Changes for Round 5 vs St Kilda

Jack Watts, please eat more protein bars.

Did you see the mark he took leading to his goal? Wrestled his man, tossed him aside and took it easily. His issue is that he get the fumbles when he's tired. I think it's more a matter of fitness than strength, although he does need both to improve.

I saw that and I was thrilled.....more, more more.

I'm forever looking for Watt's positives and there are plenty there to like. The example you quoted was hardly a sign of improved strength. If dwarf-tossing becomes an Olympic sport, Jacks our man.

Those knocking his dropped mark are being overly harsh - I reckon he did well to even get to that contest

Injury List is up. This week's mystery is a double banger:

- Is Taggert now available, if so wonder why they don't mention it

- when and how did Tynan get a 2-4 week foot injury?

Be good to see Jurrah and Sylvia back, wherever they play. Liam probably needs at least a couple of games at Casey.

Round five injury list

Mitch Clark (neck) - test

Michael Evans (back) - indefinite

Max Gawn (knee) - season

Brad Green (finger) - 3 weeks

Jordan Gysberts (ankle) - 2 weeks

Neville Jetta (ankle) - indefinite

Liam Jurrah (wrist) - test

Stef Martin (hip) - test

James Strauss (leg) - 1 week

Josh Tynan (foot) - 2-4 weeks

Out: Joel Mac, Tapscott, Tom McDonald, Sellar

In: Grimes, Sylvia, Martin, Couch/Petterd

Joel Mac, god, I like his attack but in the modern game if you can't kick (which the majority of our backline can't) then you get butchered. Batram hanging on by a thread, perhaps because he is in the leadership group.

Tom Mc has a future, but needs to have a spell at Casey to work on some of his deficiencies. Kosi out doesn't help his case.

Tappy just does not look fit at all, was limping towards the end of the game, give him a rest and then a couple of hitouts at Casey (as much as I love him)

Grimes and Sylvia should add some much needed class.

Endeavour needs to be replicated.

Martin was not dropped, he has a few issues with his hip playing up, assume it wasn't up to this week, I actually spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and he was very disappointed it's picked now to play up, he had an op on it a couple of years ago, if posters must vent their spleen, then at least get the facts correct....and....

Lynden Dunn was given a job in the second half to stop Bob Murphy who was cutting us up in the 1st Half, he had 18 or so touches in the 1st and 6 in the second, I wonder who stopped that, try watching the game and listening to what the coach has to say...

Yes I am as disappointed as the next poster that we lost, but I have never and will never bag individual players, it is a team game, notice Matty Bate got away with it this week and Morton, what's wrong posters....did they play well?

Maybe they played better Satyr, better, not Well, but better than they have previously?

Is it wrong to want the players of mature footy age to perform, as one would hope for them after so many games @ AFL level. We're talking dunn, Bate, Morton played enough years & games to pull the plug out & go for it. These types who rightfully should be Expected to play hard footy & perform for the jumper & the crowd that continually comes out to support them all for years???

I don't think thats Wrong at all. In fact some have had it Way Too Easy & they've been allowed to grow in cotton wool. Timmy Watson was playing senior VFL @ 16 Years of Age, in a very rugged time of the game.

You'ld think that dunn & Bater, & some others, could continually show some aggression at the ball & at the contest. Not masquerade...

For those calling for Dunn's head, it won't happen if you understand modern footy. He wont get much of the ball next week either and I'm sure Mark Neeld is hoping Sam Fisher doesn't either. Dunn straight to Fisher

I can wear that, IF he cuts Fischer out, for sure.

I think it's a bit of all three.

and I think he needs to learn to toughen up mentally, to Push through these thoughts of tiredness. like a marathon runner has to first learn to push past the limits he imagines.

So endurance, Strength for sure, & work on the mental approach to fatigue.

I've been thinking the same, that it might be time to give Tommy a rest for 2 weeks, to freshen him up.

Totally agree. The two mistakes in the third to cost us a goal were painful to watch and were clearly a concentration issue as much as anything. After the goal the camera showed him and he looked exhausted. Needs to maintain his concentration when he feels like crawling into a hole and sleeping for a week.

Outs- Watts, Macdonald, Macdonald, Clark(if he plays Dunn out)

Ins- Couch, Petterd, Grimes, Davis

Watts cost us the game today, that dropped mark was horrendous and the biggest turning point in the match, im not Watts bashing its just the facts, the 2 macdonalds are never to pull this jumper on again

idiotic Watts comment.........wake up.

idiotic Watts comment.........wake up.

He also said "the 2 macdonalds [sic] are never to pull this jumper on again". Obviously a troll, nobody with a brain would write off Tom McDonald after a grand total of 5 games. Think his username is apt.

Give Watts a break. Yeah he dropped the mark but how many marks were dropped for the game? Our poor kicking/handballing skills cost us the game not one dropped mark!

Agree. Yes he dropped a mark, but he has been in our better players over the first 4 rounds - disappointing though they have been. Drop everyone who made a mistake last week and we don't have a team - get a grip !

Tom Mac & Tapscott are not ready.

Don't really mind who comes in. What I want to see is some energy for the content, some endeavour & some flair when we move forward. There is no enthusiasm there at all.

Watts was one of many, we cannot hold on to marks, all players are one grab then out onto ground, one of our main problems. Watts was one of our bette rplayers so get off his bloody back dipstick.

IN: Fitzpatrick, Grimes, Petterd

OUT: J. MacDonald, T. McDonald, Sellar

FB: Garland, Frawley, Bartram

HB: Grimes, Rivers, Bail

HB: Watts, McKenzie, Bate

HF: Howe, Dunn, Petterd

FF: Fitzpatrick, Clark, Davey

FOLL: Jamar, Moloney, Magner

INT: Jones, Morton, Trengove, Tapscott

EMERG: Blease, Couch, Sellar

Seeing as Sylvia hasn't played for 5-6 weeks now I reckon he should have at least a week in the VFL to blow the cobwebs out.

My changes were based mainly on trying to create a bit more run and not so top heavy. Sellar gave us nothing, Joel Mac was terrible and poor old Tommy Mac was very nervous.

v

Ins make sense except I don't think Petterd should come back in until he puts a minimum of 2 or 3 games together in the twos. If a player is dropped (as he was) it probably indicates that he lacks effort, fitness or skill. I think that players need to earn their places in the team barring a catastrophe. Fitzpatrick always puts in and has probably earnt a spot given Sellars has struggled. I could also understand if the selectors decide to persevere with Sellars for a notes couple of games to see if he can lift.

I normally pillory Bartram on this forum for his disposal and decision-making, but I actually thought he was one of our better performers yesterday. The sooner we find a replacement for him the better, but at the moment he does things no one else on our list seems willing to do.

No mate.... stick to your normal policy. We are not going to have an effective backline with a small back there who can't even start a threatening rebound let alone finish one. In today's footy there is no place for a pure stopper - particularly one who is not big enough to apply any real physical pressure.

The fact that Barts is getting a regular game just demonstrates how poor our options are at the moment. He'd get a game at GWS - and probably the Suns - but no other team would look at him. He could be a terrific mentor for our youngsters in the VFL - and might be a useful depth player when injuries hit - but he should not be part of our best 22. What's Barts willing to do that others aren't .... run along 5-10 metres behind his opponent in the hope that he can knock it out of bounds?

Tommy Mac might have weaknesses at the moment - but at his age he does have an upside.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
