Melbourne Demons woo Barack Obama

If Jimmy can pull this off he will go down in history as one of the most ambitious club presidents in VFL/AFL history. Obama is a CRAZY hoops fan, and loves to get involved with sport.

I would love to see this happen, it may raise MFC awareness in the worlds richest sporting market (although they have no f&^king idea what AFL is other than their old american football league before the NFL merger)

I really want this to happen. Jimmy Stynes is a dead set legend, both on and off the field!!!

I've always wondered how tangible the effects are of these things. You grab a celeb, sick 'em in a jumper, and get a photo op and a 5 minute warm fuzzy feeling, but do kids really look at the TV and say "Oh wow! Obama follows the Demons and now so do I"?

I'm not saying we shouldn't do it but I'm just not sure that it will make any difference.

Awesome if Jimma pulls it iff. Also typical of Brumby using his position to help out the Filth at all times.

You can't really blame him. If he wants to showcase the game he'll want a fixture with a huge crowd. Two top four teams with rabid fans will make a great spectacle. Our game will draw half the crowd and it's not likely to be a great show with the Hawks tipped to be contenders this year and us fighting to get out of the bottom four.

Geez your a great optimist today!!

Our game could easily draw as many as the Filth & the Dogs.

Name of the city-Melbourne. Jump on Obama i think a red and Blue scarf would look cherry ripe hanging around your neck.

Go for it Jimma-Get the Big man!!

I wouldn't say its necessarily to have that effect - its about pure media exposure and from that we will end up with a fair percentage deciding they like our style and the way we play and coming on board.

Conduct ourselves with integrity and put an attractive brand out there and with exposure the memberships will follow

If Obama is coming to the game, you can probably add 10,000 to the crowd, more again if it's (hopefully) his only public appearance in Melbourne/Victoria. Given Hawthorn has 50k members, I reckon we'd want 45,000+ without Barack... hence 60,000+ would be very achievable IMO.

Agree with the scarf comment, Obama seems to always be wearing either a red or a blue tie.

Would also be stoked from the point of view that Brumby (f-wit) is trying to get him to the Pies match... awesome.

And then, imagine if we won! The publicity would be huge, we'd be looking at 35,000 members... jizz. Too bad we're playing Hawthorn.

All in all, not sure which part of it is most exciting.

Go Dees. Go Jimma.

Hear what your saying 100%, but having Sachin Tendulker with the guernsey a few years back might of got a few indians on board, he is pretty much a God over there

Anyway its worth doing just to pissoff Eddie & the Filth :)

Be great to get it just so we can rub it in the face of Pies fans! It would be really positive press for the club, but having said that it wouldn't be the worse loss of the year if he didn't come to our match!

You get Barrack Obama to Australia, you don't want his lasting impression of the country being that of feral Collingwood supporters.

At least at our game he'll be surrounded by civilized, intellectual human beings possessing all of their teeth. Plus if he's going to visit our great city, and view our great game, it is only fitting that he comes to watch the Melbourne Football Club, inventor of Australian Rules Football.

 Couldn't agree more.

If he went to Brumby's game (Collingwood's), the first thing on President Obama's agenda when sitting down with "I eat my own ear wax Rudd" will be Australia's requirement for more trips to the dentist !

Doubt he'll put on MFC scarf or any other club's scarf.

It'll be a great coup to get him there but we have to pitch it right. it needs a hook. The youth theme is a nice pitch but what's the hook. intiative to help mebourne's city youth, an initiative to use our youth to help melbourne's violence problem.

Jimma's a good story for Obama to associate himself with too, a man fighting cancer but still on the front lines fighting for his beloved club.

It can be done.

If we show some form in the preseason games and the Hawks keep coming then I'd expect close to 60,000 without Obama, anything less would be a poor result.

With my tongue planted firmly in cheek I wonder if Obama would really want to be associated with a team called the Demons. After all the looney right over there is happy to label him a terrorist or Muslim or commie, so why not a Devil worshipper. Food for thought maybe.

Given that there can't be a crowd bigger than 55,000 at Etihad, I assume you feel our game will attract about 27,000? Now that's pessimism.

I would have thought that, with our renewed optimism, and with Hawthorn's pre-season form plus their 'revenge for 2009' attitude to this season, coupled with the fact that it's at the MCG, and that Melbourne and Hawthorn together account for over 40% of all MCC members, I would have thought that 50,000 would be a reasonable estimate. Add word of Obama to that and there could be another 10,000.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
