The Big Jimma

Sir Why You Little

Recommended Posts

I hope the players have some sort of Jimma "pact" next year, to play beyond expectations. Jimma must inspire them when he is seen or mentioned. Jimma deserves to see the MFC play finals, it's up to the players to deliver.

Can't remember where I heard it WYL, may have been from Mick McGuane after Sean Wight passed, and he said that you should never let death or illness force you to play beyond your expectations. When Darren Millane died, it was one thing Matthews drilled in to them for the next season. He basically said that every player knew what has happened (or in Jimma's case what is going on), but it didn't need to be spoken about as motivation.

Good luck Jim. Growing up we were pen-pals from when you first arrvied at the club, until well in to the 90's. You'd often write when you were on the plane going to an interstate game, probably sitting next to my closer pen-pal Sean, who used to write to me at least twice a month (and sent regular phots and even his Campbell gloves at one stage!). Having lost my father to cancer this year, which was only 2 weeks after we all lost Sean, your fight has been an inspiration, obviosuly to the greater community, and in particular me and my family.

Doesn't Jimmy just put life in a different perspective.

All the bitchiness that goes on in life including on these forums. For what purpose?

It makes you just sit back take a deep breath and thank God that you and your family are healthy.

My prayers are with you Jimmy, let's hope that you conquer the mountain. No-one deserves it more than you.

+ 1 Jimmy wants the Holy Grail for this club and we all need to embrace and learn from him.

The above posts just bring tears to my eyes.Just shows the spirit of what we think of Jimma. The only time in the future we want Jimma to re arrange the BBQ is when we WIN THE FLAG.

Then we will all celebrate.Just hope all our players live by the inspiration you have showed us all.

God Bless you, GO DEES GO JIMMA.

18 months ago Sean Wight and I were taking his dog for a walk and talking about Jimmy having cancer. Sean said, "If anybody can beat it, Jim will." And Jim will keep on fighting it, as only he can. Slainte, Jim.

I bet Sean was a Fighter too. Wow he went down so quick.

He just keeps on amazing me. Whenever I dont hear anything about Jim I think he is going ok, so when I picked up the paper the other day and read how they were basically having a farewell bbq I was devastated. But we know he will never give up and the doctors wont either.

Its nice that Sam has orgainsed his closest mates there to be with him when he wakes up. I see Garry and A McDonald are some of his mates that are at the hospital. Nayway good news about the op. Keep going Jimmy.

He always has a great big smile, whoever he is with. Ever noticed that ?

The man has a heart many would envy.

Many times I have heard him say, "you've got to keep on going", "you can't give up", "I want to make a difference", when he has spoken of his football career on reflection when younger, mostly referring to himself and what made him strive further when he faced challenges. In particular, as always comes to mind in one of Jim's quotes is - "Whatever it takes".

Truly, Jim Stynes is one of - if not the most - remarkable stories in sport, ever. To have come from Ireland, embark on taking up a foreign code, on the other side of the world, tens or hundreds of thousands of kilometres away from family. And not just participate at the highest level, but succeed and dominate for a while in a long football career in Australian Rules...is...unbelievably legendary.

Like many Melbourne supporters I have been fortunate to have met him. On one occassion was at the launch of Dublin Jim after his 91' Brownlow season. I was one of the last to leave and waited until he made his way around the room taking the time to thank everyone. Which of course, he did. Like mentioned before in this thread, in conversation, he took an interest in others and on this occassion it was me. At the time of the launch he genuinely took an interest of me as a supporter and what was next on the horizon for me, having just finished high school (VCE back then; the HSC equivalent). I'll never forget that. Nor will I the previous time we briefly met up at Mt Buller. It was the year after '87 and Jim was being fitted up for some skii's. I felt for him back then, but you could tell he was well driven and very positive then. And given the circumstances of what happened in '87 and since that day it's been a remarkable and amazing journey to follow him as a supporter. And may the journey continue...

From the time he pulled on a football boot, to the time he crossed the mark, to see his improvement and domination of '91 and winning the Brownlow, all of his playing days and Presidential days - he has faced challenges and has been resilient with a terrific attitude, strong character, to fight for what's best and to be the best you can be.

Whatever it takes, Jim.

I have lost my copy of this video. It is a great doco, does anyone have the ability to put it on youtube? I would love to see it again.

If I could grasp and maintain just a portion of Jims energy and enthusiasm, and just some of his teachings and philosophies then I, the people I come into contact with and the community would be much richer.

It makes me quite emotional to read this thread. I can't help but feel sadness, inspiration, hope, strength, love and despair all at the same time. I can't imagine what it has personally been like for Jim and his family. What a remarkable individual he truly is. And what a remarkably lucky club we are to have him with us. May he continue on to beat this bloody thing, and may all of us learn from him of what can be achieved regardless of the odds and seemingly insurmountable challenges. Jimmy is living proof that no matter how hard it gets you never give up.

We all love you Jim. Keep going mate.

Can't really add too much more to the sentiments in this thread except to send my best wishes to Big Jim from Dublin hope you can beat this bloody thing mate everyone's supporting you.

The thing that gets me is he still finds the strength and will not only to keep fighting this dreaded disease but to lead this club as the President attend training do medi gigs etc The man is a bloody living legend and a testament to the human spirit.

Keep fighting Jimma.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
