Ah everytime this kid opens his mouth I get more angry. All the little pot shots. He has spat in everyone involved In this club continually. I hope we give him the worst day of his life when he returns to the G. I'm gonna have to restrain myself from jumping on the ground and giving him a hip and shoulder myself haha.

Let's face it.

An honest interview on the subject from Scully would be short and sweet.

"The offer of $6million over 6 years with some cream on top for the old man was too good to be true so I jumped ship and signed up with Sheedy's mob."

End of interview.

Correct.

That's all that was needed.

The rest is bulltish.

Labelling his decision to leave MFC as a 'more courageous decision' than staying is one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever heard.

So leaving for money is more 'courageous' than ignoring the big bucks to stay with the team that selected you in the draft? Give me a break.

It's kinda like running back with the flight of the ball with the opposition's power forward charging at you on the lead, ducking out of the way instead of keeping your eyes on the footy, and then saying ''well, I actually think it's more courageous not going for the footy, because I knew by not going for the ball I'd cop it from the coach, the fans and the media and I'd be singled out as being a coward, so it was courageous for me to accept that that public backlash would result. The less courageous option would have been to simply keep my eyes on the footy and then not having to face the public scrutiny''.

Good one Tom. But no one's buying that trash.

He has shown courage on the field, but not much courage off it.

Interesting point as a part of this was that JT and T$ were both offered 3 year contracts rather than the usual 2 upon their drafting. Trengove immediately accepted while Scully declined and signed the normal draftee contract.

I hate to call that conspiracy angle...but it does have some genuine merit in hindsight. It would mean that he hadn't signed anything in 2010 with GWS - which he hadn't, and which was what the journos were questioning - but rather had signed it way back in 2009.

I always love a conspiracy theory, but I must say this is the best one I have ever heard, especially on this matter.

If you absolutely love the club and desperately want to be a lifelong Demon, why knock back a 3G contract??

Money grabbing [censored].

Anyone know how much he would get for these [censored] articles?

Nothing extra. Making himself available to the media for the purpose of promoting the club would be a condition of his contract - and all players' contracts I reckon.

The fact that these interviews in competing newspapers came out the same day suggests that the initiative for them came from GWS rather than the reporters who did them.

And HWSNBN had to go along with it.

Same goes with Mark Neeld's media blitz this weekend. He's in both papers so someone at MFC has a media strategy working pretty nicely at the moment. Not much footy news around so pitch the papers access to the new hard man.

It's got us talking.

I distinctly remember this and there were a few (I think over at Demonology) who were worried about losing Scully to GWS even at that early stage.

This character question is really a bit of a joke.

The usual question of how many of you wouldn't take a massive pay rise and 6 years job security begs. And if you say you wouldn't, then equally I could question your character for betraying those to whom you most owe a duty - your family - not a football club. Get over it. He left for money. He has said money was a factor, and then the other reasons put forward are justifications that wouldn't exist if it weren't for the buckets of dosh.

People say "We should have taken Martin". Maybe in hindsight. But no club wasn't going to take TS at first pick, and we got 2 first rounders for him leaving, so whose to say we haven't done better than Richmond? Only time will tell. Also, just because Martin signed at Richmond, doesn't mean he would have signed at Melbourne. You just don't know. We're hardly the best run and most professional club in the land.

You have missed the point. The character issue has nothing to do with leaving and taking the money, but rather the lying about any offer being made. Most don't blame him for grabbing the cash, he just as I have said a few times, didn't need to lie.

No, you miss the point.

These guys can't just jump when they get a better contract. There are strict and strange rules about when and how that occurs. It's the system that creates the liars. If it was my job rather than that of a footballer, and I was choosing to leave for money, I would sign and resign almost instantaneously. If you signed (and we don't know he signed, he may have just "agreed") with a new employer for 12 months from now, would you tell your current employer? Most wouldn't if they wanted to stay in their current employment for as long as possible. Now, if you were asked about it in the media every second week? Would you lie?

He owes you nothing.

And if you think that others here aren't firing shots with a fair degree of the good 'ol tall poppy syndrome, you're kidding.

Choko,

Are you suggesting that the only option available to Scully at his presser in March and then on several subsequent occasions to the media, his club and his teammates was to tell lies?

It seems to be Jim Stynes opinion that that's what happened.

This really teh only issue of consternation. The LIE. That he took an offer..good for him, who wouldnt ( in general ) look favourably upon a massive truckload of money to do the same job at another company ? Few Id suggest. I and others here only took issue with the subtefuge and scullduggery that went on.

He caused one hell of a raucous, and if he didnt cause it he was most complicit in it.

The money is just a number , the destination is just a workplace , but his character was all a front . He's in my mind quite despicable ( Daffy to the nth!! )

Yes, we know that's Jim's opinion and one that's now shared by most of the football world.

However, the question put was whether Scully's only option at the time was to deceive the club and its supporters.

I don't believe that it was and that Scully has to live with that for the rest of his career. He received very poor advice at the time and he would be well advised to now concentrate on preparing himself for the future at his new club rather than reflecting on how he left his old one because reflecting on how he left his old one because that is something which does not reflect well on him as a person.

I have re read your post 3 times and still haven't got the faintest idea what your point is. Mine is clear "HE DIDN'T HAVE TO LIE". WJ's post 115 agrees amd makes the same point. Please explain for simpletons like me, what is the point you are trying to make.

Chocko, i am sorry you are still missing the point!

On march 5 of this year T$ should have told the world that "there is a contract offer on the table from GW$ that i will address at seasons end"

He preferred the option of committing to nothing whilst loving the MFC. He was so badly advised, as were theAFL for allowing it to occur. Jimmy was right.

Left to follow big bucks at the AFL Bigtop under ringmaster Kevin.

the best and most sensible post o this entire scully affair. we all just sound like poor losers bagging this bloke for leaving. we are all die hard fans of the MFC but scully isnt. it was an opportunity not many would turn down and, lets be honest, after 186, MFC appeared to be a fairly rudderless organisation. lets just concentrate on the blokes still wearing the red and blue and remember that as good as scully may be, our premiership hopes never rested squarely on his shoulders (eg, judd and carlton- still no premiership for the blues). i was actually glad the club didnt sign him as the huge salary differential wouldve possibly created discontent amongst the other players and wouldve definitely meant the club wouldnt have been able to compete with the market as our youngsters came out of contract over the next few years.

Choices reveal character.

People judge our choices.

It's life.

I'm happy with how Demonland is travelling emotionally on this issue.

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
