Apologies if this has already been mentioned today. It was in the Herald Sun paper, but is not in the Herald Sun online. This link is to the Northern Territory News:

Dees next on AFL's biggest stage: Davey

And Davey's tip for Saturday's premiership decider?

"I don't really care, but I suppose Collingwood has the form on the board," he said.

"Either way the winner on Saturday will be playing Melbourne in next year's grand final."

I think he will become vice captain to Brad Green but great to see Davey in this spirit and confidence

I think he will become vice captain to Brad Green...

Agreed and I sure hope this is what eventuates.

For mine, I'm not a fan of having an Aboriginal captain. It's not being racist by any means... but I do feel that Aborigines seem to stick by one another a lot more - i.e. after games when they tend to all gather 'round one another etc.

That's just my take. Aaron is great in recognising and promoting the indigenous community and I'd like to see him stick to that leadership role (and be added to the leadership group!).

I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a Brad Green leading the charges.

I think Aaron would make a fine captain. Has done everything right by the club since he joined. I'd prefer him as leader because of his midfield role. Brad Green I feel is going to spend most of his career in the forward line in the future. I think an on field leader should have a more central role on the field.

Who knew minorities needed to form some stronger bonds with each other than middle class white people...

It's not racist, it's just really condescending.

Such a bizarre post Deezman.

You should be dragged for that one.

Spend the rest of the game on the bench.

i am sure Aaron could do both really well. If he captained the club it would just make the Brothers stronger and more respectful of him.

That could be a great thing going forward.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups.

Whether you want to term it racist or condescending, whether the claim is true or otherwise, I think it's improper to single out someone as being unworthy for the position based on their race.

No, not just improper - highly offensive.

Deezman, I agree. You have the balls to say what people are thinking except wouldn't with fear of being called a racist, condecending or offensive.

It has absolutely nothing to do with race, Brad Green will be a better captain SIMPLE.

Not surprising to find you agreeing with such utter dribble

Imo, there's racism in virtually everyone, it's just a matter of degrees.

As for Davey as captain ? No. I want someone who is strong in the contest and would crawl over broken glass for the footy while taking the opposition down with him. Davey is a good footballer, but not captain material. In fact, we don't have an ideal captain at the club. Green isn't hard, but he's incredibly brave, so he'd begrudgingly get my nod. Best of a bad lot.

I yearn for the days when Trengove, Grimes, and Scully are ready to take the role. Until then a caretaker it is.

It's not just the racism inherant in the post it's the utter nonsense that Davey wouldn't be a good captain because Aborigines stick together. Jeez, I've heard some crap on here but that is over the top.

The rest of your post is spot on.

I'm not sure which one is more stupid...

To call either of you a cretin would be showing kindness.

Man this thread has turned extremely bizarre, i don't know if Davey would be my first choice as captain but if he was to be chosen i know he was be extremely honored to be our first aboriginal captain in over 150 years. The only concern i have with Aaron is that he is a spark player and when there's no spark in his game he looks lost. Green and Moloney are proven consistent performers and will always put their bodies on the line for the team.

Green for me, with Davey as VC. But having said that, if the Flash gets the nod i'm sure he'll do us proud.

I actually find it hilarious that 2 people could be so blind.

"It's not being racist by any means... but *LAUNCH DIATRIBE BASED ENTIRELY UPON RACE*"

And then for someone to support it and try to tell everyone it's not racist!

My lord, there is just no helping some people.

Hannabal actually got it spot on - everyone is racist, it's just a matter of the level.

I acknowledge racism is defined as involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. But doesn't everyone feel their own race is more superior???

My comment was not a massively racist remark like some are suggesting - merely pointing out what I have seen with the indigenous players during and after games etc (of course, we don't get to see what happens behind closed doors!).

So saying that I don't want an indigenous player as captain because they stick too much to their own kind/race is being highly racist, is it? Some people are so precious...

I understand. I wasn't being his apologist, although I wasn't as offended as some.

It's racist on all accounts DeezMan regardless of what you are trying to imply.

You are saying you don't want Davey captain because he is an indigenous Australian. That right there is racist.

I beg you to read and learn about Indigenous issues in Australia. Maybe do a short course in Indigenous studies.

Then come back here and tell me that what you said is not racist and that it wouldn't in fact be a fantastic thing to have

Davey as captain of the oldest sporting club in the world.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
