We've apparently very much cooled on Armstrong after interviews. Unlikely to take him now. Jagga still the favourite with Lalor and Langford also around the mark in terms of who the club likes. Reid and Tauru also being considered. Still a chance Melbourne split pick 9, but I get the impression it depends who is left on the board on the night. This is all rumour as it stands, and these things can change rapidly as it is, so if someone like goodwindees or DannyZ post otherwise then I would rely on their information more.15 points

Getting out of the top 10 for a pick 29 or 30? We gave up ND28 and a whole lot more to get this effing pick. Just trust your judgement and get a quality kid in with 9 and be done with it.7 points

Drafting either would be a huge win and would set us up for the next decade But I think Jagga would compliment our current midfield the best out of all the top prospects He’s an accumulator and is smart and clean with his possessions, and some of his movement in traffic is mouthwatering I’ve said before that while he may not be as good as Daicos or Sheezel (although he could be), I see him being able to come straight in and make an impact in that qtr back type role off the back of stoppages, winning the ball and helping with transition and ball movement7 points

We'd split it if the player(s) we like would be available at the pick we're trading for and acquire the freebie on top. It's not rocket science. We're not doing a trade for the sake of it.6 points

For those that don't know much about Bassett before he started coaching at AFL level. After a very solid AFL career as a full back/Back Pocket he took over the head coaching position at Norwood in the SANFL. Norwood had been on the bottom of the ladder for the previous 5-6 years and he took them to a threepeat, not to mention after each year he lost min 4 of his best players to the AFL. (Imagine losing Viney, Langdon, Kossie and Jackson after 2021) Not only did he turn the Norwood football club around, he turned a bunch of guys into AFL standard footballers. A lot of them were mature ago too not just kids with talent.6 points

Having watched our super hero play indomitable footy year after year it was very hard to watch Clayton this year, unfit injured constant headlines and derision from the media pack. So looking forward to seeing Clayton Clarry Oliver back to his peak fitness and enjoying his footy surrounded by a group of energetic enthusiastic youngsters following in his footsteps. I think when you get a GUN pick who seems to perhaps be even better than you hoped like the Duke it’s always harder to rate another player based on a low key first 10/15games. What I do think is Melb were very pleased with the Kolt’s season as he improved as the year wore on. As he was 18 years for a long part of the year we should be positive about his start and believe that he will make great strides in 2025. His room for upside is perhaps greater but let’s judge him separately not vs Caleb who yo be fair looks like an absolute superstar the way he adapted and showed his class and style. Purists that are comparing him to the late great Robbie Flower who is one of our top 10/15 greats are IMO not far wrong. So smooth and fast plus tougher than many opponents realise. So much so I would like Goody to change Windsor to the centre from the start of the season to get the extra benefit of his direct and straight ahead style that could also net him a handy 15/20 goals for our total even in only his second year. Can’t wait for all our youngsters to improve and surprise the experts in our bounce back up the ladder.4 points

It's not about safety, it's the fact that our midfield depth is a bigger need then forward. After Rivers who is 24 we have zero up and coming midfield talent coming through. Petracca, Oliver, Viney are all about to hit their 30's and then there is a significant drop. Armstrong's no different to Weideman in his draft year. Too many double grab marks or dropped marks that forwards should eat up, 2nd efforts non existent and lackadaisical in his approach. Riak Andrew, a rookie list propsect completely shut him down in a Coates game at the back end of the year and his poor body language and laziness was on show for everyone to see. Barely put up a fight.4 points

Yes (can't rule out recency bias here though). Jagga has Parish for agility and sheer accumulation (can't think of a more prolific ball winner in CTL/TAC Cup), probably slightly better at winning the ball in contest at the same age too. Parish was probably a better 'metres gained' player for more of his draft year.3 points

Your scenario is the exact reason why I'm questioning the idea of splitting pick 9. I'll concede that moving up from pick 28 would have been difficult. But essentially we are trading our future 1st and a raft of 3rd round picks for pick 13 or 14. That's a terrible trade. I've seen these sort of deals done on NBA Draft Night, and more often than not, they end up badly for the team that gets too cute.3 points

I think Disco - with more strength and confidence gained during the offseason - could well end up becoming our most improved player next season.3 points

We also moved up knowing there maybe be multiple options available to us. We obviously would be very happy to use that pick straight up, but also know some clubs may be desperate for a player and overpay.3 points

Be interesting to see where he ends up in 3-4 years. Is he going to become a midfielder, or is he more likely a forward with glimpses on the ball - like we use Koz now? Looking forward to seeing who he trains with over the preseason as a possible indicator.3 points

If we split our pick 9 for 15 and 16, it gets us two late first rounders... That's why we'd do it. Say, Hotton and Hynes.3 points

The first round draft pick at #13 from twelve months ago the strongly built medium forward has had an impressive introduction to AFL football and is expected to spend more midfield moments as his career progresses. Lack of preparation after a problematic preseason prevented Oliver from reaching the high standards set before last year’s hamstring woes. He carried injury right through the back half of the season and was controversially involved in a potential move during the trade period that was ultimately shut down by the club. The 3rd rounders we gave up were 40, 54 and 65. 65 is just about useless. 54 and especially 40 have some value in this draft but we’ve rarely prioritised late picks and there must be confidence in filling out the list with our current rookies and cat B players. I don’t think that’s a hefty price to get in to the first round. We added 28 to make sure we pick 9 but I’d like to recoup that. The NBA draft always drops away quickly, it’s not a draft to get cute with. This years draft by all reports has a top 20 which corresponds to the talent generally available in the top 7-10 or so of a normal draft. I wouldn’t risk a trade back if it’s more than a 1% risk but they had the guts to do it for Kossie. We’ll see if it occurs again.2 points

To me Disco is a bit of a wild card plays back and seemingly forward equally well loved his game against Gold Coast, showed some flair and accuracy he certainly surprised Petty and The Suns backs. Hope he keeps on improving he has a strongish body that could take him far.2 points

I have very high hopes for Koltyn Tholstrup he still has a way to go and is more a fwd/mid but I expect that he will roll into the midfield more as he builds his body and engine.2 points

Port - 13, 29 Freo - 14, 30 Less likely West Coast - 12 and 26 for something back in a 3 team deal, especially if they can trade in another future first GWS - 15, 16 (unlikely but possible) 28 would’ve been very very hard to move up inside 20 yet alone inside 15 with late picks in the 40+ range. You’re talking about multiple trade up moves when teams generally only move back for draft points. Richmond had a lock on those deals with Brisbane and Gold Coast. And just because a player is rated late first doesn’t mean they’ll be available if you have 18, 19, 20. We moved up to get a guy we rate as a high quality player. If we can do that at 13 rather than 9 so be it. We made this exact move for Kossie in 2019. It’s not that different to expect we’d do it again.2 points

You haven't answered my question. What high end picks do you seriously think a club will give up for pick 9? We acquired pick 9 assuming there'd be elite talent in the top 10. If we liked players that are projected to go late in the 1st round, we had pick 28 which we could have upgraded with the bunch of 3rd rounders that we gave away.2 points

I'd prefer Lindsay @ 9 if we're going another mid. Would like some pace to offset Langfords lack of pure break-away speed..2 points

Unsurprising to me. The first season of AFLW was 7.5 years ago. The players getting drafted this year are probably the first to have a pathway open to them from age 10 or 11. I reckon over the next 5 years the quality of draftees is going to ramp significantly as we not only have a larger pool of girls who have played football their entire junior career, but we'll also have more girls coming from "elite" junior pathways and representative sides, where the talent pathways have identified the best players, and they've had the chance to improve by playing in those elite junior competitions.2 points

Inaccuracies of ruckman names aside, your suggestion we wait and hope another year to replace Max concerns me. Max turns 33yo next month. Ruckman, traditionally need time. Will Verall is a fair way off atm and is 'only' 199cm anyway. I recommend you look at vision of Alex Dodson in the u18 Championships. He is a very mobile, high possession, 203cn ruckman. He really only concentrated on football this year, being a top level basketballer. He is the best teen ruck prospect I've seen in years. The great depth of talent this year is the only reason he's not being touted top 10. Even then, I think he will get picked higher than many predict. If we can't manage a pick split, I would still seriously consider him at 9, which will end up at 11 or 12 anyway.2 points

I'm writing 2024 off completely, it was a [censored] year and was all over the place. I think everyone has a bad year and we had a collective one, things will turn around next year for Clayton and the club. We have to get on top of any negative press as soon as it hits and not just let it fester away as we did.2 points

Kalani is only 200cm at the moment, so he's at the shorter end of today's rucks (see below for a quick reference from ChatGPT). At some point we will need a legitimate replacement for Gawn. Unfortunately most of the potential options don't have the same ability to get around the ground like Gawn does. If we see a good young bloke next year though I say we pounce. Club First Ruckman Height Adelaide Crows Reilly O'Brien 201 cm Brisbane Lions Oscar McInerney 204 cm Carlton Blues Marc Pittonet 202 cm Collingwood Magpies Darcy Cameron 204 cm Essendon Bombers Sam Draper 205 cm Fremantle Dockers Sean Darcy 203 cm Geelong Cats Rhys Stanley 200 cm Gold Coast Suns Jarrod Witts 209 cm GWS Giants Kieren Briggs 201 cm Hawthorn Hawks Ned Reeves 211 cm Melbourne Demons Max Gawn 208 cm North Melbourne Kangaroos Tristan Xerri 201 cm Port Adelaide Power Scott Lycett 203 cm Richmond Tigers Ivan Soldo 204 cm St Kilda Saints Rowan Marshall 201 cm Sydney Swans Tom Hickey 201 cm West Coast Eagles Nic Naitanui 201 cm Western Bulldogs Tim English 208 cm2 points

Adelaide semi-final was a great match to watch but, for mine, can't go past the Merger-Match final Round 1996 against Hawthorn. Hawthorn needs to win to make the finals. Both sets of fans turn up for possibly the last time. Dunstall kicks 100. Neitz almost dragging the Dees across the line. 1 point margin. Leaving The G for what many believed was the last time. This game used to make the media's lists of greatest games, but seems to have dropped of the radar in recent years.2 points

Clearly a negative year, but he still played at least 5 Clayton Oliver quality games against the likes of the Dogs (MCG), Geelong, Brisbane (GABBA), Essendon and GWS. You'd imagine he'll increase that to at least 12-14 quality games next season if he has a full pre season. Add that to a (hopefully) full season from Trac and that's surely some automatic improvement right there. Was understood to be injured at the time, but he was a complete liability in this last game against Port, to the point where he needed to be subbed off as he was hurting us on the field. Let's hope those days are behind him.2 points

I think he went on to coach a team dwindling away at the bottom for 50 years that almost megered into irrelevance and got accused of underacheiving because the list he helped click were after that percieved to be too talented not to win 3 in a row2 points
