While everybody is talking about Jaeger O'Meara as the big prize in the 17 year old "mini draft" my friends in Beaufort near Ballarat tell me there's another kid in that draft who would be well worth claiming.

His name is Brad Crouch

DOB: 12/01/1994 Height: 184cm Weight: 83kg Club: North Ballarat Rebels (VIC)

Posted

Clearly the 2nd best 17 1/2 year old in the country with Stringer being the 3rd.

kennedy from SA is also a BIG name when it comes to this draft, those are the 4, weather four are traded this year is another thing

I went to school with the writer of that article, good bloke who i went through university with as more of a mutual friend, knows his footy, not that he says alot about the kid as a whole, hard when they only play some U18's and injure themselves throughout the carnival

Last I heard of Jake Stringer he was under an injury cloud after an horrific broken leg.

Any light to shed..?

This mini draft is open for two years and allows GWS to trade four 17 year olds.

I think it would suit GWS to trade no more than two this year and keep its options open for next year.

My guess is that GWS is likely to have first pick in the 2012 national draft if the AFL puts an end to priority picks at the beginning of round 1. They would do that in a heartbeat if GWS are struggling and they want to give them additional benefits.

That said, I'd say that only Jaeger O'Meara and Brad Crouch will go in this year's version of the mini draft.

Competition will be solid.

I could be wrong WJ but I thought all the kids who nominated went into the draft and GWS then auctioned off picks. So only 2 may be picked but they're all available.

There's rumours that WC are interested in some of the other WA kids for example, and the SA clubs may be keen on Kennedy, so who gets picked may depend on who wins the auction.

If Scully goes we'd be mad not to get involved and personally I wouldn't mind us targeting the second pick and going after Crouch rather than O'Meara

Nominees:

Chase Bower (SA), Adam Carter (WA), Brad Crouch (Vic), Dayle Garlett (WA), Brodie Grundy (SA), Matthew Haynes (Vic), Riley Hutchinson (WA), Emmanuel Irra (SA), Ben Kennedy (SA), Aaron Loccon (SA), Sean Lynch (WA), Todd McKay (SA), Jaeger O’Meara (WA), Jonathan O’Rourke (Vic), Jason Pongracic (Vic), Mason Shaw ( WA), Josh Simpson (SA), Jake Stringer (Vic), Shannon Taylor (WA),Jim Toumpas (SA), Nick Vlastuin (Vic),Matt Wallis (SA), Laine Wilkins (WA),Dan Williamson (SA), Chris Yarran(WA)

If GWS get a good price for pick 2 they may even be tempted to open bidding on pick 3, there's some pretty highly rated kids on that list. I'd be happy to offer our better compo pick for Scully and give them a peice of paper with Spencer, Warnock, Dunn, Bate and Maric written on it and tell them they can have whatever they like, all of them if they want, for pick 2. If that didn't get it done I'd consider adding Davey or Morton to the list. Before you all say a fire sale of our rejects won't work, these are exceptional circumstances. Not only do they need some mature bodies and ruck depth but Sheedy is at the helm.

GWS will already have a list full of kids so offering them the compo pick will not excite. Nor will giving them a selection of list cloggers. My understanding is that GWS do not need to use any of these this year or even the following year if they choose to. I seriously doubt we will be willing to trade what will be required to get them to open these up but doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

GWS can't draft these U17 players this year or the corresponding group next year so the only way GWS can turn them into value is by trading the picks in the mini draft. If Scully leaves the compo picks are good for 5 years - that would appeal to GWS much more than picks that have to be taken in 2011. I'd had over all the Scully compensation for one of the early picks in the U17 mini draft - it's the most likley way we will find a star replacement. I'd add to it if necessary. If we get 2 x 5 year 1st rounders for Scully that will take a lot of beating with an established player.

Yeah, from what I hear, GWS are after compo picks and picks in 2012 because the draft is so strong.

They aren't worried about getting a load of mature bodies - they accept they'll be crap in the first few years in any case.

Agree. As Sheedy has mentioned they will go to the highest bidder. I would imagine others would struggle to beat this option. End result...most likely way to obtain a star replacement. Other than trading for a star player which would most likely cost more.

O'Meara is a certainty, Vic team will like Crouch, and i think that SA teams will like Kennedy so will be interesting, especially if they decide to only use 2 this year and these 3 players are in demand

Does Sheedy have any say in who wins any bidding ??

Posted

Well yeah, just like any team decides on which other team they negotiate a trade with.

Sheedy might like sticking the boot into us publicly, but I've heard Freo were originally the favourite to trade for O'Meara.

After his comments on Harvey's sacking, I doubt he'd be too eager to send him there.

I can imagine Sheedy not being too concerned with what picks we get in return, moreso relishing the opportunity to boast about scoring both Scully AND the compensation picks we got for him.

That'd be right up his alley.

If the return is Crouch and/or O'Meara plus change, he can have them.

Posted

Interesting the recent outburst from Sheeds -strongly suggesting that ALL vic clubs poach a Freo player...well..then maybe he should not onsell a 17 year old to them either.

I've just watched a number of AFL videos of the kids.

O'Meara looks a beaut.

Crouch is also very busy player, & effective. Interesting. happy to have either.

Docherty looks good as well out the back half, or anywhere really.

Interesting statement, given what has taken place today involving Freo, GWS, Adelaide and the Hawks. Lyon wants to keep J.Griffen, yet want M.Clark.

Not much talk about Crouch in this thread last 12-13 days. Hopefully TH is all over him.

We may fall short as he may get tied up in a 4 way deal to help GWS around the mini draft rules.

We shoul be okay as Adelaide are not after Crouch - they want an SA lad. Discussed on Trade Week Radio.

Which I cant log onto!

I think the whole GWS circus is a disgrace.

I would love to see the Demons get a player of Brad Crouch's quality.

I think that Jaeger O'Meara is out of our reach...but you never know?

Whoever we get, the most important thing is to not give away "too much" so we end up losing out.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
