The Leon Davis Thread

BT is reporting on 3aw that talks have broken down between neon leon and collingwood. He has walked and may play in the wafl/sanfl next year.

Would be interesting if we told him to put a price on himself and pick him up in the psd. But I guess GWS would snatch him up first.

He had amazing kicking efficiency out of defence this year. Would love him as a demon if only for a year or two.

I don't think it is money he is after--family matters in the west!

First Fev and now Leon..........Give me a break. Is this a serious topic?

Recruit Leon if-

1- You want to clog the list;

2- You want to inhibit the development of a Blease or a Tapscott or someone else;

3- You want to give our players another example of a mentally soft footballer who turns to water when the acid is applied (and don't give me the AA crap, name a grand final, or even a final that was tough or that mattered in which he has actually played well)

Hopefully my thoughts are clear.

But just in case................... NO FREAKING WAY!

I'm undecided about wanting Leon but I find it funny those who shut down the idea immediately. All year we've cried over our immature bodies and lack of on field leadership. I think Leon would fill a role, an important role - for 2 seasons max. Is this 2 year role > the development of a young guy in the same spot. I'm undecided but I'm sure Needly knows what's best for the team in the short/long run.

He is a senior player and yes he has a mature body but if you honestly believe this bloke is the leader the team has been crying out for then you are delusional.

Finals football is where the real leaders stand up. It is where the men are sorted from the boys. It is where a leader, when the acid is applied, stands up and wins. Leon Davis has had many opportunities in his career to be a leader.

And every time he has faced an acid test he has failed horribly.

That is not the type of player i want at Melbourne. And i'm pretty sure that is the view of 95% around here.

Perhaps the opposite is true Watt & Howe, perhaps it is your thought of actually considering him which is the 'funny'.

(And this is no personal attack on you W&H)

Leon had a great 2011, but had gone missing for the past few seasons in a solid team. He isn't the player we a looking for and we aren't in a position to deviate of our path of building towards the future.

In 2011 i beg to differ there....Before that, absolutely correct.

Was much better this year than last year, but went missing in the finals when it counted.

Went missing..... He disappeared off the face of the planet. Just like in 2010, 2009, 2008...........2002, 2001

.

It's certainly my view GOAG! At this stage in our re-build into a decent footy team, we should not be looking to plug holes in our list with short-term fixes, we should be looking to develop our own long-term solutions. And as others have said, I doubt that Davis would make a very satisfactory short-term fix anyway.

In 20011 he became a very accountable defender....totally revamped....not easy to do.

Credit due.

Accountable in a team with an average 10 goal winning margin. It was made much easier by who he was playing with- don't lose sight of that.

Likewise Maxwell but that is a topic for another thread.

But when the acid was applied to this team- he was one of the ones who failed dismally and he has a career track record of it.

He was bad in both H & A losses to Geelong, he was bad in the Prelim against Hawthorn and once again poor in a grand final.

Credit to him for having such a long career and making the most of his abilities, but unfortunately he was repeatedly found wanting when it mattered and i do not want that kind of player brought to our club for any length of time whatsoever.

There's no pretty way to paint it. That is the lasting memory of his career.

You make some valid points, but the games mentioned where Davis "went Missing" i would say the entire Magpie Side was way below par, so that is not all together applicable.

I just like the way he was prepared to re invent himself...and he did it well- no one is perfect.

But as i said earlier, our New Coach will know better than all of us...Let's see what he does.

Hardest gig in football - small forward in a tight Grand Final. Leon was great this year back and was OK in the GF.

I don't think we should recruit him becaiuse of his age and I think he should endf up at Freo or WC.

Surprising that the Pies couldn't get a trade done when their 1st pick is 50.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
