I have come to the belief Caroline has a long lunch before Football classified.

I don't always agree with her but I respect her enormously for never backing down despite being constantly belittled by her male colleagues, who are mostly idiots.

I'm not a fan either way but is she belittled because she is a woman or becuase of what she writes....... the times I've seen her "attacked" it has been for what she has written. All journo's are attacked at some point, she is still unafraid of broaching hard topics and going with sources even when previous stories have turned out to be untrue or not as she has written them. You have to give her credit for plugging away.

She's one of the few intelligent football writers and because of this she attracts the ire of her less intelligent male peers. Hutchinson being an absolute prime example. He knows she holds more kudos as a journalist because whilst he's sniffing around the gutters of "celebrity footballers" she's writing articles that provoke thought and interest in the football world.

That is not because she is a woman though RI, it is beacuse he is a [email protected]

She is the most attacked journalist in her field, especially amongst fellow journalists.

IMO that has something to do with her gender, as she's certainly one of the better football writers out there.

Notice how nobody attacks Sam Lane, and that's probably because she writes crap fluff pieces and disappears nicely into the background. She does what women in sports journalism are expected to do. Caro doesn't, and I respect her enormously for that.

I would see her being the most attacked because of what she writes not becuase of her gender. She has always been unafraid of writting what she thinks is the truth at the time on any story. Thus she is attacked by people associated with the stories and attacked by other journo's jealous of her position as head football writer for the age.

And yes I agree Lane doesn't write the same articles so why would she be attacked? She is of the same gender and is not attacked is she? It is because of what they write.

I will add one thing that i find difficult with all journo's is there lack of accountability if they are wrong in a story, if they are getit wrong they never admit the mistake and never retract it.

The point I was making with Sam Lane is that female football journalists are only accepted into the boys' club if they fade into the background.

Many male journalists write controversial stories but none are attacked the way she is. So yes, she gets talked about because she is so well recognised and her stories provoke thought, but the attacks IMO come from the fact she's a woman stepping over the line in a men's world.

She is best in the business in my opinion 45hotgod.

Never pretends to be a match day writer. writes and speaks well and holds herself tremendously well when continually attacked by those that disagree with her.

As for Footy Classified, I enjoy it. mostly because I think Lyon and Caro are two of the best.

As for the ingrained chauvinism present in the AFL fraternity, I’ll leave that one alone for now.

Ditto 'kieranbj' & 45hotgod, She is best in the business in my opinion 45hotgod.**********

Your right 'Jaded', allthough I think she's attacked because she shames the other journo's lack of 'balls' in taking on the issues she deems important to footy, so therefore the hutchisons of this world attack her for "putting her head up", because he wishes he had the respect she has.

If she was male, she would be lauded for every piece she writes, would probably commentate the game, and would not be belittled over trivial matters like she is currently.

Indeed it seems most of us agree

Havent found a Journo yet that admits to making incorrect statements

Never been a fan of speculation and inuendo style journalism

when asked to substantiate their story they use the * cant reveal my sources line* as a defence to proving the story

Are all Journo,s like this ? Nope just the successful ones

There is a saying *Never let the truth get in the way of a good story*

What you need to remember is that the MEDIA are a very important component of Football

It'd be a photo between Emma Quayle and Caroline Wilson for best female journo. Sam Lane pulled up sore and didn't finish.

Emma's strength is her ability to cover more than one sport with engagement and perception. Check her reports from the Windies cricket.

Caro's strength is her ability to focus on one sport with an investigative mind and great connections.

Both excellent journos.

Yet again, she is the only one on this show with any talent/insight, and then gets abused for anything she comes up with. (Archer, saying she would have interviewed Polak if she was in the same situation, yet saying nothing to Hutchy who works at the paper who actually DID it)

Blokey culture at it's worst.

Tall poppy syndrome, drives me crazy

Archer... 5mins as some sort of journo and he knows it all?? Good player...needs to learn a lot about the other side of the fence me thinks !!

He just comes across as an illiterate sniper

In all reality hes the token participant..recent player etc. Very lightweight in terms of contributions..its all fed to him. There are better observers and communicators around

While it was the Sun, I didn't think it was Hutchy who nabbed the interview. Didn't think Wilson copped too much flak tonight, either.

I do agree that Archer's poor on that show, though. He was better than last time I saw it, but that's not saying much. His attempt at a soapbox moment re: Firrito's gesture was cringe-worthy.

In all honesty it too is a semi lightweight show pretending to be a 'heavy'.. too much pretence for sure. Its just good value for Melbourne with Garry..I accept it at that :)

The best bit is invariably the hotseat..but al too often the real questions go begging.. Its TV....fluff !!

Hey, it's better than other late-night television. It's probably better than On the Couch too. In my opinion, it's the best football program there is. The Footy Show might be better, but it's disqualified on account of it's reluctance to discuss anything even remotely football related. Not to mention the puke-worthy "jokes" of Trevor "Good on Toast" Marmalade.

The Footy Show is all about entertainment.. just uses footy as the medium.. A bit tiresome after a few seasons..Just my view.

I dont get cable so seldom see OTC....I consider that a win !! lol

All Im saying..is there really isnt much of any show that really lives up to the mantle of "Fair Dinkum Footy News" FC comes close on occasions..but its still a medium for cross promotion of other shows..and a vehcile for Hutchy and Gaz etc.

Occasionally it gets interesting when Carro has a go.. Archer is a waste of a chair on that show. Gaz is the epitome of a diplomat..id rather see him let loose instead of smoothing the others etc.

I concur..better than most probably..still not an A from me though, struggles to get a B most weeks..only my view again

He struggled big time with regard to Firrito's gesture. Archer looks so uncomfortable and has little input for the show. A comment here or there and most of the time is having a dig at Hutchy or Caro. Waste of space on Footy Classified.

Not saying it was Hutchy who "got" the inteview, but why would Archer criticize Caro, saying she would do the same thing, when Hutchy sat next to him and worked for the offending journo's paper and is clearly closer to the source.

I thought it was fair enough. Archer didn't defend the conduct of the Sun (pretty sure he said it was poor/he wouldn't do it or something), simply said that Wilson would have done the same.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
