Just announced now on SEN. Be interesting what poster's thoughts are about his career.

For me ... okay journo, ordinary writer, Clayton's Melbourne supporter.

A fine sports journo in this town. Especially at The Age.

Much better than okay and ordinary, geez.

He's not covering Wall St, he covers AFL and he did/does a great job.

He is a very good writer IMO.

He is Hemingway compared to Stevens, Robinsion, et al...

Don't know what he is going to do with himself if this is true...

Agree with you but he is at the Hun.

Edit: Read the post wrong, apologies.

He was previously at the Age - he is saying.Especial writer, left nothing unturned or questioned.

I hope he can now devote some more of his time watching the team he supports.

If you asked Mike about it, and I have discussed it with him a couple of times, he would say he lost touch with Melbourne in the '70s and early 80's when he had to cover the game of the round - and we were never in it.

He does retain a lingering affection for the Dees is how I read it, but not the burning passion of regulars on this site.

Still, a giant of his trade whatever you think of him.

He still buys a MFC membership........to his credit.

Not entirely correct - he has always tried to down play his love for the Dees for the sake of his careers credibility.

But he is a definite Dees man, and always maintained strong contact at the club.

If you go back, you'll notice he rarely got his information incorrect when it came to Melbourne.

Heard him on 3AW this morning:

  • he's retiring from the Herald-Sun
  • will continue with 3AW football and Fox
  • the article formerly known as 'Mike Sheahan's Top 50' will remain with the Herald Sun and will presumably be [insert name of Herald-Sun Chief Football writer]'s Top 50 in future
  • refused to name his successor when asked by Peter Blunden (Herald Sun's Managing Editor - Sheahan said it would be like Cameron Ling advising Chris Scott who Geelong's next captain should be)
  • said Wayne Carey was the best footballer he's ever seen, with Leigh Matthews second
  • said Ron Barassi was the best coach

Personally, I think he was a great football writer and speaker. I dread who his replacement might be. I suspect Mark Robinson would be the favourite...but he's definitely not in Mike Sheahan's class (and wouldn't be my choice).

I'm glad he'll still be on FOX. I enjoy him in "On The Couch".

yes agree as soon as i heard he was retiring i was hoping it wasnt from on the couch wouldnt be the same without him

Mike Sheahan has always been the classic fish & chip wrapper journalist. I always prefered him speaking to print. Many of his articles were written 36 hours after a story had broken, when all the pieces were found. That said he will be missed if that obnoxious drunk Mark Robinson takes over the chief mantle. Sheahan is a genius compared to that excuse.

Mentioned on MMM this morning his most memorable articles to be Bernie's purchase of the Swans, the $1 million captain sale and the recent Malthouse articles stating that MM would not be part of Collingwood despite his contract and MM leaving Perth for Collingwood with a year left on that contract. Eddie may have regretted the question being asked. Poor bugger :(

And Mike Sheahan was a very good footballer at VFA level IIRC. I would be surprised if Robinson ever played at all.

He was spot on with TS, I will never forget his incredulous look at the famous March 2011 press conference.

Well, that is somewhat of a fallacy as I vividly recall Mike in a short video on the Hun site saying "it looks as though he will stay."

So, he may be a fine journo but was as dumbfounded as the rest of us.

I am sure he did not believe it.

Look at the sentence

"It looks like he will stay"

My memory is he was never confident in that comment.

Any way still liked him a lot.

Sometimes I did not like the message but it was mostly difficult to argue with the logic.

I haven't been able to get this to work at...work...so if it actually is loadable - this is what Sheahan said after that presser in March.

You are after me on this one rpfc.

I can't see it either

I liked him end of story.

Hey, I like Mike too.

But the reverence his views are held in can be challenged.

And he isn't dead, OD.

He will do the occasional piece and be on the radio/fox.

Shame, because he's one of the few that is actually listened to by the masses, and has a voice both in print and TV. There are others like Whateley that are awesome, but because of their educated and reasonable attitude, and respectable journalistic integrity, they are largely ignored. Hopefully one of these ones can step into the void. Lord knows if we have to put up with Robinson the sport will be worse off for it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
