Green on captaincy (2011)

I currently have no interest in anything Brad Green has to say.

Then why post in this thread?

Green remains an impressive bloke and clearly committed to the club whatever the outcome.

For whatever faults he may have, he is a 200+ game, 10 year player at the Club that should deserve appropriate respect.

Give the guy a break. He was not alone in having a bad year in 2011. Maybe he's not a born leader, maybe he found it hard to deal with the pressures put on him by a plethora of issues throughout the year, maybe he got it wrong a few times but he has been, and remains, a loyal soldier. It's easy to judge from the armchair.

2011 was the only years that I can recall where Green had a bad one. Almost everyone was in favour of him getting the captaincy but it just didn't work; that aside he has been a fantastic player for us and it is a shame that he is remembered for the the one bad year and not the plenty of good ones.

That's right and clearly Green knows where he stands for the moment.

Neeld has pulled the right reins to wait until March. They can impress as much as they like until then.

Wondering if Friday mornings session will be a ball breaker.....given Monday & Wednesday's lighter versions.

Ordinary post.

Is it? I don't know. I've heard the same thing over and over from Greeny for at least a year. To be honest, I'm not particularly annoyed at his performance, because he's got company in that department; however, I am fed up with the kind of answers he gives. That's why I have no interest in anything he has to say . . . at the moment.

And to Rhino Richards, I do have an interest in who is Melbourne's next captain. That's why I posted in this thread, which is not just about Brad Green. Brent Moloney might be a better choice for 2012 than Brad Green, and I'm hoping to receive some news about the role, if not now then later in the year.

I love blokes that get stuck into Green with the benefit of hindsight. I recall reading several threads both here and on Demonology and many of the well known posters of both sites were all for Green as Captain. Everyone suggesting him as he was the most experienced etc and that there were really no other options. A clever few suggested Moloney but the majority provided opposition to that thought. 12 months have passed and now we all think Beamer is the man.

He should have been given the gig before Green. Anyone that has watched Greeny from day dot could see that club leader and captain was not a role that was going to be something that came naturally to him. He has always been a great player for us but when the chips were down he was never the one to throw a bit of mongrel and rally the troops. Maybe we don't have anyone at the club at this stage that fits that mould, but surely Beamer is the closest we got.

It was a mistake appointing him last year and I expect Neeld to totally overhaul the leadership team based on what he sees over the next four months.

I think the team was that bad that you almost give Green another year as captian and hopefully someone really puts their hand up in 2012. None of our leadership group stood up when it mattered in 2011 as soon as the preesure was on the all went missing, Grimes has an excuse but he needs to get his body right. Our leaders were flat track bullies in 2011, I want to see someone stand up when things aren't going our way and say follow me boys I will get us out of this. No point making a change unless we are sure the person we will change to is up for the job.

Tingay02,

Imagine how I feel voting for Rivers as Captain back then. Actually feel ok given his 2nd in the B&F......Talk about going against the grain here. :P

I don't think you speak for everyone by saying "now we all think Beamer is the man."

Do you subscribe to the thought that Moloney looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane?

Good article. Top bloke Brad, and a long and loyal servant, but whether it was " the burden of captaincy" that accounted for his very ordinary 2011, or maybe the whole club was poi$need by something / $omeone who is no longer present I for one can't say.

It seems a great idea to wait until MN gets a chance to see who performs best in his master plan before making any decisions.

Bail and Nicholson were two surprise packets to roll from Brad's lips IMO.

On 2011 form alone, nobody stands out as one to lead under pressure

Time will tell.

A poster brought up the word "respect". Having met Brad a few times I have tremendous regard for him as a person, I have the utmost respect for his playing career, but I have no respect for him as a captain. I don't blame the initial appointment, but I'll be very surprised if holds the mantle in 2012.

Garry Lyon once said on TFS, "Brad Green is the man to lead the Melbourne Footy Club, don't you worry about that." IIRC, it was when the wheels were beginning to fall off early in the season and the knockers were just beginning to scrutinise Brad's skipper credentials.

Now that the season has finished and with all the new faces and direction the club is moving in, I wonder if Garry's opinion still stands. Would be interesting to know...

Your earlier comment on Green was ujngracious and unnecessary. It was more about you than your interest in the captaincy.

Yes, you're right - I wish I didn't feel that way about Brad Green, and it was certainly unnecessary. All said, perhaps I should have kept that particular thought to myself, but there it is.

"I certainly would, but whatever is best for the Melbourne football club and that's always what I've been about,".

I am still a very firm believer that Green is our only option at this stage going into 2012. Grimes? When he can string atleast 2 years of footy together. Trengove is my choice but just not yet.

Maloney and Chip are our 2 best however they are not the guys you want if/when the "chips" are down and fronting the media.

If it comes down to the players voting then the MFC deciding from there I will put money on Green.

Maybe Pendles when he joins in 2013!!!!!!!!

You don't pick Captains for their suitability in the media.

I cannot stress that enough.

You are not running a campaign or selling a product, you are trying to lead and instill confidence in a group of players.

No not at all Moloney is a good footballer, but like the other members of the leadership group in 2011 went missing when when needed someone to stand up, in the games we lost. Our leadership group last year set the tone for the year, when we played well they usually played well, when we didn't no one put their hand up to and showed they wanted to lead.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
