Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Great Team Saints, more early draft picks than an other team & only able to kick 8 goals, great desperation but you dont win flags kicking 8 goals!

I have seen many desperate teams of Melb playing finals with Daniher,Balme & Northe

The great Norm Smith said you play to win flags!!

All of the above coaches incl Lyon have come second, history only remembers winners!

Sydney won the flag in 2005 kicking 8 goals..........in one of the best GF's of recent times!

Would you have a problem with the MFC winning a flag and only scoring 8 goals?

That Sydney side was interesting.

The Saints are boring.

I have nothing at all against "man on man" footy. Much preferred to watch 'one on one', to zones and flooding.

Would take a flag kicking 2 goals in a heartbeat, my concern with Lyon is that he has a fantastic list but yet to win a flag.

I just dont want see us getting to finals & losing GF, been there.

No coach can guarantee anybody a Flag...He can just prepare a side to the best of his ability.

St.kilda twice, were so F#$%^in close...i think Ross is a top line coach...so is Malthouse.

I'm not so keen on Lyon, it took him a half of football to realise that in order to kick winning score you need to put your best players forward and leave them there.

I also am not so keen on Lyon. It was he who traded for Peake, Polo and Lovett. Lovett turned into a disaster (and there is plenty of talk going around that he was always going to be a disaster) and Peake & Polo are not up to it. Its the bottom 10 of the saints that beat them.

Disagree entirely. The saints have a few A graders and a decent top half; its their bottom half that isn't good enough. Its to Lyons credit that he gets as much out of them as he does.

Agree- they have Raph Clarke, Dawson, Gilbert, Kosi and an ineffectual Reiwoldt. Their list is average. If they didn't have "the tip rat" they would have been even worse this year.

Ross Lyon just said in his presser "it feels like the end of an era" and "the message isn't getting through any more".

that to me says one thing.

Gone, with a capital G.

Welcome to Demonland Mr Lyon!

Im not a massive fan of the saints game style but they are an honest team that punch above their weight more often than not.  Lyon is an 'A grade' coach who gets his team playing unselfish football with each man playing his role and following the team rules.

These are qualities severely lacking in our team. We may currently lack the star presence of a Goddard, Fisher and yes Rievolt & Milne, but im sure that a Ross Lyon is capable of developing our best to their own potential.

I agree that an assistant coach could possibly have the same impact as appointing a Lyon ala Clarkson, etc, but I think it is a matter of 'better the devil you know'. We know what Lyon demands of his players and what a team under his control is capable of. Appointing an assistant like we did with Bailey has a greater element of risk associated with it and one we can ill afford to take.

I tend to look at it this way, in terms of membership numbers next year.

If an unknown or assistant coach were to come in and coach us, we'd more than likely have 35,000 members in 2012. (backwards)

If Ross Lyon were to come in and coach us, we'd more than likely have 40,000 members in 2012. (an increase)

If Mick Malthouse were to come in and coach us, we'd more than likely have 45,000 members in 2012. (a huge increase)

I think Ross will be coming to the club very shortly boys, heard from a lot of St Kilda boys at the party I was just at saying Ross held the boys at the end of the game on the ground and delivered a very serious message. I think getting Ross would be a massive win, with the list we have he might be able to convert it into a premiership team.

I tend to disagree with this line of thinking. I think the only reason our membership will increase next year (if indeed it does), will be because of the way we play. Win early games against quality opposition and all of a sudden the supporters have a reason to believe we are righting the ship. Lose like we have been these last 4 years and we'll end up with the same loyal 35,000 or so that buy memberships regardless.

I think all Melbourne fans are fed up with the idea of brighter times ahead due to {insert draft pick/new coach}.

The day we can back up our 'talking' with our 'walking' I will get seriously excited.

I've said that I'd like Roos, with Brett Kirk as #2. If that isn't possible, then Lyon and MM are the only A Graders available. We do have a potentially good young list, but there is a huge job to do with bringing some of our senior players into line as well. Is Lyon the sort of coach who will come in and lay down the law a la MM?

I tend to look it that way. If MFC get a Coach that for start wins more games than he loses then the members will come. But iif you are going to use 12 month members numbers as a criteria, we should sign up Rove McManus.

He's out of contract???

He has a get out clause if he gets the chance to bring a "winning culture" to an AFL Club. He might help the TV ratings MFC gets for its games when he speaks to the Richo at half time. On such a cold morning I am warming to this.

I thought the game was a cracker myself and would relish the MFC playing that tough a brand of footy. Boring my arse.

Disagree it was absolute boring rubbish and it cost him the game.

However I am open to him bringing some of this defensive focus to the Dee's as a different list at a different home ground doesn't necessarily mean a carbon copy game plan.

Do we really want this guy??

Two Swans coaches playing under a roof with 3 goals kicked in a final!

Better than losing by 186. Hey ? {Just a tad flippant, but you get my drift..they're playing finals - we aren't, kind of thing...}

Yeah, he should have chosen a coach that would have guaranteed us success. What a pill!

There was no guarantee with the list we had at the end of 2007.

I'm not so keen on Lyon, it took him a half of football to realise that in order to kick winning score you need to put your best players forward and leave them there.

Well, it was allowing the likes of Milne, Reiwoldt and Koschitzke to push up the ground and get involved early in the third, particularly Milne and Kosi, that contributed the the mini revival. So it wasn't a matter of leaving them forward - as he did for the first half.

At the end of the day I would rather have Lyon than an untried coach, but my point is that our last 4 coaches bailey, daniher, balme, northey had no premiership success as coaches, so will the same happen with Lyon? almost climb the mountain but not reach the peak. We have gone on this ride with previous coaches(bailey not incl )

    GAMEDAY: Rd 09 vs Carlton

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again headlining another blockbuster at the MCG to kick off the round of footy. The Dees take on the Blues and have the opportunity to win their third game on the trot to solidify a spot in the Top 4 in addition to handing the Blues their third consecutive defeat to bundle them out of the Top 8.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
