow any of our threads. I really do know who he is.

Hmmmm.... This is a bit silly for mine.

You don't like the way he goes about it? Moloney is one of very few MFC players capable of winning his own ball, and I don't think trying to break through the lines rather than handballing to a stationary teammate 2 inches away is "burning his teammates". He and Jones are the only two fighting to win the ball and you say he avoids the contest and wants it "served up"? Totally off the ball on this one mate, although I would love Couch to come in.

However, so far I'm finding it hard to disagree about Sylvia. Not too surprised though, would have thought he'd be one of the players that wouldn't click with Neeld.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
