Hi guys. My first post on here. Not sure if related to this topic, has anyone heard that Brayshaw has had another concussion??

He got a hit before half time and was able to walk off the ground.

Was thinking about this last night but i have a feeling that our Medical staff just bit the bullet and immediately put Gus in cotton wool. Even if he did pass the concussion test i think because of his history they wanted to be extra cautious.

I think the match committee were so bullish on JKH's preseason that they probably said, despite your broken arm, we won't forget your form and we'll find a place when you're back. Interesting though, I thought he was pretty average in all the JLT games he played. Think he only kicked one goal. Anyway, if he doesn't perform at AFL level this time around, just shelve him back to Casey never to return.

In regards to Pedo being a chop out in the ruck instead of Watts, just cast your mind back to the Hawks game where he played yet didn't spend any time in the ruck. The coaches love Watts' follow up work and his decision making in the middle. It's unfortunate though, as I'd love to see Watts kick a bag but it ain't going to happen with limited time up forward.

Kent: 2 tackles in 2 games, plus inaccurate in front of goal.

I was surprised when I saw him omitted, but on that basis I get it.

Versus Garlett 11 and ANB 15 in the same period. Pretty obvious to me. Smith comes in after 10 tackles as a tall forward. JKH whilst not to the same level 4 tackles in the VFL last week but has his work rate praised by Plapp. I can start to see a theme there. I suspect Hibberd will take a while to settle and feel part of the team but anyone who think he is not a massive asset to our side has not watched much of him. Wife is a Bombers supporter so have watched them a lot and whilst his 2015 was only good his 2014 and 2013 were stellar. I think he was second over that period to Heath Shaw for intercept marks and was extremely high up for metres gained. Plays aggressive both with and without the ball. Will be interesting when he gets settled and Lewis returns what position Vince takes.

Demonland where the Match Committee are proven wrong before the event based on Bugg's VFL performance. However Kent's underwhelming VFL performance still has Demonlanders questioning the Match Committees decision to omit him.

Kent was poor last night. Was yesterday that i realised he has had a total of 2 tackles in the games he's played this year. Thats pretty poor effort.

The JKH selection I'm still a bit miffed. He drifted right out of the game last week. If we were going to go for a small i thought kennedy would have been the obvious choice. 27 disposals and 4 tackles is pretty decent numbers.

The JKH selection is an interesting one.  I think Ben Kennedy has been pretty solid down at Casey and was probably around the mark for a run as well.  However, he must be working on a variety of things as well as he hasn't been named on the extended bench or as an emergency for the first 5 rounds of the year.  Clearly that means he's coming from some way back, while they feel that JKH has been doing the things that Goodwin wants from his players.  That's the only reason I can think of anyway.  I would assume that Kennedy gets his chance in the coming weeks if he keeps up some good form.

A critical issue has arisen that is germane to this thread given it is a match preview thread. Proof, if we needed it, that the there is conspiracy against the dees.

All I can think of is that he must be doing something right, regardless of how Goodwin rates him.  I'd love to know the stats of the players he is playing on during a game.  Perhaps, defensively, he has been terrific, even if he hasn't given us a whole lot going the other way yet.

Exactly. Goodwin's not in the business of simply gifting games to his 'mates'.

It's amusing that some believe that Goodwin WOULD gift games to guys like Melksham because he coached them at Essendon.

I understand that some are narrow minded and can't get past the fact that we have a few Bombers on our list, but common sense has to prevail in this case.  Melksham is getting a game because the FD believe he is doing most things right.  Otherwise he would have played for Casey last night.

Also perhaps it's more structural, wanting to move Salem up the ground or into the mids, and there's no like-for-like half-back replacement (Wagner injured, White coming back from injury). Lewis comes back next week as well, so that's the spot Melksham is keeping warm.

Still think Melksham will turn out fine, but a year off/away from footy isn't nothing.

Maybe he will, but right now he's giving us absolute donuts in the side. I don't believe he is the best fit option for that spot in the side right now.

Agreed he might be an okay midfield rotation or half forward but half back doesn't suit him

It was clear all including the coaches thought Melksham was poor last week being they hid him forward in the last quarter. Unlike others though I feel he was good the week before and serviceable the weeks prior. No small forward has taken him to the cleaners and he kicks aggressiveIy, long and flat, granted last week he had a mare. Based on that I would have dropped him this week if we were not playing a team with a small fast forward line so can understand why they are persevering.

Emergencies Anthony Miles and Simon Lloyd did not play in the VFL game against Sandringham. Common to hold one player over, not two. Could we see a late change to the Tigers team, maybe Dusty is still struggling with his groin.

I would rather Martin played. He won't be fit and MFC players should exploit that.

Make the bastard run and run...

They are probably giving Dusty right up until game time to prove his fitness.  They'll be holding one player for him and another in case something else goes wrong.

Not sure if I want him to play or not.  I can just see him playing half fit but spending the game forward where he kicks 5 goals.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
