McVee played on Higgins most of the time. When Higgins was a high half-forward he followed him and beat him one on one, and also did the zoning where he covered two players (competed well when he had to go the ball), he also followed Higgins around the goal square area. Had great acceleration, stepped, shimmied, ran at good angles, competed in the air and hit targets that got the ball moving. He also pressed high up to just outside the forward 50 arc.10 points

Enjoyed the commentator talking about the Saints needing to find a way past Tom Petty as the spare man down back.9 points

Jordon could play half back, effectively replacing Salem. JJ has the discipline and defensive nous. And in almost all his games he essentially played a half back role. He's a terrific footballer. Super high footy iq and does whatever job the coaches ask him to do..You can see why the coaches love him.9 points

100% agree on all three. It looks like Mcvee has Salem's spot for now. Nice kicking action and finds targets. The team really got around him early when he hit up a forward with a sweet hit that set up a [censored] on goal. Hunter's kicking inside 50 is exactly what we need. In addition to setting up scores, he creates a problem for oppos trying to bypass Langdon. I love that both have shaved heads. I think a key factior in how much Grundy improves us will be how well he and maxy combine. It might take the first handful of games to build their chemistry. If/when they click they will be a formidable combo given their size, ruck craft and incredible fitness. That combo is an improvement on maxy and Jackson. So that's a win right there.8 points

Hunter prolific McVee classy and clean Rivers busy - like the midfield move Bowey excellent marking/bodywork for a player of his size Grundy a bit underwhelming8 points

Disappointed that Seston hasn't kicked at least 16 goals yet.7 points

Huuter coped a hit to his leg, late in that last quarter. Lever walked onto the ground at the end, minus a boot. I liked Rivers game, was even organising the backline structure, and often first to support/encourage his mates. Mcvee looks at home.7 points

McVee has been very impressive. I think he’ll play at lot of footy at half back this season.7 points

I have have seen enough to ink Hunter for round 1 and pencil McVee for round 1 as well. Whilst they have both had their moments I really dont like a forwardline with both TMac and Brown and we do still scream for a crumber at the spill when Koz not there. Our clear want to move forward with short quick kicks and also our spinning of more players through the midfield are positives. Granted neither Harmes or Sparrow have really made the most of the time.7 points

Talked to a young man in the crowd who went to school with Jefferson. He told me he was always taking hangers, and compared him to Howe. Liked, Bowey, Hunter, May, Gawny, Mcvee. Good angles and spear passing with there kicks, creating overlaps and switching a few times. Oh yea, and some quick ball movement.6 points

Kayo extended highlights during the breaks are bloody annoying. Put a commercial on FFS.6 points

Echoing others thoughts but hunter making an early claim for recruit of the year.6 points

Early thoughts - Hunter looks a player. Had about 8 touches (all constructive) and a goal. - Oliver and Petracca: Business at usual. - TMac imposing early. - Gawn started in the ruck before Grundy came on about 10 minutes in. Gawn then took the final 5 or so minutes. - McVee had a couple of nice moments.6 points

His endurance is pretty good now, and will only improve, so a bit a bit depends on the level he can get his athleticism at. Playing as a mid at Casey might help him develop his running power and athleticism. He might be one of those players who take a few pre seasons to get in optimal athletic condition. This is his fifth season, and he is just shy of 50 games, which by the by is pretty impressive as his first game was at the start of 2021 - meaning he has played almost every game of the last two seasons. He's coming into his prime phase, that 50 to 120 games zone, and i reckon his combination footy smarts and good decision making is a skill set too few players have. He'll just get better from here, and I could see him elevating his game to another level. If he does he isn't going out of the best 22.6 points

Not afraid to show his emotions about the lack of support from his coach and his club, I liked his comment I will (fn) see you on queens birthday. Let’s hope we can harness his talent so that he becomes a Melbourne premiership player and how good would it be against the Pies.!!6 points

I was standing in in the shady pocket at the southern end (wind was blowing towards me). My observations were: Hunter's disposal is going to be very valuable this year - he had some fantastic F50 entries, as well as some kicks into the corridor off half back that setup shots on goal. Max's ruck work was amazing at times Him and Grundy cover a lot of ground for big guys Ball movement was lightning quick at times, with a lot of quick hands There was some rusty moments, and brain fades as is expected for the first game of the year Lever looked in great form while he was playing JVR ensures he rarely loses a marking contest Our two way running was immense, especially in the heat We looked to have a 'slow it down' mode when the Saints built momentum McVee has great acceleration, lateral movement, and composure to go with good skills The Demon Army were in great voice, standing in the sun all game - @WalkingCivilWar you must all be pretty beat! Saw Tracc and Clarry leave the facility when we left in the 6th - I didn't expect them to drive out in a RAV4 and BT-50 with a taped on front guard 😄5 points

I was there at Moorabin today and Grundy was impressive. In one particular passage of play, he unselfishly dished off a clever handball to a fellow Demon when he could have had a shot at goal, but it resulted in a string of play resulting in a goal. I thought it deserved praise so I yelled out "Onya Reg!". The crowd in my immediate vicinity found the comment amusing and there was significant communal giggling. Perhaps the nickname will stick...5 points

McVee was great looks to be another great Taylor pick up. bowey 1 on 1 was improved significantly hunter a draft steal Grundy and Gawn still combined for 3 goals let’s be honest if that’s a weekly occurrence then that will work brilliantly5 points

We saw a response. Good sign, no doubt it would have been addressed during that third quarter. No injuries positive. Mcvee looks great. Hunter going to change us. Grundy will work into it.5 points
-
Bowey big tick. His kicking was a bit off early but he's worked his way into he game beautifully. His body work in contests has been a huge standout.5 points

Lever is running out with the team so I assume we’re still doing the 2022 injury management program.5 points
-
Just getting the early rust out of the system. If we can still clean up our forward 50 entries then we'll be fine this year.5 points
-
I’m going to give benefit of the doubt and put it down to the unpredictable conditions. Our ball movement has been pretty good. We’re dominating play and are not getting a fair run from the umps. They’ve missed some howlers and given them some really soft ones that haven’t been reciprocated at the other end.5 points
-
Hunter very impressive. Priceless to have a player you trust with disposal.5 points

I remember years ago on the train going to a Queens Birthday match having to educate a Collingwood supporter who was absolutely adamant Collingwood were the oldest club in the competition! She was clueless! Mind you she initiated a conversation with me by asking why do I barrack for Melbourne and was stumped when I replied "So I don't have to barrack for Collingwood".4 points
