Warnock's future

One would hope that when supporters look back at Warnock's preformance against Lloyd, in five years time, we see it as a great learning experience. He made errors, showed inexperience and struggled to read the game sometimes but he never looked beaten and showed resilience. He tried and put in his best effort in every contest. i hope that in five years or less, he gets his reward for his persistence.

i've always seen warnock as the next nathan carroll... comes into the side off the rookie list, much older than other rookie players... will be serviceable but nothing more... the best thing he may do for the MFC is lure his brother to the club...

Gee let's bag a bloke that ND had no faith in for a few years, yet when given a chance and has improved over the season gets beaten today and you want to put the boots in him, things will only get better with teaching by DB and CO.

I agree with that. Lloyd got some cheapies, such as Sylvia's early Christmas present, and had a couple of lace-out passes delivered to his left breast, but I thought that when Warnock actually got to grips with Lloyd, he was able to do an admirable job. I can't think of a time when he got out-wrestled, even though Lloyd's size would seem to suggest there should have been many.

Also, Lloyd was in vintage form with the boot. If Warnock can push his man out to where he had Lloyd kicking from on a number of occasions today, I won't be overly concerned about said opponent kicking too many.

Exactly! There arnt many players out there that can score from that far out time and time again. Take away the cheapies and Lloyds day wasnt overly special - not to discredit his performance though.

perhaps the part about bringing his brother to the club is the best thing he'll do was harsh, i'll admit that...

but i stand by the remainder of my comments... i think eventually Chip Frawley will overtake him, and warnock won't be a part of our backlnie when we make a real tilt for a flag... in the meantime he'll be serviceable at full back and do a solid job...

When Warnock first played at Sandringham, it was as a full forward. Given our problems up there atm, why not try him up there again for the rest of the year and bring Frawley and or Carroll into defence for the rest of the eyar?

i didn't realise he'd played forward before...

it's worth a try, although to be honest I think Bailey is going to play players in the positions they will play long term... and we still need him down back at the moment... i think he'll be more inclined to play Garland forward than Warnock...

My gut feeling is that over the next few years Warnock will kind of fill the role of Carrol & Holland have held for the last few. Should get at least a dozen games each year for half a decade, with some full years like 08. By then he'll be about 30 and can retire pretty satisfied.

I thought the backline were pretty good at getting the ball out yesterday. Sure, we stuffed up a few times, through the likes of Bell, but i thought we held up rather well (even though we conceded 20+ goals). He who must not be named had a rare day out. I'm just glad that we tried throughout the entire match (although it would've been nice to beat the scum and shut their whinging fans up).

Warnock is a strong defender... he is much better than Nicho or Shanahan or carrol or any other dud fullback we'v had over the last 10 yrs!!!

HOWEVER, in a perfect world, i wouldn't have him as our future fullback.

If players develop as i hope they will (which is certainly NO guerentee) my starting key defenders would be S.Martin and J.Frawley, with C.Garland and J.Rivers playing across half-back.

Nonetheless, if any of those 4 don't make it- (J.Frawley and Martin mightnt develop as hoped and J.Rivers might not get onto the park)- then bring on WARNOCK!

I thought harry high pants had at least 3 opponents. Stef first off, then Col then, Warnock to finish. Our defence in general got a bit of a touch up today, first time in awhile but one game does not make a winter.

Our lack of targets up forward really hurt us today, the number of times we moved the ball out of the back half into the midfield quickly was a good sign. We were then held up going into the forward line on numerous occasions, we would then bomb it long or to a contest, turn over.

Good signs though from such a young team.

Perspective Lads!!! Lloyd would be in the top 10 FF's of all time. He had a day out and even SOS at his best would have struggled.

par for the course from a few on this site, Warnock is going to be a good serviceable backman for another 5-6 years and every team needs one to take 2-3rd forward.

Lloyd was in the zone yesterday, there are times when players can just do no wrong and that was one of those days. FFS he took a MOTY contender dead in front, so we can knock that one off as a result of poor defense, he kicked 2-3 from outside 50 so it's not like all his shots we easy.

He tried to push him wide and far, but Llyod kept kicking them! He will learn from this, and if he doesn't then he is an idiot!

I thought Warnock only moved onto Lloyd after he'd kicked two - it looked like Martin was on him initially. I think Lloyd took a mark in or around the 50 when opposed to Garland, although I can't remember if this resulted in a shot.

Lloyd was also given a goal by Sylvia, and plucked one off the back of a pack in the square that would have been tough for anyone to stop...let alone the MOTY grab and goal.

As others have mentioned, we're happy to talk about how great our forwards were when they have a good day, but when opposition forwards have a great day it's the fault of our defenders.

When a player has a day like Lloyd had, you can't really blame his defender. No one here goes on about Franklin's opponents when he kicks 8, yet when Lloyd does it, it must be our fault.

I agree with that. From where I was sitting it didn't look as if he did a lot wrong. It's easy to forget that Lloyd is a champion of the game, and for mine he was completely unstoppable on the day.

Lloyd seemed to keep his feet alot, didn't see any notable diving on Saturday. Which has been his trade mark.

I dunno if even Scarlett could have restricted Lloyd's output. Some of his goals weren't Wanock's fault (e.g. Sylvia kicking across goal, MOTY grab) plus most of the others came because of our turnovers that brought the ball into our defence quickly.

Just watched a replay on a mates Foxtel IQ, you're spot on Rogue.

Lloyd kicked the 1st two goals of the game on Martin, before Warnock was shifted to him. Lloyd then took a good mark on the lead and converted opposed to Garland, whilst Warnock was having a spell on the bench.

After that i'm pretty sure Lloyd's last 5 goals were on Warnock- but as u said, gifted 2 goals, and MOTY for another one.

So in essence, Matty Warnock didn't really have a that bad a day, only really conceding 2 'stoppable' goals on Lloyd in unstoppable form. And even those stoppable ones were hardly his fault.

I thought he was the best option we had for Lloyd and easily performed best out of the 3 we had tried, and will only learn and get better for the experience.
