Jetta's year was plagued by injuries including a broken hand and a shoulder that required surgery. In between he started showing his undoubted talent and his hardness at the football. With a full pre season under his belt he could be a revelation in the midfield.

This really looms as a crossroads season fot Neville - the gap between best and worst must narrow, hopefully upwards. He could be a big contributor, or a flash in the pan.

Over to you Nev

At this time last year I recall saying that in my mind the jury was still out in relation to Neville. There were things I really liked such as his hardness at the ball, tenacity and overhead marking, and there were things I thought he needed to work on such as his consistency within games, the need to kick more goals and his endurance. While acknowledging that injuries have played their part, nothing much changed in 2011, and imo the jury is still out. Nev really needs to put it all together in 2012, or he will find himself making room on our list for what looms as a fairly large intake of new draftees at this time next year.

Honest, hard working but IMO not good enough on what I have seen to win another contract beyond 2012.

Will have to lift a level on what he's shown to date.

Hard as nails, good mark, tenacious tackling, exquisite side-step; has some very handy qualities and I think he could play a role for us.

Give him some more forward coaching and see if he can hold down a small forward post.

Posted

I like Nev, but that side-step has become predictable and clever opponents are waiting for it. Nev offers a lot but needs to develop his opposite side. I think he is good enough to take up the challenge.

I'm a fan of Neville, but if he doesn't take a decent step forward in 2012, he'll be gone, I think.

Possibly unfairly.

Same here. Im a big fan, but being a midfield/smaller player if he doesnt show a bit more this year he might end up gone. Which would again show us how lucky Juice/Dunn etc are

Posted

At the end of last year I also agreed that the jury was out. It's still out but this particular member of the jury is leaning towards him not being good enough. It's a shame, because he's got attributes that I wish some of our other players had.

Posted

Is there a reason why he hasn't been tried as a small defender? I know he's been playing midfield, but his skill set makes him sound like a Matty Whelan clone. Also has a much neater kick than Bartram.

Tries very hard but I think he lacks a lot of confidence. Not surprising with directionless and uninspiring recent coaching. Quite a few players in a similar situation.

Has some really appealing qualities, love his sidestep, but I just don't see him making it. Not a natural goalkicker, not quick enough for small defender and lacks the necessary athleticism to play in his natural mid field position.

Posted

Feels like we are just waiting for Nev to "flick the switch". Has some qualities that are rare of small forward/mid types, but just can't seem to build on the previous week causing him to fall out of favor at the selection table. I like many on here are wondering if and when the real Nev Jetta is going to stand up. He has 12 months to show the world what Neville Jetta is all about.

We wait..........

Tough season, and the next one is make or break.

I can't see him up forward (BP even wrote on the Club's website that, breaking into the team as a small forward, he had been played out of position) and there are a bunch of guys further forward in the midfield queue.

I don't see him making it, but we'll see. There are attributes to like, but not enough for me to think he's a better chance than a bunch of other guys.

Debated this issue heavily today with Deeluded- I agree with you RR he will have to improve significantly to go any further post 2012

Wouldnt mind seeing Nev re invented as a Wrecker type player... He has pace and is a great tackle.

Would free tappy up...

Jetta does not have pace, unless he's that unfit (in AFL terms) that he's pretty much always out of gas and therefore can't show it.

The big issue with Nev is his endurance, he is not a small forward he is a midfielder, the better games we have seen him play he has spent most of his time through the middle. Not to pin to much hope on a pre-season game but Nev's clearance work against Brisbane was outstanding but we never got to see him spend much time in the middle through the regular season. Like most of our young players he needs to get fit and stay fit.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
