Also need to consider what we're likely to use in this draft.

No use trading for a 2nd or 3rd round pick if we're only planning to use 2 picks in the draft (& elevate McKenzie).

Of course, Hampson or Jacobs would allow us to jettison PJ, but it's still something that needs to be considered.

I see your point but I'd rather we had it and didn't use it than Carlton having it and using it.

Would Hale be dealt for a 2nd or 3rd round pick (or both)? Remember late trade weeks deals such as Fevola/Akermanis and other names that have been moved for chickens feed due to lack of suitors? If we are not planning to use all of our picks then we could still use our first rounder on talent, and our 4th rounder on another player. Then we pass on the late rounds. Gives north some extra selections to help with their rebuilding. Hale is not that great to be honest. I think they would be happy with those selections in return for a guy who should be much better for his size.

Paul Daffey on the AFL website:

Melbourne (pick 12)

Needs: The Demons, like the Tigers, are well-placed in terms of having all bases covered on their developing list. Like most clubs, they could do with another key forward or key back, but perhaps the most pressing need is a versatile, 190-centimetre type who can shift between half-back, half-forward and the midfield.

Possibilities: Geelong Falcons’ swingman Billie Smedts is just about the most versatile player in the draft, so he’ll be considered. Smedts’s main rival for the title of King Versatile is Sandringham Dragons gun Ben Jacobs, who’s a noted accumulator of the ball. Not all clubs are sold on Jacobs because of a perceived laziness in the past, but he appears to have left those days behind and he’d be a worthy No.12 selection. Not that it means much in terms of footy ability, but Jacobs is doing Year 12 at Jack Watts’s old school, Brighton Grammar.

Looked a little further into Smedts and Jacobs:

Billie Smedts (8 June 1992, 187cm, 77kg, Vic Country): Half-forward and half-back who runs straight. Strong, agile and versatile in the mould of Jarrad Waite, but seldom able to show his best this year because of injury and school commitments. Son of Footscray and St Kilda player Albie Smedts.

Ben Jacobs (9 January 1992, 186cm, 82kg, Vic Metro): Sweeping half-back who will be watched closely now that the school season is over and he can concentrate on playing with Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. Lacks a yard of pace but knows how to find and distribute the ball.

Would love Gaff with pick 12 but absolutely no chance of him slipping that far. I'd also be very happy with one of Smedts, Darling or Jacobs for pick 12 (in that order).

Heard on SEN this morning we are looking at a straight swap with Warnock going to Carlton and us getting Shaun Hampson...

Could be a good option considering gawn, spencer, fitsy, etc are developing...

Wont happen, especially with Jacobs gone! Would be a decent deal though, Hampsn Id have over JAcobs easily.. Good hands, Strong and knows how to get the footy.

does warnock actually have a contract for next year?

According to Deep Throat (twitter) he does.

Warnock for Hampson.... yes please with sugar on top.

Is there an actual list of the current players as to what their current contracts or out of contracts are ?

wasn't there rumours that we were chasing tom lynch from st kilda pretty hard? seems to have gone quite now..

Wrong Tom Lynch,I think you will find- we are looking at another Tom Lynch for the National draft-No: 46

Date of Birth: 31/10/1992

Height: 196cm

Weight: 86kg

Local Club: Sorrento

Demongorm is right in saying it was reported that we were interested in Tom Lynch of St.Kilda (to many a bemused demon fan). We already have the original in Matthew Bate. Poor reporting one feels.

That would be pretty confusing to trade in Tom Lynch from Stkilda and then draft Tom Lynch from Sandringham, then play them both in the same forward line....

Both I think, there was some talk of Lynch from the Saints, but they won't let him go, they need him in that team, as well as Stanley & McEveoy.

I would love to get Stanley though.

We'd ask for Beams, they'd offer Davis.

We would NOT ask for Beams.

Under any circumstances.

Might as well bring in Fevola and Akermanis.

Alex McDonald said on trade Trade Week Radio a little while ago that we might be interested in trading out Kyle Cheney. Really hope they dont find a trade for him though.

I think I might just die if I saw Ricky Petterd in a Collingwood jumper, especially after what happened in Round 2 this year.

Cheney may feel his opportunities at Melbourne will limited which they probably are so understand why he may seek a trade to a club offering regular AFL football.

Pettard will be going nowt except China. Can see why the Pies would want him though as our fleet of marking medium forwards means that the likes of Maxwell, Shaw and O'Brien have to play on a man rather rather than zone off and spread and set up Maggies attacks.

If they can somehow get 3 of GC's first 5 picks I reckon we might start talking.

Could we sneak a 2nd round Pick from either Richmond or Essendon for Maric?

or

Justin Westoff or Jackson Trengove from Port? Both can play from the goal square and ruck temp.

Three way deal.

Walker to Port.

Warnock to Carlton.

Westoff to Melbourne.

The 3 W's!

Exchange of draft picks may also be necessary!

I think Trengove may be too expensive... I would throw his name up though.

And a late pick for Daniel Currie (Sydney)!

Thoughts?

Whats the point in inventing this nonsense?

Fact we should be going hard at : Mitch Clark or Jessie white

If both are not on the trade talk menu, I doubt we will trade at all.

For what it's worth I am very very happy the Hale deal didn't happen.

I just projectile vomited.

Dawes... FML!

Yeah...because Dawes is such an underwhelming prospect...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
