Injury List

Injury list as at 25 February 2010

- Austin Wonaeamirri – Hamstring – 1 week

- Cameron Bruce – Hamstring – 1-2 weeks

- Matthew Bate – Quad – 1-2 weeks

- Colin Garland – Foot – 3 weeks

- Jack Watts – Back – 3 weeks

- Sam Blease – Ankle – 3 weeks

- Paul Johnson – Foot – 6-8 weeks

- John Meesen – Ankle – Indefinite

- Max Gawn – Knee – Indefinite

- Luke Tapscott – Hip – Indefinite

Imo were now out of summer matches & will now start our real practice matches with more senior types to start returning to the team.

We've had a bit of a look @ Scull & Trenners, & also the Gysberts, Fitzpatrick, Strauss, Bail, Cheney, Maric, & McKenzie.

Now I think of these who appear ready, we'll see the 2010 team start to form, with Wonnaemirri, Bruce, & Bate starting their returns.

We all have a good idea now who seems rerady to take the step up to AFL ranks, for the newbies, & who seems likely to take the next step amongst the regulars.

Equally, there will be those who will decline, unable to continue to improve.

It's good that wonna is only a week away, hopefully well see him in the pre season.

Hopefully those first 6 are avaliable for round 1 selection, sad about Johnson though

Looking forward to having Wona back!

He did it before Christmas (over two full months ago), they've taken the necessary precautions. Fingers crossed he hits the ground running with no hiccups for season 2010.

Moloney had his calf strapped at half time and didn't play the rest of the game. I heard him say that it was just really tight and wouldn't release. Usually you can run a tight spot out but being preseason the club did the smart thing. A bit of Massage this week I wouldn't expect him to play this week but expect him back for the final hit out. Same with Sylvia, it wouldn't supprise me if the club rested him this week. Heard Bailey say Aussie is a chance this week but Bruce and Bate more likely the week after.

someone is having a lend of us, because at a function last week watts said that it was his quad that was the problem and he would only be 1-2 weeks away.

I spoke to Jack W at the Future Fund function. After dispelling any rumours of 'shaggers back' he went on to say that the two problems (quad/back) are/may well be related but it did stem from his quad. He said that after the initial quad strain had cleared up he kept feeling it, so kept telling the docs that his quad was still sore, however they couldnt find anything on the scans, then his back got inflamed and they did further scans and found the quad still had issues so rehabbed that. He was very adamant that the injury was/had cleared up and shouldnt give further issues. CC indeed said that Jack would have played NAB Cup Rd 1 if it was Rd 1 of Home and away.

As an aside Jack seemed in very good humour, he finds it amusing that Nik Nat gets so many comparisons to him when Jack isnt even on the park. But he is certain he can make an impact when he gets out there and is longing to have people reconsidering their thoughts. I asked him how he felt re not full training and was he losing ground fitness/size wise, he seemed to think that his reduced training + rehab was harder work and building him up more than just training would

Seeing Jack a few times last year in person and then again last week, he is certainly getting larger. Forced eating is how he described it. I tried to give him Harcourt's Meat tray but he was already into it.

Also spoke at length to Jack Grimes who has to be one of the most stand up blokes ive met. Although he speaks better than he did a year ago, he has zero attitude or arrogance. Out of interest he swears he isnt worth 508k on supercoach, though im not so sure.

That's news to me. I was only aware of him doing it once just before Christmas ? He started back jogging when training resumed in Jan. Someone will confirm either way.

Anyway he's not far away from taking the field.

I would love to see Wonna play most of the season, he was such an excitement machine :)

Unfortunate about Luke, sucks having our draft picks injured. Blease & Strauss last year, now Gawn & Tappscott.. Now thats unlucky..

no problems at all. I am lucky enough to have sampled some of the pork tonight!

Would also strongly recommend the MFC future fund to anyone who isn't a member.

Well run last year by Sima and Jacko, I'm sure the new boys will do well.

Great opportunity to get some face time with the boys, for some reason a lot of people seem shy to do so.

Just some notes on a few of the injured players from last night's Mates of Melbourne function was held at the Kooyong Tennis Club with some of our injured players in attendance. They were all briefly interviewed by Dean Bailey and here's the gist of what was said:

Jack Watts – no longer worried by his back strain and is gradually overcoming the problem with his quad. Hopes to be back in a week or two. (He should be more worried by his haircut - it's a shocker!)

Colin Garland – has been in pretty much full training for a month and expects to start playing the weekend after next in a Casey practice match.

John Meesen - the foot injury is taking a while to heal and he has had some setbacks. Recently, he underwent an operation on his ankle and some "gunk" was removed. His surgeon is very confident that the op was successful but there’s no specific time frame for his return.

Max Gawn – had a knee reconstruction after damaging his ACL in round 5 of the TAC Cup but still won the Dragons’ goal kicking. He’s back running but it will still be a while before he’s back.

Sam Blease – had a broken ankle as a result of a schoolyard accident, has resumed training and is a couple of weeks away from playing.

Thanks for update WJ--By what you have stated the two talls-Meeson & Gawn are the major concerns-Gawn should be ready in about 10 weeks and poor John who knows. Feel very sorry for him. I sincerely hope he can get onto the park by mid year and shows us that he is worthwhile continuing. Any word on PJ,although we know he has a foot injury and is expected back in 5 weeks? And young Luke Tapscott and his recovery from hip surgery.Notification, if any would be very much appreciated.

All great news. Injury list is looking good.

Gawn was a known quantity, he was always going to be a mid-season return from well before we drafted him and like all kids his size won't be a factor for 2-3 years at least anyway.

Meesen is irrelevant, he's probably 4th in the pecking order on our rookie list and would've been delisted if not for contract. He was put in the same basket as Newton for good reason.

If we've got Garland, Blease & Watts all playing at Casey by or before Rnd 1 we're looking good.

Disagree with your comments regarding Meesen. I was convinced he was a spud until the games he did play for us last year which were pretty solid and if repeated for the rest of the season would have him as a reasonable prospect to make it as an AFL ruckman. By reasonable I mean far from certain but in with a chance - similar to a Jamar 3 years ago, every bit as much a chance as PJ, Martin, Spencer or Gawn. I think his injury (stress fracture in a big ruckman) is the reason for his rookie status. I'm not yet ready to write him off, and due to the nature of our ruck stocks I'm hoping he can recover from his injury. If Jamar has a solid year and Gawn can prove anything at all I think possibly 2 of PJ/Martin/Spencer/Meesen will be let go, but I'm not willing to vote which ones.

Also feel free to disagree but I don't think Garland, Blease or Watts could go straight from a Casey practice match to the round 1 side. But they will certainly add to the talent looming on anyone who dared to under perform in round 1 for us!

Agree to disagree on Meesen.

I wasn't suggesting any of Garland, Blease or Watts would be ready for AFL Rnd 1. I consider it to be a fantastic result for those players to be playing for Casey by Rnd 1.

Tend to agree with you on Meesen. I saw him in that practice match against the Swans at Princess Park prior to the '09 season and he was shocking

yet when he did play at senior level he was reasonably good (at least good enough to persevere with).

Let him get over his injury and see if he can get back on track.

Remember, many on this forum wanted to see the back of Jamar a couple of years ago: now without him - heaven help us!!!

(And IMHO we should never have traded Jolly)

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
