Not overly happy with either of these. Morton might make it, but he's just so far off it's crazy. He doesn't do any of the basics well for modern footy besides run. He's got no contested ball winning ability, doesn't tackle well and doesn't execute skills under pressure.

That said I'd like to see what he can produce in a full season at half back.

Martin improved a lot, but selling him at his top value might not have been the worst idea. I just don't think he'll even be a strong tap ruckman or a strong forward target. So really what he's become is a solid back up ruck with solid ability as a resting defender. Is that a useful player to have in your side? I'd love to see him improve his forward game as much as his ruckwork improved this year.

Any news on Scully?

Thought we would have sent Morton to GWS to sweeten the deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great news and great moves by the club.

Especially with Cale.

Supporters don't know everything.

For those that listened carefully to the Presser today re Scully either Schwab or McLardy said "we've signed all our other players".

For those that like to read things into things and particularly that there is something rotten at the club the fact that Scully had to be offered so much to leave and everyone else is signed rather puts those theories to bed I would have thought.

It's nice to read something so clear-minded when I'm so friggin angry.

I'm still laughing.

However, not so keen on Morton just quietly, if he doesn't spend his whole summer in the gym then I will spew up!

I will spew if he continues to lunch easy shots on goal because he hasn't had enough skills training pre-season.

Gonna be a fine balance for Cale.

Maric, dunn and bate(contracted) not that these guys have much value in the market i wouldve thought!!

Maybe under a decent coach they will.

We've discarded players in the past that have found homes elsewhere.

I may be howled down for this, but I think Morton could be the next Adam Goodes.

Like Goodes though, he will take some time to develop.

Adam Goodes would have been harder when he was in a cot.

Good news on the big Stef signing- I love the fella and can see many more years of him in the blue and red!! =P

I've forgoten about Tom $ully already. Little rat!

The Morton signing does nothing for me. He is a puss.

Lets go Demons!!! Rise from the ashes of treachery!

Martin is a great re-signing, but Morton???

Bate and Dunn must be re-signed - a good coach will get the most out of them - they are two of the greatest sufferers of the old regime!

The Scully situation (or is that AD?) is a disgrace - football is the loser - since when is an unproven, money hungry youngster, the oracle on how football clubs should operate?

I will always take a team of players who genuinely want to play for their club, anytime! (Look at Geelong now, or Brisbane a few years ago.)

I knew this was coming, and I wished TS all the best whatever his decision, but I can't hide my disgust at the system that allows this to happen!

I think I feel better now!

Morton has had a bad year, his value would be way lower than what he could potentially become. A new coach could get out of him what we've seen in glimpses. Good move.

well an injury ridden player with a dicky knee who played a handful of forgettable games this year seemed to have some value north of the border.

but.....i don't disagree with you.....just feeling grumpy

... he just needs to get through the pre-season unscathed. Which could be a challenge in itself, Cale has a habit of picking those unexpected "My finger broke when it got caught in a training vest" type injuries ...

well at least his contract would be on the cheap side

i also worry about him if we get a coach who is strong on the contact stuff as someone suggested

Lost scully, kept morton. Good job melbourne

every team would have lost Scully, 2 million first year, then the money keeps rolling in, couldn't be helped but I still think he's a lying scumbag with no integrity.

anyone know the length of contracts?

According to the MFC twitter it's a 2 year extension for both (contracted til 2013).

You have till midnight tomorrow DC. Then snap out of it.

Life goes on and you have much to do!

Well the club has steadfastly backed Mortons ability, most here (including me) get extremely frustrated by him but it is definitely time for him to step up and repay the faith.

Glad to hear we've signed Stef but from what I was hearing he loves the club, hopefully he can continue his development, he's shown he can compete and get his hands on the ball, we just need to get his effectiveness up. I can see Stef and Russian rotating between ruck and forward line next year, it's always great to have a tall forward target to kick to.

Does anyone know who remains uncontracted?

My memory says

Wona, Dunn, Maric, Mcdonald and Green but there are no doubt others.

We now have one vacant spot, how many will be delisted?

Warnock, Green, Maric, J. MacDonald & Wonna are our uncontracted players along with our rookie minus Evans & Nicholson who signed 1 year extentions. Fitzpatrick was also but I heard earlier this year he'd signed on for 2 more years but haven't seen or heard anything from the club confirming that.

Dunn is contracted for next year.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
