How do you know he is better then O'Rourke at #3? Or Toumpas? Or Hogan. What does Viney offer that these players do not?

These are the type of questions our recruiters will be asking.

I don't know "olisik", nobody knows how a career will turn out, it's only my opinion and you're right these are the questions the recruiters will be asking. They will know Viney better than anyone else so if they take him at 3 then they will have good reason to do so. I would love to get him 2nd round but if we have to take him at 3 I don't think we are paying overs, just blinded by the thought of getting him at 20 something...

Offer them Petterd for a 5th round pick and a pass on Viney?

You do realise that Petterd is hopeless and unwanted, can't get a gig in the worst team in the league and GC actually have to REDUCE the size of their list this year? Why the hell would they want a spud like Petterd? They're not a dumping ground for NQR's that can't get a game with a proper team, this isn't the Bad News Bears or even the 1990's Dockers.

The comments on this board absolutely astound me sometimes I can't believe people who watch football all the time and read about it so often to the point they comment on a footy messageboards can have no idea about how the AFL and the clubs operate. To put it another way, would you take Josh Fraser off them if the situation was reversed? I wouldn't even want to waste a spot on the list for him even if we got himf or free.

@emmasq: Combine time. Gold Coast has interviewed Jack Viney & will do again this week but haven't yet told him whether they'll bid for him next week

Even if we didnt get these compo picks, we would still be paying pick 3 for jack viney..

Pick 4 and 13/14 (whatever it will be now) is such a great deal, Jack Viney WILL be a part of the culture change and "elite" improvement at MFC, would give up more than pick 3 for him!!

Settle down fella, it was an example of such a deal. No need to get your knickers in a twist over an example.

All smoke and mirrors.

Part of the charade I would think (hope).

What do you expect them to say? "We will be taking Jack Viney no matter what whether we have to use pick 3 or 26. If GWS or GC bid for him we will definitely take him with our first pick."

I mean really, are people that thick???

No but I do expect them to take the best available. If it be Viney or not.

You expect otherwise I assume?

*There's a good source. And the interview hysteria should now cease. It's due diligence.

And it's Combine time.

Emma is quite a reliable source, it is a worry that he has a 2nd interview, means that the first one wasn't a right off :-(

If we don't take Viney at pick #3 then they we get effective picks 2,3, 11 (Daniher bumps it down) and 24.

We could trade to pick 2 to GWS for a mini plus GWS pick 20 and the Dees have effective pick 3, 11, 20 and 24 this year and next year the gun from the mini plus their pick 1 - 5 (assuming they finish low on the ladder again) ready to play. It also assumes GWS are desperate for pick 2 which is most likely the case as its their last big lick at the draft bowl and the minis cost them nothing anyway.

If GC are interviewing JV why wouldn't we send him in there with a horrible attitude and Gary Ablett Sucks D*** t-shirt just to put them off the scent! ^_^

MFC recruiters have a duty of care to pick up the best available player at #3 whether it be Viney or not.

Could be another player with all the same attributes as Viney but 10cm taller and with more pace available at #3

We won't know until the day

Again I will say, there is 100% no better inside mid in the draft.... none taller or shorter, faster or slower, Viney is the best inside mid so if you want an inside mid, then you draft Viney.

Their are other alternatives to obtaining a good inside Mid then just Viney. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes, for all we know we could be offering our pick #3 to Adelaide for Dangerfield or to Richmond for Cotchin.

It is not as simple as "Viney is the best inside mid so if you want an inside mid, then you draft Viney".

FFS How old are you have you been in the real world long, if you are in a multi million dollar business and are going to risk Pick 2 on a kid who has his heart set on playing for another club what would you do

1) You think he is the missing piece in a jigsaw so you interview him as per a normal interview of prospective draftees

2) Interview a second time because the kid comes across well as he has been in the system a while and would have been through I/V training. Now in this interview you see if he gives away anything he may know of Melbournes intentions and you would ask him what were his long term intentions

The answers in the second interview would determine if Melbourne are bluffing or not, Pick 2 is a big risk for them given what's available and lots of egg on their face if they look at another Caddy situation.

Recruiters have to answer to people if he turns out to be a gun they have to justify not nominating him, if he is with them and goes home after two years they have to justify why they picked him

Olisik you are painful to read sometimes. Just let the people do their job and stop speculating blindly. Its one thing to discuss but don't preach SNF, we've all been there and left disappointed. Kim H makes Mark Robinson look like the Dalai Lama.

Just how MFC interviewed Nataniu and D Martin?

What have i speculated?

In fact I am the only one here not speculating and saying "we will take Viney 100%"

Viney will be ours, i can only laugh at anyone suggesting we would not use pick 3 on him

The kid will be the best player from tihis draft, not to mention he loves the MFC and would never leave us like for example, Tom Scully and Scott Thompson

This is commonly referred to as speculation.

I am not going to come out and say he is going to be the best player from the draft, but from my point of view he is the safest choice out of all the top 10 picks.

speculate - to believe especially on uncertain or tentative grounds

What am I believing here? This is more of suggesting an example....not speculation.

How about we give them Petterd for a 5th round draft pick???

It's nothing personal against you it's just getting tiresome to sift through the [censored] here, making Demonland almost impossible to read.

WTF? someone asked for an example of a possible deal and I gave one. Read the quote in that post.

If you hadn't realized the point of that example was to be a deal skewed in GC favor to let Viney slip through. Does that really need to be spelt out to you?

If i were speculating I would have worded it as 'Apparently we are in talks to trade Petterd for GC's 5th round pick'

Grow up and read things properly before making such a hypocritical post.

If we don't draft Viney I will microwave my membership card.

The jury is still out on the MFC's new look, but one thing is certain, if we allow Viney to run around in a GC jumper, we not only loose out on potentially one of the hardest players to ever play the game, but we will also go a very long way to loosing the faith of every MFC supporter who has been waiting for the day that Viney Jnr plays for the MFC like his old man.

Can you imagine MFC playing a strong GC in years to come and JV ploughing our blokes into the turf and us lamenting what could have been? We talk about club culture, this is a perfect example how to set it, and get a gun son of a club champion in the process.

In case the arm chair experts are wondering to be top 10 in even a weak draft means you have enormous talent. Mix that with innate skills like hardness and commitment - thats when you get the good AFL players. From what I've seen Viney ticks all the boxes.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
