End of 1st Round

=============

Gold Coast (Adelaide/Bock)

** North (Hawthorn/Brown) - used in 2010

================

Mid 1st round after non-finalists

========================

GWS (Geelong/Ablett via Gold Coast for O'Meara)

Melbourne (Melbourne/Scully)

I would assume that the pick is taken in accordance with where the original owner finishes on the ladder that year? If we finish below Geelong then our selection is before GWS.

So there are 10 teams that finish outside the top 8 and then there are any priority picks and if the Crows and Bulldogs finish below us they get their after first round selection pick.

So it could be pick 11 plus say 2 priorities = pick 13 plus Crows and Bulldogs finish below us 2 = 15 and that is based on us finishing above 10th because we would push it out by another pick for our after first round pick.

Robbie I think the "mid" first rounders are allocated in FIFO sequence, so GWS (ex Geelong) from 2010 pips our 2011 Mid first round. Anyone clarify?

The "first round after club pick" as you say always reverts to position of original club in year being used

yep, either the 2012 draft's gonna have to be really strong for us to pick up some good kids with the compo picks, or we need to trade them for some good quality players (ie. Mitch Clark).

By gee it will be a cracker- however we have 5 years to use them.Plenty of players will be on the market next year as well.

The after first pick selection must be activated or traded next year and no latter. It's value will decrease the higher we finish. End of first round pick can be held on to for 5 years.

Bonza!

It's end of non-final competing teams.

Even better!

Yes.

But why wait, get them into the club as soon as possible I say.

*Providing the draft isn't compromised the way it is this year.

Viney + 2 other first rounders = win. Do it next year, it'll be the last of our "getting kids" and from the drafts/trade weeks from then on, we can focus on filling the gaps/needs.

and also providing there isn't someone who they think may be available around that pick in the 2013/13 etc draft

That requires quite a bit of foresight..

It sure does rpfc.

Keeping the recruiting officers honest and perhaps a little prophetic.

I think therefore if we finish

8th - 11 (mid round compo pick) pick 12, pick 13 (compo pick after first live pick)

9th - 10 (mid round compo pick) pick 11 live pick, pick 12 (compo pick after first live pick)

10th - 10 (mid round compo pick) pick 9 live pick, pick 11 (compo pick after first live pick)

11th - 10 (mid round compo pick) pick 8 live pick, pick 9 (compo pick after first live pick)

so on and so forth

Dogs - Sam Reid to be allocated

I've missed something here. Why do the bulldogs get another compensation pick?

I was of the understanding that GWS could only poach one un-contracted player from each club.

Have i missed something here or have the rules magically changed?

They can take as many as they like as long as the club they are taking from allows it. Which in this case the Bulldogs did. They probably figured they would get better compo from the AFL then trying to trade / delist him.

Yep - same thing happened with Rischitelli then Brennan at Brisbane last year with Gold Coast.

No, the Suns actually traded for Brennan to my understanding.

It involved upgrading the Lions pick by about 5 spots so they could get Polec, hence the suns having 3 straight picks before us.

The Lions also got pick 25, on traded from Collingwood for Krakouer, and possibly some other scraps.

You're half right - they did trade but they traded their compensation pick for Brennan with pick 10 for pick 5.

If we activate next year we have 3 picks in the first round in a strong draft. JV and 2 more star kids. Shocking position to be in. Go Dees.

Whilst Jack Viney might turn out to be a star, the chances of our CP's which will be around the 15-20 area are not as likely to net us "star" players.

I know that next years draft is meant to be good, but getting such quality all the way down to pick 15ish??? If there are any "star" players available, i suspect they will be well and truly snapped up before our CP's come into play.

That may be.

We can always wave them around in October, see what happens...

The announcement by the AFL that the Dogs have been handed a third-round compensation selection for GWS-bound Sam Reid seems to have thrown that club into orgasmic raptures of excitement if you believe this beat up from the HUN's Jon Ralph - Western Bulldogs set to pounce on super draft.

The Doggies are going to activate their compensatory picks in anticipation of plundering the 2012 superdraft with two first round selections and ... wait for it ... two third round picks.

It surely has to be the quiet season for news when such hype is made of the Bulldogs' possible selections 13 months in advance over them being awarded a selection likely to be somewhere in the 40s!

No wonder their football manager goes by the name "Fantasia".

    Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

    BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

    Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
