Leadership group announced; Grimes and Trengove co-captains

Strange with Moloney but I think these fairly useless tittles of 'Leadership group' shouldn't faze him. He is a natural leader and our best on field leader. Kind of similar to Dane Swann being left out of COllingwoods.

It's a bit different though. Swan isnt much of a leader. Good footballer sure, but not a leader. Moloney rallies the troops, organizes our midfield and is always very vocal revving the boys up. Swan doesnt say a word (probably because he's too dumb to :P).

If Moloney didnt want to be in the leadership group, then that's fine. But if he did and he was excluded after the year he had last year, and everything he does for the club, then that's an extremely poor decision by the club.

Still bloody happy for the Jacks though :) I think our third Jack (Watts) will be in the leadership group not far down the track also.

happy with captains

disapointed for beamer- did he do his boxing camp this year?

surprised at bartram in leadership group- if he can get his disposals up he could be very good for us, plenty of ticker

Bartram and Garland are a little surprising as leadership group members, but they both fight hard. It's a trait shared by all the leaders, and not surprising given Neeld's attitude (what I know of it, anyway) to footy.

Bartram yes, but i find Garland a little under-appreciated in public and on this site. He never seems to get the same accolades for playing well even though he generally has the same amount of affect on a game as say a Frawley would. I think Garland in the leadership group is one of the more refreshing elements to come out of this announcement

The reason that Garland is such a surprise is because he barely strings more than two words together.

I personally think Jack Grimes has not done enough on-field to warrant being named a Captain. He must be an impressive personality so good Luck to him.

Congratulations to both Jack Trengove and Jack grimes. 2 Half back flankers.

Franky, Ive had the pleasure of Jack Grimes' company half a dozen times through the Future Fund and other events. Distinctly remember speaking to him at a function before he had played a game for us. Was super impressive then, and certainly is now.

Im 10 years older than Jack and I really try not to play the fanboy role, but have been very stoked on two occasions where he as walked up to me twice before or after a function (away from the event and not wearing dees gear) and taken the time to have a chat without me initiating it. (I suppose that this may only prove that he's a good bloke and remembers faces, but he is very impressive in person).

What makes me most happy though is the complete overhaul of the leadership group. Jamar is the only "old" player in the group (unless you count Jones) - and all the young players who you'd hope would be there are, but more tellingly the players who have failed us as leaders are gone. Brutal, but I couldn't be happier.

Feel the same Nasher.

..

I also worry about what that kind of attitude could mean for a Jack Watts or an Aaron Davey. I don't want to see Wattsy dropped to Casey if he has one bad week so he can get [censored] from suburban footy fans and be the opportunity of a lifetime for some hack defender to prove themselves each week. I also don't want to see Aaron Davey handled in a way that could destroy whatever is left of his confidence.

I know we all want to believe that our new coach is the messiah who will lead us to the promised land, but I have to say that this decision has me a at least slightly concerned about his attitudes about himself and the playing group.

Its better that the FD and new Coach chooses the Captain/leadership than journalists in the media. Watts wasnt ready for leadership and needs to focus on his game. He get more abuse in an AFL ground than a suburban ground. And Davey needs to show he belongs. Given the leadership disaster of last year, he was the worst culprit and should not have been in to start with.

Neeld has sent a clear and unmistakable message that he is putting the leadership of the playing group in the hands of the future not the NQR leaders.

It's a bit different though. Swan isnt much of a leader. Good footballer sure, but not a leader.

NSM and brownlow leads by example and impacts games with every touch and never flinches. Fantastic leader and how do you know he does not say much on the ground from where you sit??

Moloney rallies the troops, organizes our midfield and is always very vocal revving the boys up. Swan doesnt say a word (probably because he's too dumb to :P).

Leadership is more that butt slapping and being boisterous. It looks good for supporters but he disappears when the heats on in the kitchen. He can still smack butts and rev players at 1/4 breaks but he aint a future leader.

Could not agree more about Garland. Undervalued at MFC.

wow just realized how pro collingwood the herald sun are, they have 'shaw being elevated to leadership group' as there main AFL story and no mention of the Demons announcement

you are talking about the real world here.

Collingwood supported by a million nutters sells newspapers the Dees supported by less than a tenth of that do not.

The only reason this news will get much of a run is Trengove's age.

When you think about it how in the hell was Davey ever in the leadership group? He's probably one of the most petulant players we've had on our list in the last 10 years and has done aboslutely stuff all since he signed that massive contract. He really needs to pull his finger out this year. If he doesn't grab that forward pocket role and put pserious forward pressure on the opposition when they have the ball he is as good as gone imo. He's been worked out down back and that total squib job against St Kilda was sickening.

It has nothing to do with whether Garland's playing ability - if you check out my post history you'll see I'm a fan.

I'm suggesting it's surprising because I bet if I went through threads about captaincy/leadership on here Garland's name would be way down the list of nominees.

As CB said, he's not a Moloney-type that many people on Demonland expected to be in the leadership group.

Don't feel sorry for Beamer.

When the players nominated their choices for the leadership group.

The administrators did a spell check and found we don't have a Maloney.

I understand, and i think we agree. It is surprising when you look back and think, nobody has mentioned him for the job, then you look at his playing ability and think... wait why hasn't he been mention for it. I like it

Congratulations Boys!

2012 Leadership Group

Jack Grimes (co-captain)- Leadership Qualities, he's had for a long time already, injury prone and hence the need for Co Captain???(maybe).

Jack Trengove (co-captain)- A champion in the making, young, leads by example & years ahead of him. Pretty hard to have split these 2 & what a great call from Neeldy. Congrats boys.

Clint Bartram- This guy's courage and endeavour, I have never questioned. Good on ya Barty.

Mitch Clark- Added responsibility for our big recruit, show us the way Clarky!

James Frawley- Just deserves it with all he does for our mighty DEE's

Colin Garland- Willing and very capable of getting a lot better, The Joker of the Pack

Mark Jamar- The big Russian deserves this and will set a great example for the big units in the wings awaiting there turn.

Nathan Jones - Yes, another chance for you Mr Jones, bring it on I say.

The lads that have missed out from last year's LG must feel much lighter now and maybe they can now lead by example. Lets hope so, cause I don't think Neeldy will keep anything Not Bleeding Red & Blue.

Ahhhhh the anticipation is getting me nervous already, I'll b a wreck b4 we run out for Rd 1, just how I like IT.

Franky, I think neither has done enough on field to be captain. Neeld may be naming them because they are closest to what he wants. There is no ideal solution.

Tough on Green. Needed though.

Cheers Mordja. Thanks for that info.

It is a huge task to lead other players who this coming year may be ahead of you as a player.

That said, like most here, I have (seemingly bottomless) faith in the Football department... I just hope the Co-captains dont have too many suits in their ear (Craig, Healy, Schwab, Connolly, etc) before a game. I also am really going to get behind Greeny and Beamer as they have had a bit to swallow in this move.

Looks like we will have lots of leadership down the back this year.

Of the 8 in the leadership group - Frawley, Grimes, Bartram and Garland train with the defensive squad;

Jamar, Jones and Trengove are in midfield, and

Mitch Clark represents the forwards.

I just have a feeling that Grimes will stay with the backline at least for this year. He's had 4 interrupted years and was with the rehab group till Christmas, so he might not be fit enough to do the extra running required in midfield at the moment.

Mitch is going to be the key target up forward. His job will be to lead and organise the other forwards, so it makes sense to make him a part of the leadership group. It may not necessarily be to score the most goals.

I agree that some of the former leadership group have paid the price for our performances last year, and not just the 186 match. Good. A lot of the old coaching panel have paid the price too.

Bartram is interesting. There was an earlier thread that named Jamar, Trengove, Frawley and Bartram as the only listed players who were guaranteed of getting a game in round one. The coaching panel love him. They really really do love him.

And of course both Grimes and Trengove are articulate and presentable.

And in this sporting/commercial environment (like it or not) such attributes are important.

Unfortunately Brad and Brent were a little wanting on that score!

Very bold move by the club - well done showing the courage and conviction to go for two of the younger lads to lead us into a new and hopefully successful era. Beamer very unlucky - personally i think he should be in the leadership group at the expense of Batram as I'm not convinced he's in our best 22.

A leadership group of 8 for a list of 45? Smacks of too many chiefs, not enough indians for mine.

If I was Brent Moloney I'd be devastated. Theres no one that does more above and beyond than Beamer

with his boxing camps etc, as well as his onfield leadership, clearly his couple of off-field discretions

have cost him dearly.

I dont buy into the whole argument that because we had a bad season we have to blame the leaders and

replace them with new ones. How many years would Robbie Flower have lasted as captain with this kind

of thinking? We were on the bottom of the ladder for almost every year he was leader. Not meant a slight

on the great man Robbie of course, merely emphasising the 'lets make changes' attitude to accountability

doesnt sit well with me at all.

Quite obviously simma02 the FD last year and the new one this year have a very different view.

Well, it's better than last year when we had one bald chief, one injured chief, and 44 Indians against the cavalry...

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
